Summary
Reckoning with the communist past of GDR has an impact on the transfor¬
mation of nationwide cultural memory, and thus indirectly on the whole Ger¬
man political culture. The author points to the paradox that the settlement with
the history of the GDR may be today, in many contexts, more important than
the history of the GDR. The second German reckoning began to overlap, in a
complicated way, the first one that concerned years between
1933-1945.
Con¬
temporary German cultural memory became and still becomes an amalgam of
both processes.
Germany, remembering the difficulties of reckoning with the period of
1933-1945,
involved great measures in the reckoning with the period of
1945-1989.
Rapid
formation of Gauck office, a model for many similar institutions in other former
Eastern bloc countries, including the Polish Institute of National Remembrance
(IPN), huge funds earmarked for research and widespread media attention, and
above all more favorable external circumstances allowed to assume that
the
second reckoning encounters fewer difficulties than the first. However, it be¬
came increasingly apparent that the matter is equally, although in a different
way, difficult and no less complex. Reckoning with the GDR past, like the trans¬
formation of East Germany, have not been such successes, as it was expected.
Germany is in many aspects a remarkable laboratory where we can observe that
memory formation is primarily a complex social and political process, in which
scientific historiography is only one of the actors. It blends many factors that
sometimes are difficult to associate directly with changes in historical conscious¬
ness. Economic processes (success or failure of reform, the state of the econo¬
my), the legal relations, migrations, and finally the general changes of intellec¬
tual climate exert their influence on what and how one thinks about the past.
Change of German memory culture cannot be viewed without a wider European
context. Forming of memory is one of the important factors of European inte¬
gration. Germany, taking into account the topography of European memory,
have a very special position. Not only because of its central location, size and
importance to the integration processes, but due to the fact that it is a main
actor in the central historical events of the twentieth century, which was the
Second World War
.
The entire European twentieth century is marked by the
tragedies that make the problem of memory something essential and the Ger¬
man memory is a matter of great importance.

Summary
The main thesis of this work is that interpretations of events of
1989
as a
peaceful revolution has provoked a profound change of the whole social memory
in Germany, which does not mean that the results of settlement with the period
1933-1945
were reinterpreted. However Peaceful Revolution is an antidote to
the older German complexes and allows the debate about normality of German
history or construction of the traditional patriotism of a European nation-state.
Such a evolution of German memory is the result of complex social processes
and also, to a large extent, the result of conscious historical policy pursued by
successive governments. The picture of these changes is not clear, because the
social memory is influenced by many different actors, each of them possessing
different narratives-stories. Only the resultant of dialogue and debate of those
narratives gives the final result, which is the replacing of master story of a
given political community. In the case of Germany this new master story is
just emerging.
The central part, entitled Narratives of GDR history describes each nar¬
rative story, interdependence and mutual influence of the German memory
of the period of
1933-1945
and
1945-1989
as the memory of the communist
past of East Germany. Very important was to include in this section, the topic
of how the German Communists sought to carry the burden, of the period
of
1933-1945
and how important for them was legitimacy in the ideology of
anti-fascism . It discuses beginnings of reckoning, during the resolution in
1989,
and the formation of its institutional and legal foundations. This settle¬
ments are analyzed as a social process, which remains in the interaction not
only with the same reckoned past, but with many other important segments of
the social and political life.
The author distinguishes eight, in his opinion, key stories-narratives present
in the social memory of modern Germany. He calls them narrative of double
past and the consensus anti-totalitarian , narrative of ostalgia , narrative of fall¬
en society , narrative of the victims of the regime , a narrative of the wall and
escapes , narrative of the West , narrative of
peaceful revolution and finally
narrative of the East German opposition .He also distinguishes one story of an¬
other nature, the story of city of Leipzig, in order to indicate that social memory
shapes at a very different level and also a local narrative, can claim the right to
shape the memory of a much wider community.
Arranging such a list of narrative stories, one must know that there are no
strictly demarcated and clear boundaries between them. Social memory is such
a complex phenomenon that dissecting from it each of the narratives must be,
inevitably, arbitrary. They usually do not have sharp contours, they overlap each
other. Sometimes they are similar to each other and sometimes antagonistic.
They are interrelated and interdependent. They do not have authors, that could
be unambiguously identified. It happens that the same person uses, consciously

or unconsciously, different narrations, depending on the circumstances and
situation. The victim of the regime may be under certain conditions ostalgik .
Someone else talking about broken society , in a different situation will defend
the importance of peaceful revolution .
The third part of the work The memory of the GDR as a subject of nation¬
wide dispute and the staging shows, which were and are major controversies
concerning the past of the GDR, and above all the manner of its commemo¬
ration, the process of institutionalization of memory, and what problems still
remain open.
In later part of the work, Totalitarian consensus, the German memory
and European dialogue of memory author evaluates the settlement of the
communist past of the GDR and transformations of the memory of Ger¬
mans in broader European context and also in the Polish-German relations.
In the end, he writes: Reflection on the past of the GDR may still play a sig¬
nificant role in Polish-German dialogue. The history of both societies, both in
wartime and in the period of
1945-1989
provides an opportunity for a number
of important comparisons and analysis.
Research on the Polish-East German relations are in their beginnings. They
are yet to be a subject of a broader study to allow for some generalizations.
Therefore, in the Polish-German dialogue, this period is almost absent in the
wider social memory. It contains in itself the potential for both negative stere¬
otypes generated in the past, as well as multiple threads, that could be a topic of
extremely interesting Polish-German debate.
The author rejects the superficial opinion, that when Poland tries strongly
to commemorate his tragically heroic past, Germany tries to forget its shame¬
ful past as soon as possible. The multitude of social memory narratives on both
sides of the Oder makes the problem of Polish-German dialogue much more
complex. Which Polish and German narratives have to communicate with each
other and how they are read on the other side, is an issue to which one should
devote much more attention than before. It provoked necessity of further stud¬
ies that may explain the difficulty in deeper layers of the Polish-German dia¬
logue associated with different social memory on the both sides. The field of
research, which the author calls the historiography of memory could be, in
his opinion, a useful tool to identify the deeper causes of ills that sometimes
plagued Polish-German relations.
