The Preliminary Classification of Hebraisms
in Simon Budny s Genesis
The article presents the attempt to classify the Hebraisms found in
Szymon
Budny s Genesis and continues the research cycle on Hebrew elements in Sla¬
vonic translations of Genesis. After focusing shortly on the
Szymon
Budny s time
and personality the author proceeds to detailed analyses of possible methods of
classification of Hebraisms. The author develops the ideas of professor
Moshe
Altbauer,
enriching them with the new concept of metahebraism. Alongside with
traditional level style, the article suggests applying the dichotomy of formal and
content approach to the entities under the study. The author seeks to prove that
Budny s specific translator s and editor s manner makes this research approach to
be the most suitable one. Thus the author describes two groups of Hebraisms,
formal Hebraisms and content ones, and specifies the elements of each group
according to the language levels. The classification is illustrated with examples,
some of them being the exclusive type peculiarities of Budny s translation.

Reconstruction of a Position
This article investigates the participation of Leonid Andreev, one of the
most popular Russian writers of the beginning of the 20th century, in a po¬
lemic on the «Jewish question». A social event is discussed, which unleashed
a broad public debate that was reflected both in the media of the turn of the
century and in Andreev s letters and journalistic pieces. The article recon¬
structs the writer s position in relation to the conflict that arose during the
reading of Sholem

1909).
Afterwards, the press named the con¬
flict «The Chirikov Affair» and initiated a polemic about the Russian intelli¬
gentsia s attitude toward the Jewish question.

that Andreev manifested in the Chirikov Affair was re¬
placed, two years after the Beilis trial, by a very active search for a solution of
the problem. The development of Andreev s position in the Jewish question
reflects not only personal changes but also the changes in the public climate in

A History of the Problem and Current Discussions
The article is dedicated to homoerotic passages and motifs of the Bible,
firstly from the

2
Books of Samuel which narrate about relations between
David and Jonathan. The principal purpose of the article is to consider men¬
tioned relations both in terms of the key source {Tanakh) and with the engaging
of other accounts of ancient Near East (e.g., The Epic of Gilgamesh). Further¬
more, the author of the article conducts a survey of recent researches in the
Queer Bible Studies with a glance to previous historiography.

The Holocaust Theme in Belarusian music
The article considers a number of musical works that reflect Belarusian
composers , namely, L. Abeliovich s, H. Wagner s, and E. Tyrmand s tribute to
the theme of the Holocaust. It is pointed out that such works created in Belorus-
sian Soviet Socialist Republic are few in number, despite the fact that the coun¬
try s Jewish population faced the most severe atrocities as compared to other
Soviet republics during the WWII.

A number of phonetic and graphic repetitions and correspondences are re¬
vealed in the poem Gen
49.
These repetitions and correspondences form, by
means of association, certain motifs, which, on the one hand, are typical of
biblical narrative, and, on the other, contain some additional meanings. One
of such motifs is about pseudoequality of Joseph and Judah, which further on
transforms to the advantage of Judah; another one is about Joseph s promi-

nence and at the same time isolation in the family; yet another one is about
Joseph s loose
connecton
with the eponyms of the northern tribes, which con¬
trasts with Judah s very strong connection with them.

in the whole narra¬
tive is similar, to a certain extent, to the role of the ritual itself: reproduction of
cosmogony in the image of the ideal united Israel as it brings together the

The Jewish-Christian conflict in Zverovichy:
unknown details of a famous case
The article is dedicated to the analysis of one archival document, which is
kept in Russian State Historical Archive (Saint-Petersburg). The story itself
is well-known and described on the pages of classical works on Jewish history.
But the whole archival file has become accessible not long ago. It elucidates
many aspects of Jewish-Christian relationships in the first quarter of the 18th cen¬
tury in Russian-Polish frontier, such as economic and social connections between
Jews and Christians and traditional perception of Jews in Russian consciousness.

On the issue of their origin and perception
by inhabitants of
Judea
In this article we have concentrated on two problems of army of Alexander
Jannaeus: origin of mercenaries in Hasmonean armies, and their perceptions by
inhabitants of
Judea.
In the course of research we have come to a conclusion
that Hasmoneans used mercenaries from Asia Minor, mainly from
Cilicia
and
Pisidia. However, the basic line of heavy infantry was formed at the expense of
representatives of other territories of East Mediterranean. To establish concrete
areas from which these soldiers were hired is not yet obviously possible owing
to insufficiency of sources. However, there is no doubt that among mercenaries
in Alexander Jannaeus army fought not only representatives of
Cilicia,
Pisidia
and, possibly, Thracia which was mentioned by the previous researchers of this
problem. Nevertheless there were natives of other territories of region who
were backbone of army of Alexander Jannaeus. The relation of inhabitants of
Judea
to all mercenaries on service at the Judaic governor was similar to the
relation to Alexander Jannaeus himself, as to the king of
Judea.

