Summary
Military history has always been a focus of substantial interest among the general pub¬
lic, which in recent years developed into a particular interest in historic buildings and
landmarks of military function. The city of
Olomouc
(Olmütz)
with its rich history of
a large fortress can offer several of these landmarks of unique European importance.
The fortress itself was abolished and mostly torn down at the end of
19'11
century and
many parts of the fortification system gave way to ever growing city; however, some
survived. Even today it is possible to see and visit not only remnants of medieval city
walls or parts of

fortress with its bastions, redoubts and
crownworks, but also some of the forward forts that constituted the Fortress of
Olo¬
mouc
in 19th century.
The purpose of this book is not only deepening of the general knowledge about the
fortress and its history in 19th century, but also reinterpreting some inaccuracies in
current state of research and filling many of its blank spots. Presented text is based on
several years of research in both Czech and Austrian archives (primarily the
Kriegsar¬
chiv
in
Vienna).
Research in many primarily written sources enables us to see the for¬
tress of
Olomouc
through the eyes of contemporary military engineers and Austrian
military command, and to understand evolution of the fortress in military and inter¬
national context. The plans and ideas behind this evolution are confronted with actu¬
al realities of fortress-building "on the spot". Author follows many factors influencing
the process of modernization of the fortification system, as well as the building process
itself, and focuses his attention primarily on the development of the fortress itself (as
documented in existing archival sources) along with evolution of the complicated ad¬
ministrative apparatus that went along with the process.
It is not ambition of this book to be a synthesis of modern military history of
Olo¬
mouc.
Thanks to the current state of archival research and practically no existing sec¬
ondary literature on many important subjects (army units present in the city through¬
out decades; everyday life in the garrison; its influence on social and economic life of the
city and its inhabitants; cooperation between military and civilian authorities, etc.),
this would not be even remotely possible and would require substantial resources in
terms of time, finances and, most of all, research personnel. Instead, this study repre¬
sents what is possible under current state of affairs
-
it is "only" a history of one spe¬
cific level of the multifaceted net of meanings and realities we call "military history of
Olomouc
in 19th century". It is an effort to create a basis for any future history of the
fortress of
Olomouc;
a basis that will be developed (and possibly corrected) by future
research and that can beusedasa basic source for many other scholarly as well as pop¬
ular studies.
The forward forts that survived in the area of
Olomouc
are silent witnesses to painful
process of building, developing and then abolishing a large fortress. They were a part of
sophisticated military system of strategic importance, a system which played an impor¬
tant role in the defense of Austria; a system that deeply influenced (positively as well as
negatively) life of the whole region for many decades. Looking at these buildings, walls
and other objects of military history, we should always remember the wider context of
their building, purpose and use. This book should be an important contribution to our
understanding of this context.
