Logistics Clusters and Services
Chapter 1
A Case Study of Singapore as a Logistics Cluster.................................................1
Rahul Krishnan, SP Jain Management Centre, Singapore
Anvita Desai, SP Jain Management Centre, Singapore
Han Vu Tran Ngoc, SP Jain Management Centre, Singapore
Nazia Tarannum, SP Jain Management Centre, Singapore
Tien Phan, SP Jain Management Centre, Singapore
Industrial clusters tend to grow in locations with a suitable environment that give
them a competitive advantage over other places. Logistics clusters typically form
around ports with high efficiency. Over the years, Singapore has evolved as a lo-
gistics cluster, with the presence of the top 3PL companies who choose to operate
from here. With many countries developing their infrastructure to attract interna-
tional logistics service providers, this case study focuses on the future prospects of
Singapore as a logistics hub.
Chapter 2
Transport and Logistics in Dubai: AHigh Stakes Play........................................36
Michael Thorpe, Curtin University, Australia
Sumit Mitra, Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode, India
Over the past decade, the emirate of Dubai has emerged as a leading transport and
logistics centre serving not only the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region,
but also Russia, Europe, Asia, and the Far East. The phased development of Dubai s
transport and logistics sector over the past several decades has culminated in the
establishment of a major regional commercial hub, a so-called aerotropolis. Al-
though a work-in-progress, several challenges faced by the government, private,
and public sector enterprises are addressed in this case study.
Chapter 3
Assessing Trade Friendliness of Logistics Services in ASEAN..........................54
Sumeet Gupta, Shri Shankaracharya Institute of Technology and
Management, India
Mark Goh, The Logistics Institute-Asia Pacific, Singapore
Free trade agreements have been employed, either unilaterally or as a bloc, as an
instrument to overcome the inefficiencies in trade brought about by the prevailing
barriers and regulatory measures. During the 10th summit the leaders of ASEAN
agreed to integrate their priority sectors with a vision to developing an ASEAN eco-
nomic community whereby there would be a free flow of goods, services, investment
and a freer flow of capital, equitable economic development, and reduced poverty
and socio-economic disparities. The aim of this paper is to assess the current state
of the cross-border trade in logistics services among ASEAN. The extent of the ease
of cross-border trade is measured in terms of trade friendliness.
Section 2
Perishable and Commodity Products Supply Chains
Chapter 4
Fruitful Market Mediation: Challenges in Implementing Coopetition................80
Lincoln C Wood, Curtin University, Australia
Working in the primary sector, FruitCom is a grouping of exporters who banded
together in order to break into and develop new markets. While they aim to coop-
erate and coordinate their activities to support actions within these new markets,
the firms involved still compete in other, more established export markets. This
coopetitive relationship allows the group many benefits, relating to their ability
to source material and ensure a more consistent supply, but opens them up to chal-
lenges, such as managing of opportunistic behaviour by other members. This case
outlines the background of the firms and introduces the most recent and significant
challenges that they face. The implications of their structure are discussed, with
attention to supply, risk pooling, information sharing, and revenue and cost shar-
ing. The successes gained by the group are not without sacrifice; the challenges of
their operations are discussed, with emphasis on the most recent and perhaps most
significant challenge yet.
Chapter 5
Supply Chains of Commodity Products in India: The Case of Rice....................97
Deepti Dewani, Delhi Public School, Dhamtari, India
Shreyansh Jain, Jagadamba Paddy Processing Private Limited, India
Sumeet Gupta, Shri Shankaracharya Institute of Technology and
Management, India
Rice is one of the major commodities produced and consumed in India. India is
also home to one of the finest varieties of rice, sold in the name of Basmati. The
state of Chhattisgarh is considered the rice bowl of India as it is one of the largest
contributors to paddy production in India. This case familiarizes the readers of the
distribution system of rice, various government policies in its distribution system,
and the issues that need to be addressed in a typical distribution system of rice. The
case also urges the readers to mull over how these inefficiencies can be overcome
with the latest supply chain management techniques so as to make its distribution
efficient and cost effective.
Chapter 6
Multilayered Distribution System in India: Practice and Issues........................116
Sumeet Gupta, Shri Shankaracharya Institute of Technology
and Management, India
Tushar Agrawal, Shri Shankaracharya Group of Institutions, India
Priyanka Jain, Shri Shankaracharya Group of Institutions, India
Dolly Jaisinghani, Shri Shankaracharya Group of Institutions, India
Ritika Rathi, Shri Shankaracharya Group of Institutions, India
This chapter presents several case studies of the multilayered system in India and
shows how the prevalent distribution system preclude any means of cost reduc-
tion and making these supply chains efficient. Supply chains of perishable goods,
electronic products, FMCG products, and pharmaceutical products are discussed
in this chapter. Each of these supply chains present unique challenges and issues
that need attention.
