SUMMARY
The rich heritage of Cracow Jews includes Hebrew manuscripts, which served,
among others, in the synagogue liturgy. They were commentaries of biblical,
Tal¬
mudic
or legal texts as well as administrative documents. Although Hebrew ma¬
nuscripts are stored in the collections of The University Library, The Princes
Czartoryski Museum and The National Museum in Cracow, none of them have
been published as yet. Moreover, until today, proper research has not been con¬
ducted in order to determine where else such documents are stored (e.g., whether
they could be found in Church collections).
Memorbuch is a term for the memorial book, read in total or in part during the
ceremony of the remembrance of the deceased (Hebrew:

hazkarat
neshamot). In fact, it was the only book used in the synagogue, which used to be
handwritten even after the invention of print had been introduced. The Cracow Me¬
morbuch consists of sixteen sheets of paper with no water marks. Unfortunately,
the title page, which should include the information on the founder and the users,
has not been preserved. In the Jewish National and University Library in Jerusa¬
lem it is catalogued as the following:

(The Memorial Book of the synagogue in Cracow). However, upon
a closer examination of its content, one can determine that the book used to belong
to beth ha-midrash of Meir
Kalisher,
a Cracow day an.
The Book consists of
382
names of the deceased written in three parts. It opens
with the names of Cracow rabbis, beginning from Joseph, the son of Gershon,
who died in
1592,
and ending with Haim
Arie
Horowitz, who died in
1904
(pages
1-4).
The second part consists of the names of the men
oí
beth ha-midrash (pa¬
ges
5-15).
On page
15,
there begin the entries of the names of women who con¬
tributed financially to the beth ha-midrash, thus the subtitle. Yet, on further pages
one finds entries of the names of men. Only later, on pages
24-28,
do we find na¬
mes of women again. The Book does not include a martyrology, that is, a list of
Cracow martyrs, which used to be a typical section of a Memorbuch. All entries
are accompanied by liturgical prayers, including Mi She-Bar
ach
(a blessing of the
person called to read from the Torah), El Male Rachamim or Av Ha-Rachamim.

The dates of entries in the Memorbuch are between the years
1810-1929.
The
oldest date included relates to
Arie Leib,
the son of Yaakov, who died in
1810,
whereas the last entry is Yoseph
Cipes,
who died in
1929.
It was possible to iden¬
tify the person of the first male name amongst those of the beth ha-midrash, that
is Yechiel Low, from Berlin, who died in Cracow in
1793.
It might mean that the
Memorbuch was created soon after that date. The reason behind this supposition
is that the list of Cracow rabbis (that is, the first part) was made by the same per¬
son, namely the Book s first writer,
Moshe Arie Leib,
who died in
1776.
The name
of the second entry, that of Yicchak, the son of Mordechai, who died in
1799,
was
made by the same writer, but possibly some time later. The next entry, that of Tzvi
David, who died in
1831,
was written by a different hand.
The identification of people mentioned in the document is very difficult. Al¬
ready the name of The Beth Ha-Midrash of Mayer Dayan is doubtful since the
name Mayer is spelled differently in various documents. For instance, the ana¬
thema against the Chassidim from the year
1785
was signed by Mayer
Kalisher,
whereas in the census of the town of
Kazimierz
from the year
1790
he is signed as
Mayor Lewkowicz in one place and as Maier
Kaliski Lewkowicz
in another. The
difficulty also derives from the fact that, apart from the different names in the so¬
urces, in the Jewish documents the names were written in a particular way. The
identity of people inscribed in a Memorbuch is determined by their name and the¬
ir father s name. Only a few people s names are accompanied by surnames, nick¬
names and the dates of death.
