Summary
The study examines the case of the
anti-
Communist group Bayer and Co., who were
active in South Bohemia in
1950
and
1951.
The group had nine members and re¬
ceived assistance from a number of others. The case of the group throws up several
questions that cannot be answered without knowledge of the events of the time. From
todays perspective, it seems evident that the concrete actions of the single groups,
or individuals, that we are aware of today and on whom we confer the status of an¬
ti-Communist resistance, could never have had any hope of success. This is mainly
because their actions were carried out in an isolated fashion in terms of time and lo¬
cation; they lacked a unified plan or leadership, along with an assurance of broad and
significant international support. Such restrictions, or at least individual limitations,
were clear to the members of the Bayer and Co. group. For that reason, they started
out with passive and covert anti-Communist activities intended to become apparent
later
-
in the case of the outbreak of an expected military conflict between the eas¬
tern and western blocs. The group was broken up by the StB and its members were
handed long jail terms. In
1968,
all of them applied for rehabilitation, a move which
was only partly successful. Full social standing and rehabilitation
-
especially soci¬
ety-wide
-
has to this day not been attained by the members of the group. Whether
that will ever occur is an open question. For now, Czech society is split on the subject
of the anti-Communist resistance.
