Abstract
The political, social and economic developments of
1989
that brought about the
final collapse of the communist system in Poland resulted from political, social and
economic events of the whole decade of
1980s.
The decade began with a great fail¬
ure of the rule by Gierek s team who had tried to introduce such a model of com¬
munist system that would somehow correspond to the modern and consumptive
Western world; those efforts ended in a total fiasco which, in consequence, led to
a deep economic slump and the emergence of a great oppositional social movement
of ethical and political character
-
Solidarity. In December
1981
in the last attempt
to save their political system and their rule, the communists imposed martial law
in Poland that dealt a staggering blow to Solidarity and to the nation s hopes of
freedom and independence, yet was unable to stop the collapse of communism in
Poland and in the whole Central and Eastern Europe. After all, the year of
1989
in
Poland was neither on the political plane, nor as regards the strength of Solidarity,
its will to fight and the nation s will to fight, the same as the year of
1980.
A communist party in Poland formed, like everywhere else, the framework and
core of the communist system. The present book is devoted to the state of that
party
-
the Polish United Workers Party (Polish acronym:
PZPR)
-
in the last year
of its existence, from the beginning of the Round Table talks (February
1989)
to
the Party s self-dissolution (January
1990).
The year of
1989
was a special period
of time
-
the time of desperate attempts to maintain the slightly reformed com¬
munist system through its opening to the so-called constructive opposition and
its incorporation into the ruling system. The attempts failed, however, and the
system entered the phase of its final decay and collapse. The chronological frame
of the process extends from the elections to the Contract
Sejm
and Senate
Quné)
to the appointment of
Tadeusz Mazowiecki
as prime minister who formed a non-
communist government, although with some communist ministers (September). It
should be remembered that it was General
Wojciech
Jaruzelski,
a leader of Polish
communists, who was elected president of Poland. The emerging new political sys¬
tem that, owing to the Solidarity camp, created a new democratic and free-market
system, was an outcome of the compromise and survived the collapse of the
PZPR.
Those processes and their developments found special expression, which is
quite understandable, within the
PZPR.
One of the characteristics of the book is
that it presents a kind of self-portrait of the Party in the period when it began to
lose its power and then started to fall apart. The Party, what was going on within

it and what its members were thinking and speaking, is presented in the book on
the basis of the Party s own documentation, in particular the documentation of the
functioning of its leadership between the conventions of delegates and plenary ses¬
sions of the Political Bureau of the Party s Central Committee. Thus constructed,
the book mirrors the Party s reality of that time in the best possible way, set in
the broad context of political, national and international developments. The book
presents discussions and controversies both within the Party s highest leadership
and among its lower ranks over the current political and socio-economic situa¬
tion of Poland, but also of the Party itself, various political actions and, finally, the
developing political and socio-economic consciousness of different groups within
the Party. Against this backdrop, the process of crisis of the
PZPR
is presented,
that after the June elections, and in particular after the formation of Mazowiecki s
government, turned into the process of decay and fall of the Party, but at the same
time brought about the emergence of new political forces which saw their place in
the new, democratic and free-market system. After its self-dissolution, the Polish
United Workers Party was succeeded by the Social Democracy of the Republic of
Poland (Polish acronym: SdRP). In order to present the situation within the
PZPR
at that time in its full breadth and depth, a wide range of source materials has been
used, spiced with substantial quotations incorporated into the logic of the book that
have been integrated with the descriptions and interpretations of the author. The
author has avoided neither generalisations and broader reflections, nor polemics.
The book is divided into eight chapters which

a chronological order of events and accompanying development of consciousness
within the Party in the analysed period. Chapter one is a comprehensive introduc¬
tion to the subject in question and presents, among other things, various interpreta¬
tions and opinions about the political developments in Poland in
1989.