Chapter 7
A Study of Eco-Friendly Supply Chain Management at Cement Industries of
Chhattisgarh.......................................................................................................146
Gazala Yasmin Ashraf, Disha Institute of Management and Technology, India
India has experienced one of the fastest economic growth rates in the world, which
has been a dramatic driver in the nature and scale of impact on the country s envi-
ronment and natural resources. Environmental risks and problems are widening.
The issues of managing this environment impacts are capturing public attention.
Modernization and technology up-gradation is a continuous process for any growing
industry and is equally true for the cement industry.
Section 3
Aeronautical and Automotive Supply Chains
Chapter 8
When Supply Chain Strategy Does not Match Supply Chain Capabilities:
Lessons that can be Learnt from the Supply Chain of Boeing 787...................159
Narasimha Lamha, University of Massachusetts, USA
Ehsan Elahi, University of Massachusetts, USA
During the early 2000s, the Boeing Company was experiencing a market shrink
due to a downturn in the aerospace industry after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, as well
as severe competition from its rival, Airbus. To deal with the situation and salvage
its market share, Boeing proposed the design of a new aircraft called Boeing 787
or the Dreamliner. This futuristic aircraft was received very well by the airlines.
Very soon, it became the fastest selling new airplane in the history of commercial
aviation. Nevertheless, after the initial successful launch, the company faced many
supply chain related problems, which resulted in repeated delays and huge extra
costs. These delays (now more than two and a half years) could add up to as long
as three years. In this research, the authors investigate how the mismatch between
the supply chain capabilities and the Boeing s strategy for developing this airplane
contributed to these delays and extra costs.
Chapter 9
The Internationalization Path of Wanxiang........................................................178
Qing Lu, The Logistics Institute-Asia Pacific, Singapore
Yuan Sun, Zhejiang Gongshang University, People s Republic of China
Mark Goh, The Logistics Institute-Asia Pacific, Singapore
This study examines the internationalization experience of Wanxiang, an auto
supplier in China. Once at the lower end of internationalization and controlled by
its Western partners without own brands and distribution channels, Wanxiang has
managed to climb the ladder of internationalization and taken much more shares
from supply chain profits in its co-opetition with Western partners. Two mini-cases
are presented and discussed in this climbing process. First is how to obtain more
direct market access and more appropriation of chain profits in competition against
its Western partners. The second is how to acquire more sophisticated technological
assets for value-adding and manage them wisely. Two notable lessons are identified:
(i) use diversification prudently for capital accumulation to support the capability
building, and (ii) the management of acquisitions for technology and markets by
maintaining a proper balance between autonomy and the integration of the acquired
business units.
Chapter 10
Greening the Automotive Supply Chain............................................................189
Miti Garg, The Logistics Institute -Asia Pacific, Singapore
Green Supply Chain Management(GSCM)isanupcomingfield of academic research.
It has attracted the attention of industrialists, government, and academicians alike.
In the case study, the authors examine the regulatory environment and incentives
offered by the Chinese government to encourage the manufacture and sale of green
vehicles. The challenges of modern day automotive supply chain management and
logistics as well as green technology adoption have grown manifold, a few of which
are explored for- Jiangxi Chuaxing Hau Autos Co. Ltd., one of China s growing
automobile manufacturer. The chapter also studies the implementation of green
logistics by Toyota, the world s largest automaker.
Chapter 11
A Case Study of Singapore s Automotive Supply Chain: Preliminary Analysis
and Findings.......................................................................................................200
Balan Sundarakani, University of Wollongong in Dubai, UAE
Robert De Souza, The Logistic Institute-Asia Pacific, Singapore
Mark Goh, The Logistic Institute-Asia Pacific, Singapore
In this case study, Singapore s automotive industry supply chain is studied by focus-
ing on its major trade lanes. To identify the industry s best possible supply chain
practices, challenges, opportunities, critical influencing factors across the supply
chain, and to develop the future trends, a pilot study has been conducted. Based on
the findings and recommendations of the pilot study the key variables will be modi-
fied and sent to the target experts in order to capture the behavior of the automotive
supply chain in Asia Pacific Region and the impact of Singapore s strength on it.
Section 4

Chapter 12
GIS, Grid Computing and RFID in Healthcare Information Supply Chain:
A Case for Infectious Disaster Management.....................................................256
YenmingJ. Chen, National Kaohsiung First University
of Science and Technology, Taiwan
Several healthcare disasters have occurred in the past decade, and their occurrence
has become more frequent recently due to non-stop major natural catastrophes.
