TESTAMENTS
OF THE INHABITANTS
OF KYIV IN THE MIDDLE 16th

The text discussed in the present Research has not been studied
by historians so far, although testaments from Kyiv, like testaments
from the territory of the Crown of Poland, offer wide research
opportunities. They can be used to study legal and economic issues,
everyday life, mentality, spirituality and attitudes to death. They
present the testators' last will against the wide social context, involving
the family, neighbours, friends, debtors and creditors. They indicate
the financial position of the testator, and sometimes even show how
money could be earned and how it was supposed to be spent (this
concerns mostly the contents of trunks and stalls).
The present research consists of the foreword and three chapters.
In the first chapter, entitled «The Acts of Last Will in Urban Society
of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth: Legal and Social Aspects»,
terminology and the rules to composing testaments are outlined, as
well as the biographies of authors and compilers of Kyiv testaments,
their attitudes to death and burial. In the second chapter, entitled
«Testators, Their Family Members, Relatives and Others», the
information about testators is provided against the backdrop of their
relations with their family members and other persons that they
mention in their wills. The third chapter, entitled «The Structure and
Contents of Testaments», deals with introductory formulae, dispo¬
sitions and other provisos of these sources, as well as their contents.
The principal elements of Kyiv testaments show little differences
from the last wills written in the Crown of Poland, since they contain
all the similar provisos: introductory and concluding formulae,
dispositions, etc. The first part of dispositions dealt with souls and
bodies. All Kyiv testators were Orthodox Christians and asked that
they be buried by various Kyiv Orthodox churches or monasteries,
leaving certain sums of money to this purpose. The second part of
dispositions dealt with property. Localities of described real estates
are provided.

The most oft-mentioned movables include clothes and fabric. The
analysis of movables owned by the elite of Kyiv burghers leads to the
conclusion that they tried to imitate the local gentry. Secondly, as is
pointed out by
Andzej Pośpiech,
movables, regardless of how
accessible they are in comparison with estates, are very clear indicators
is of social status. One of such indicators is undoubtedly the clothing.
Burgher dress was largely influenced by the costume of the gentry,
which was one of the symptoms of the extensive influence of the
gentry culture on burgher elites, both in the Crown and in the Ukraine.
Kyiv burgher tended to possess weaponry.
Kyiv testaments of the period usually contain certain archaisms
(are archaic in structure). Such elements include extensive
«arenga»
in some testaments, minute descriptions of property which include
details of some things and objects, and emotional rhetoric, whereas
last wills of burghers from the Crown are, as a rule, more formalized,
according to the newer tradition of testament-compiling.
The observation presented in the article should be treated as
preliminary, due to the limited source basis available. Testaments
from Ukraine, especially those of the gentry from the
Ruthenian
and
Volynian voivodeships, have survived in hundreds, together with the
basic archives of court records. In the case of Kyiv, however, the
situation is different, since all the city records from the period in
question were destroyed by wars and fires. Only a few extracts and
bequests recorded in other sources have been preserved. Since
testaments give us much wider opportunities of studying the history
of Ukrainian burghers that could be presented in the Book, it seems
that those few surviving texts should be published. Comparing them
to the last wills from other towns will undoubtedly contribute to the
study of the living standard of the inhabitants of the south-eastern
part of the Commonwealth.
This book is concluded with the afterword and supplemented with
the following addenda: a table of Kyiv testators,
