Summary
The tradition of Albanian nation is very rich and original and many
elements are
différent
from the tradition of other nations of the south-eastern
Europe. Until recently this tradition has been preserved satisfactorily in the
mountainous areas such as Shkodra Highland, Gjakova Highland and in the
mountains of the
Rugova
region where lie

villages of the Kelmendi tribe.
These areas were isolated in many aspects and Turkish regime which ruled
in the Balkans about

centuries was opposed by the freedom-loving and
patriotic population of these mountains. There were many armed conflicts
with Turkish police and army since this population protected its freedom and
the laws of tribal tradition collected in
Lekë
Dukagjini's Code which belongs
to 15th century.
Social life was regulated within the tribal organization and there were
certain leading bodies like the village elders, head of the tribe, headman
respectively bayrak which was an organization of several tribes or
geographical regions.
"The word of honor" played the key role in Albanian tradition. Due to
the lack of laws and state authority during Ottoman occupation, traditional
customary norms in the highland presented a form that replaced the lack of
laws. A big problem in tribal society posed blood feud practice respectively
many murders that occurred because of disputes between people even for
minor verbal offences. The elders, the tribe and bayrak intervened to solve
the problem respectively hostility between families and made efforts for their
reconciliation based on customary law into power. The reconciliation
resulted in material compensation that the killer's family was supposed to
make to injured family. On this occasion the family of the killed person gave
the word of honor that the achieved agreement and reconciliation will not be
broken.
The word of honor also played a special role when several tribes
agreed to fight against Turkish authorities in order not to pay high taxes, not
to hand over weapons, not to give
soliders
to Turkish army etc. Individuals
and small groups also have given the word of honor when they planned to
commit an armed attack against Turkish police or any individual or for any
other matter when it was needed the assurance that the agreement will not be
broken. But the word of honor had the most important value when it had
national dimensions
,
i.e. for the freedom and independence of fatherhood,
expel of Ottoman occupier and against occupations of neighbors which
wanted to occupy Albanian ethnic lands, supported first of all by czar
respectively pan-slavic and communist Russia. Thus, after the decision of

the Ambassadors' Conference which was held in London in
1913,
supported
by Paris Peace Conference
,
Albanians' neighbours- Orthodox Greeks-Slavs
kept under occupation about
2/3
of the territory of Albanian nation
wich in
these "democratic" countries was discriminated from the every aspect.
The Alliance of Lezha between meadieval principalities which was
achieved in
1444,
led by Skenderbey, for the protection of fatherland from
Turkish invasion is historical and it is such also National Alliance of Prizreni
(1878-1881),
led by Abdyl
Frashëri,
who fought to expel Asian occupier
respectively for the freedom and independence of Albanian ethnic lands.
There was an act of allying respectively an alliance, with the same
goal, in
Peja
in
(1897),
led by the prominent patriot Haxhi
Zeka.
This
alliance was called
'Oesa-Besë"
(The word of honour) and the
representatives of Albanian provinces who participated in this alliance had as
a part of program to fight against partition of Albanian ethnic lands since
partition was in favor of Greek and Slav neighbours. Led by traditional
word of honor, Albanians have fought more than any other nation in the
Balkans against occupiers in order to gain their right for independence.
Accoding to highlander's psychology, the faithful man who keeps the
word of honor and who behaves according to customary law is supposed to
be honored and respected by his tribe. But the one who doesn't keep the
word of honor is considered a mean man and drastical measures are taken
against him. Traditional Albanian also has some other moral features which
make him famous and thanks to which features he enjoys respect of tribe in
bayrak. All these things can be summarized with one sentence: "Such a man
is good from the every aspect and in every situation".
Many European-American intellectuals were very interested to know
about the tradition of Albanian highlanders, their life in general, habits,
customs and their psychology. Some of them even have spent a big part of
their
Ufe
doing researches on material and spiritual culture of the inhabitants
of Albanian Alps. Among the phenomena that these scholars, intellectuals
and albanologists of different fields considered interesting and important
were the word of honor and reconciliation of blood feuds, traditional
Albanian hospitality and their high character and moral.
All these international activists were convinced (they also have made it
public in their published books) that the Albanian nation, direct successor to
ancient
Blyrians,
is older and autochtonous in this part of Europe and thanks to
its honesty, faithfulness and moral in general stays higher compared with any
other nation in the Balkans. I hope that this book "The word of honor in
Albanian tradition' will prove, using concrete examples, their positive
conviction respectively the conviction of any activist who deals with scientific
problems related to Albanian studies. |