The medical application requirement for a health care system includes effective,
reliable, coordinated responses to disease and injury, accurate surveillance of area
hospitals, and efficient management of clinical and research information. Based
on the application requirements, this case study describes a grid-based system in a
health information supply chain that monitors and detects national infectious events
using GIS, RFID, and grid computing technology.
Chapter 13
Petroleum Supply Chain Network Design: A Case Analysis from Oman.........269
Avninder Gill, Thompson Rivers University, Canada
This case identifies the petroleum depot locations and gas station allocations and
allows for designing an efficient distribution system. Additionally, the case study
provides an opportunity to explore the major challenges faced by the petroleum
supply chains in emerging economies. These challenges include the changed busi-
ness scenarios due to the diversification agenda of these economies, memberships in
trade organizations and bilateral agreements, emergence of additional competition,
lowering or elimination of tariffs, less protectionism of the local companies, and
other risks associated with the supply chains.
Chapter 14
Commercial Logistics vs. Military Logistics: A Conceptual Analysis..............290
Siva Kumar, The Logistics Institute -Asia Pacific, Singapore
Technical University of Munich (TUM-Asia), Germany
Aaron Chia, The Logistics Institute-Asia Pacific, Singapore
Logistics originated from the military s need to supply themselves with arms, am-
munition, and rations as they moved from their bases to a forward position. Though
logistics originated and developed from military operations, it is now widely adopted
in the area of manufacturing/production and business management. This study
analyzes how military and commercial logistics differ in the entire supply chain
management, including procurement, inventory management, warehouse location
and operation, ABC categories, material handling, network, transportation, informa-
tion flow, and technology and security management.
Chapter 15
Supply Chain Management for NGOs: Case Study of Akshaya Patra
Foundation.........................................................................................................330
Sumeet Gupta, Shri Shankaracharya Institute of Technology and
Management, India
Sanjib Pal, Shri Shankaracharya Institute of Technology and
Management, India
Saket Ranjan Praveer, Shri Shankaracharya Group of Institutions, India
The Akshaya Patra Foundation (TAPF), a not-for-profit organization, began its op-
erations in June 2000 by feeding 1500 children in 5 schools in Bangalore. This case
discusses about its operations and supply chain. The case specifically discusses about
its operations in Bhilai (Chhattisgarh State), India s Steel City, where it provides
free meals to around 31,768 children in about 156 schools around Bhilai.
Section 5
Supply Chain Losses and Risk Management
Chapter 16
Understanding Supply Chain Risk Management: An In-Depth Analysis..........349
Sumeet Gupta, Shri Shankaracharya Institute of Technology and
Management, India
Fanwen Meng, National University of Singapore, Singapore
Mark Goh, The Logistics Institute -Asia Pacific, Singapore
Robert De Souza, The Logistics Institute -Asia Pacific, Singapore
Increasing globalization of the supply chains is making them increasingly vulnerable
to various supply chain risks. Effective management of these risks is essential to
prevent minor as well as major risks that may occur in day-to-day operations of the
firm. In this chapter, an attempt is made to bring out a schema for analyzing supply
chain risks faced by the firm and develop a risk management action framework
that would serve as a guide for practitioners to identify the level at which they are
operating and the strategies they need to employ to combat or prevent supply chain
risks. The data is collected by means of an online as well as an event survey from
logistics managers of various supply chain firms. Indeed, Singaporean firms need
to properly document these supply chain risks. Moreover, there are gaps in specific
areas where Singaporean firms can improve themselves and thus become globally
effective corporations.
Chapter 17
Categorization of Losses across Supply Chains: Cases of Manufacturing
Firms..................................................................................................................373
Priyanka Singh, Jet Airways Limited, India
Faraz Syed, Shri Shankaracharya Group of Institutions, India
Geetika Sinha, ICICI Lombard, India
This case study discusses the losses specific to supply chains operating in developing
economies that are difficult to control and prevent, even with contemporary enabling
technologies such as RFID. This chapter also suggests some possible measures to
counter such losses, so as to increase the efficiency and enhance the resilience of the
supply chain. An understanding of these losses and their possible mitigation through
improved flows, reduced inventory, and reduced manpower, can better equip firms
for better supply chain risk and productivity management.
Chapter 18
An Analysis of Issues and Possible Remedies in the Adoption of RFID
in Retail Supply Chains of India........................................................................387
Sumeet Gupta, Shri Shakaracharya Institute of Technology and
Management, India
Sanjib Pal, Shri Shakaracharya Institute ofTechnology and Management, India
This case study examines issues faced by Indian retail industry in the adoption of
RFID technology as an enabler of efficient retail supply chains. An in-depth case
study of Big Bazaar (Future Group) was conducted for a period of two months for
identifying and categorizing the issues in RFID adoption.
