The middle of the twentieth century witnessed the gradual but decisive racializing of US
rust belt cities through restructuring practices like zoning, redlining, urban renewal,
building public housing projects, and subsidizing the housing and education of mostly white
soldiers through the GI Bill. The results were that inner cities became the reserve for people
of color and the suburbs became privileged living areas for white Americans. Ghetto images in
Twentieth-Century American Literature looks at how six American writers
—
Anzia Yezierska,
Michael Gold, Hubert Selby Jr., Chester Himes, Gloria Naylor, and John Edgar Wideman
—
over a span of
70
years
(1928—1998),
have imagined the dialectic of racial confinement and
mobility that these urban changes produced.
