VISIONS OF COMMUNITY AND REALITY
SUMMARY
The study of the history of ideas Brother Slavs. Visions of commu¬
nity and reality is dedicated to the ethnic community links in the
Slavic world. The ethnic community vision created in the 19th century,
described using the expression Brother Slavs is discussed based upon
rich, often forgotten or newly published (in Polish) sources from the
literature of five Slavic nations (Polish, Croatian, Serbian, Bulgarian
and Macedonian). The materials which were studied include journa¬
lism excerpts, political documents, leaflets and literature. Their study
allowed for the disclosure of Slavic mythologisation as well as the
mechanisms used to create its history. The book is not limited solely to
the periods where the frequency of such expressions was at its peak or
when, in the face of the emergence of nation states, visions of commu¬
nity were becoming more subdued. It was extremely important to pro¬
vide a context for earlier references to Slavic ties, the return to dreams
of ethnic unity in face of the threats of the 20th century as well as to
present contemporary projects based upon the belief in the existence
of blood ties which linked Slavic nations.
Terms such as pan-Slavism, Slavic unity, Slavophile often made use
of the expression Brother Slavs which occurred in all Slavic languages.
It appeared in the context of expressions linked to the defined research
streams, thereby becoming paradigm of Slavic ethnic unity based upon
the belief in blood ties between Slavic nations. The expression was
understood to refer to ethnic unity as well as the joint interests of these
peoples. The book presents narrations regarding this community from
the perspective of a specific historical context. They demonstrate that
it was, in fact, during the 19th century, in the period of rebirth and de¬
velopment of modern nations, when the expression appeared most fre¬
quently. It was then that thinkers, writers and politicians from Slavic
nations, which where dominated by the Romanov,
Habsburg
and Otto¬
man empires used the expression to appeal to the ethnic brotherhood.
Slavs were meant to be united by religion, a similar language, a common
historical heritage as well as comparable fates and aims. In searching
for a formula for unity, there is reference to blood ties, the ideology
of the integration of the Slavic world, which is based on the conviction
of its outstanding cultural values. Such thinking, based upon Herder s
interpretation of the philosophy of history, or the later Hegel human
history as a history of the triumph of freedom, gained prophetic rank in
Slavic interpretation. At the time this lead to the mythical imagination
of ideal community which in uncertain times and the weak position of
specific nations, gained importance. The affiliation to the Slavic world
manifested in the presented literature and the use of the term Brother
Slavs illustrated the Slavic people to be a united
ecumene
of nations. In
their ethnocentricities, each of the discussed individual Slavic nations
had their own unique enemy called the Outsider . The manner in
which this enemy was seen evolved over time, leading to the stereotypi¬
cal treatment of others when each of the Slavic nations found its own
ideological enemy locked in to a stereotype.
The book refers to materials from various periods in the selected
Slavic nations histories which presented the role of Slavs in Europe.
Their importance was also to be confirmed by their general number
(population), which was submitted by their apologists and dissenters.
During the mid 19th century, the continent s Slavic population num¬
bered
80
million people,
115
million in the beginning of 20th century,
230
million in
1933
and currently
300
million.
317
The mystification of the past in a specific historical reality through
the reference to fantasies, ennoblement or even the
sacralisation
of
real or imaginary heroes lead to the sublimity of historical narratives
regarding the Slavic community and forming a uniform image. For
some time the myth of community, which included the emotional
element, blurred the boundary between that which was national and
that which was Slavic, thereby building an abstract Utopian Slavic
unity which played a compensating role. References to this became an
attempt to influence the patriotic narrative impacting the collective
consciousness (most often in the situation where Slavic nations were
deprived of their statehood or exposed to actions of outsiders). Refe¬
rences to Slavic ties using the title phrase became a way to manipu¬
late the collective consciousness, leading to it becoming established
in everyday thinking. Slavic Unity, which, in its assumption aimed to
build the idea of integration became, however, a myth used to achieve
the particular purpose of giving it the status of political legitimacy.
The independent achievement of the goal of their own independence
or martyrdom through years of occupation facilitated the search for
a common aim for all Slavic nations and it wasn t important if it re¬
ferred to a nation with several centuries of tradition or one which had
just started voicing their national independence. The image of a uni¬
fied Slavic nation which emerges from its various constituents indi¬
cates the importance of a joint ethnic vision which lead to the gradual
emancipation of individual nations or, in effect, the revelation of their
specificities, where the concern for the constitution of their own state
organs became a primary consideration, leading to the devaluation
of community ideals. And even though during the first stages of such
activities Slavic visions developed as a reaction to the moves inspired
by ethnically foreign nations, in time, when the possibility to found
their own nations appeared, there was a Slavic break-up . Under the
influence of the circumstances, the selected ethnos enemy became
the Slavic neighbour which threatened it s interests.
318
The model of unified Slavic nations was based upon blood ties
became an uneven and unsustainable one, based upon mythologized
community abstracts. The initial homogenisation of goals as well as the
growing importance of visions of their own countries transformed and
resulted in heterogeneous goals. The assumed determinant of blood
ties which was the foundation of Slavic brotherhood created a unreal
community of differentiated Slavic cultures when in fact, each of them
was subjected to different conditions and was influenced by various
experiences and varying interests. The other dimension of the image
of such a community gains popularity today whilst marginalised orga¬
nisations reaching for the traditional elements of the Slavic commu¬
nity, continue the ideology which is aimed at universal Slavic unity
in defence against external threats which are seen in globalisation.
