Summary
The origin of famous Drugets family is in France. Later in royal ser¬
vice it crossed Italy and thereof at the beginning of 14th century in
accompaniment of Charles Robert it went to
Uhry.
During his reign
Uhry
was one of the most developed European countries of Middle
Europe.
The King often had to face his enemies with the use of military.
One of his most loyal members were Philip and John Drugets , who
became founders of Hungarian branch of the Drugets . This family
started their activities in
Uhry
in
Spiš.
For their loyal services for the
king they got large properties, social status and king s favour. Their
largest influence was in nowadays Eeastern Slovakia. Apart from other
titles four of the Drugets also reached post of Hungarian
palatin
-
the
second highest post in the country. The Drugets held different im¬
portant posts in royal service such as
palatins,
royal judges, heads of
a district administration
-
e.g. in Zemlin s and Uh s
comitat.
They dis¬
tinguished themselves in many campaigns and thus influenced also
political life in the country.
In
1317,
as one of many other donations from king, they got a small
town called
Humenné.
They owned the town (in womens line) till the
beginning of 18th century. The Drugets chose
Humenné
to be their
native town from which they gave themselves mark of nobility
de
Ho-
monna, Homonnai (from
Humenné,
citizen of
Humenné).
Yet in 14th
century they owned
14
manors and
300
villages. They were involved
in political, economic, cultural and religious life in
Uhry.
They also
took credit for later settlements in most parts of Eastern Slovakia.
During their historic existence the Drugets influenced also reli¬
gious life in their manors a lot. As patrons they founded several mo¬
nasteries
(Humenné, Vranov, Trebišov,
Užhorod)
and they suppor¬
ted them in large amount. As for the small town
Humenné
and its su¬
rroundings the most important person was George III. Druget, who

founded Jesuit Collegium in
Humenné
and from this place recatoliza-
tion of
Uhry
started.
The family of Druget died on the spear
-
side by
Žigmund
II. in
1684.
His heritage inherited his daughters. By marriages the property
was devided into several families. The last owners of
Humenné
till the
middle of 20lh century were
Andrassys
noblemen.
The Drugets were one of the biggest and the most influential noble
families in
Uhry.
During more than three and a half centuries of their
life in
Uhry
they created rich historic events we are revealing step by
step.
