SUMMARY
г
EUROPE AND THE SLAVIC WORLD
A historical epoch is ending, and a new one is begin¬
ning in world politics which has not yet distinctly outlined it¬
self; it gives new challenges to the political and intellectual
capacity of mankind as a whole. This process is particularly
dynamic in Europe. So, there is a need of research with the
participation of specialists in the field of philosophy, history,
philosophical anthropology, culturology, ethnology, art stud¬
ies and others in order to discover the origins of the common
European identity and of the contribution of single cultures in
its formation and development.
It is important to note the common striving of Europe¬
ans to unity in diversity, convergence and humanism as the
highest benchmarks of progress.
All of this creates the need of a steady extending, ex¬
panding and precipitating of a revolution of the mind uphold¬
ing at the same time the revolution as a history engine. The
practical solution to this historical task is only possible
through joining forces, the energy and the will of all· those
who are victims of the contemporary irrational civilization. A
new civilization must be set up in its place: a civilization of
good sense, justice, compassion, love, tolerance and free¬
dom, a civilization of sustainable development.
A new idea is bom today for a humanistic world, for a
new world order, just society,
à
humanistic civilization ap¬
plied universally. This idea sways the minds of ever more
and more people all over the planet. Social, political, confes¬
sional, cultural, ecological, professional· and spiritual move¬
ments not only confess and preach this idea but take part in
large-scale actions to assert and accomplish it.
If Europe does not want to jet through the historical
chance of giving mankind hew Renaissance and Enlighten-

ment,
it should before long embrace all the countries com¬
prised in the notion Europe in a single family including Eura¬
sia countries confined by Ural mountains, the middle and the
lower reaches of Volga and the Caspian Sea.
EU
is an Euroatlantic alliance at present, functioning
under the strong protectorate of USA and NATO. This is and
cannot be European Europe.
The European idea proposes nowadays, finally, the
rare chance to overcome the various pan-movements
(strategies for world supremacy, pangermanism, mondialism,
panslavism, panelinism,
panislamism etc.). Only United
Europe can turn into reality the principles, the moral values
still living in the tables of European spirituality, United Europe
as a voluntary union of free, civilized and enlightened nations
that have become wiser by the dramatic historical vicissi¬
tudes of their common destiny.
The confrontation between national and international,
ethnical and national, local and global can fall away abreast
of it in the bosom of United Europe. It is that fertile soil which
will give life to values common to all mankind, to unity of
mankind.
At the same time, the European idea does not mean
to do away with the national idea, to blur a specific cultural
identity. It only suggests a new culture of national conscious¬
ness.
Europe represents a common multicultural civilization
zone irrespective of the diversity in its specific spiritual ex¬
pressions. The historically differentiated civilization matrices
have many common features here too, the most important of
which being freedom of thought, the idea of civil society
which has found its historical fulfillment in conventions in the
Slavic world, corporate culture which has proven to be differ¬
ent between the peoples of the West and East but is a com¬
mon spiritual achievement in its essence.
236
ЕВРОПА И
СЛАВЯНСКИЯТ СВЯТ
Slavism
is a European phenomenon. It has devel¬
oped precisely in Europe as a specific civilization model. It is
important to underline that Slavs are the most numerous part
of the population on the Old continent. There are
50
coun¬
tries on the European continent. More than
200
ethnical so¬
cieties live there setting up
30
nations. The establishment of
the Slavic civilization identity has taken place in a long time.
This is a historical process related to deep transfor¬
mations.
The Slavic spirituality, as a collective term, is an ex¬
pression of the combination of values that express a specific
mental attitude and a common spiritual identity of the peo¬
ples of the Slavic community. Pointing out of these truths and
underlining of their significance for the European idea may
by no means pretend for a metaphysical designation of the
Slavic peoples or of some of them.
The peoples inhabiting the Old continent, including
the Slavic peoples, should abide by their European origins
and, teaming up in the European idea, turn into a power with
growing opportunities as a stability and uniting factor. An im¬
portant condition thereof is the perception of spirituality as a
common civilization matrix. It would not only expand geog¬
raphy but raise the relative share of the Slavic spirituality
both to the West and to the East. Under this light, the Slavic
idea is no more a romantic vision facing the past but turns
into an active factor for the future.
There are a lot of obstacles to overcome on the way
to the said goal. In the first place, the spiral of disintegration
has to be overcome. „To the powers in favor of United
Europe are opposed others
-
of disintegration, of partition of
the countries underlines W.
Kraus.
The new strategic concept approved on the Lisboan
summit in November
2010
opens up considerable opportuni¬
ties of getting over the inertia of disintegration in Europe.
This is a victory of common sense over madness. It is the

beginning of a new large-scale process of uniting of the Old
continent.
Prof. Huntington
is not convincing when claiming that
basic conflicts in
XXI
с
will come from differences between
the West civilization and the not yet modern (the „rest of) the
civilizations. The inevitable conflict between civilizations may
really take place. The reason for it, however, will be not the
different degrees of modernity but the different degrees of ir-
rationalism and remoteness from the ideas of European
Renaissance and Enlightenment, the vivid embodiments of
which can be found in the Slavic civilization identity.
The globalization that we witness today is, in such a
sense, destructive, dangerous for the development of man¬
kind. It serves the interests of the giant economical, financial
and war industry oligarchies that keep in their hands the bet¬
ter part of world wealth.
Europe risks impoverishment in terms of its cultural
identity by confining itself to the geographical borders of the
western part of the continent if the dangerous consequences
of such an integration strategy are not realized in time.
There are serious risks in the isolation of Russia from
all-European processes and the constitution of the European
Union without Russia in order to build up a new Berlin Wall
between the western and the eastern part of the continent
which includes Eurasia, too.
It is also important to leave off the racial, tribal, clan,
that is, the kindred concept for the Slavic community. It used
to be the leading concept in the studies of Slavic culture and
history in the past, even until the beginning of XX
с
A so¬
ciocultural
concept, however, began gradually to spread
since the beginning of XX
с
because of the changes occur¬
ring in the demographic and ethnographic composition of all
the Slavic peoples. Cultural geography should dominate over
physical geography. Non-Slavic communities, the represen¬
tatives of which play an important role in affirming of the
238

spirituality
irt
the general conglomerate of ethnically
various masses, fall into the Slavic cultural dominion, too.
Representatives of the Slavic communities, in turn, affirm
themselves as creators of national literature of non-Slavic
peoples. This cultural exchange between Slavic and non-
Slavic peoples continue nowadays, too, and will expand
even further in the future.
The other line of development should manifest itself in
the efforts of United Europe for the establishment of an
European model of convergence between the two types of
civilizations that have set up in Europe (capitalist-individual
and socialist-collective). By combining the advantages of
both models, the characteristics of a humanistic civilization
should be outlined, the origins of which can be traced back to
the Renaissance and the Enlightenment as well as in a num¬
ber of spiritual movements that have pervaded almost the
whole of Europe and were formulated by a plead of human¬
ists and
utopists.
It would be fruitful to combine the principles of R&D
progress and of social justice established, respectively, by
western type capitalism and eastern type socialism that have
not been fulfilled. The practical realization of the idea of sus¬
tainable development makes it possible today.