M. Gnesin: a Jewish composer or a Composer
of Jewish Origin ?
Mikhail Gnesin s Jewish national identity is considered in terms of the
composer s origin, his public and creative activity. Gnesin was born and
brought up in the family of educated Jews. The part he played in the activity of
the Jewish Folk Music Society, being one of his numerous activities, had never
been decisive; due to this part of his activity, later in his life Gnesin suffered
from political repressions. Gnesin s musical interest belonged to academic
sphere; he considered folk melodies from the viewpoint of European music
school. However, it was important for him at certain moments of his life to feel
himself a part of Jewish people and to correlate his own creative activity with
Jewish musical traditions.

Jerusalem Temple In Italian Art:
A Model For Eastern European Synagogues
Renaissance Italy is not just European art s lawgiver, but also a conductor
of theoretical views of the ideal city, in which an image of the Jerusalem Tem¬
ple occupies the center. These ideas developed initially in a Christian milieu,
were later adapted by Italian Jewry, and finally became widespread among
European Jewish communities.
In the early 16th-century Christian artists works

Raphael,
Perugino,
espe¬
cially the Venetian
Carpaccio
—
the Temple was associated with
octogonal
domed
structures hailing from Jerusalem s Dome of the Rock. The same model became
widespread in Jewish art, e.g., in Venice: engravings published by Giustiniani
(1550s), the Venetian Haggadah
(1609),
Jewish marital contracts (1730-50S)
especially popular later. This model also transfers into Venetian synagogue
architecture: consider the Bimah lamps execution dating from 18l -century
reconstructions of the Grand German, Canton, and Italian Scuolas.
Image connected with the Temple is also an item of purely Italian origin:
St. Peter s baldachin by Bernini in Rome
(1633),
which influenced the Bimahs
four-pillared design, the twisted columns in different Italian synagogues, and
other ritual items.
Consider, finally, the Jerusalem Temple s idealized architectural model
from Villalpando s treatise
(1604),
based on a spatialized image of the Taber¬
nacle surrounded by the Twelve Tribes of Israel in the Desert.

Jerusalem Temple were imported from Italy and blossomed in Eastern European
Ashkenazic synagogues, impacting the development of traditional shtetl art.

Early Hebrew articles by Vladimir Jabotinsky
in Warszawa s newspaper ha-Zophe
The publication is dedicated to the early period of Jabotinsky s activity in He¬
brew press. As it is known Jabotinsky was an active contributor to Russian, Rus¬
sian-Jewish and Jewish (Hebrew and Yiddish) press. Presented articles were pub¬
lished in Hebrew newspaper ha-Tzofe (An Observer) at the very beginning of his
activity. Here one can find their first translation into Russian. It is important to men¬
tion that one of the articles was Jabotinsky s first experience in writing in Hebrew.
Two articles are known only in Hebrew, one article is partly known in Russian
variant and the fourth text has manuscript that can be found in Jabotinsky Institute
in Israel. The most interesting feature of these articles is their stylistics. Like many
other bi-hngual authors Jabotinsky discussed Jewish problems in Jewish languages
press rather more brutal than in Russian language analogues. It is mostly connected
with the problems of Jewish prostitution and Jewish activity in its organization.
There is no doubt that if had published in Russian such texts could have become
sources to Russian anti-Semite propaganda. So, this publication presents a new
view on Jabotinskys activity both in Russian-Jewish context (as a literary critic of
Sermon Jushkevich), as a Zionist publicist in Hebrew (even translated by his col¬
leagues) and as a specialist in a theory of the woman question both in Russian
and Jewish contexts but now transformed into Hebrew context.

This article investigates the Jewish element in the poetic texts of the Russian
resp.
Soviet bard Vladimir Vysocky
(1938-1980),
who was himself half-Jewish
on the paternal side. The topic of Jewishness is verbalized by Vysocky mainly as
a polemic against anti-semitism and an exposure of its absurdity, as well as an
attack on the role of the Soviet state in supporting and defending this attitude.
As compared to the poetic work of
Aleksander
Galich (1920-1977),
who was
a highly (self-conscious Jew, the question of the ethnic identity of people in gen¬
eral does not play the same primordial role in Vysocky s work.
In this paper, some famous songs, such as
Antisemity ,
and Mishka Shif-
man , will be analysed alongside less well-known poems and texts (the authorship
of one of whom is only attributed to Vysocky). As will be shown in the paper, in his
early period the focus was on the exposure of
antisemitism,
whereas in the later
period the question of Jewishness is reflected in the work in a more differentiated
way and in some cases with reference to the life of the bard. In contrast to the ongo¬
ing debates on the internet about the personal involvement of the bard s life in the
Jewish community or ethnicity, this paper tries to analyse the problem on the
basis of the poetic work, without having recourse to biographical data.

About displays of anti-Semitism and shades
of the «bloody accusation» in traditionally tolerant region
Multi-ethnic Republic of Bashkortostan has always been considered almost
a model of tolerance since the time of Ufa province, where in
1859
began to
settle Jews fit in the social structure of the region. Nevertheless, the study of

archival material, narrative sources suggest that anti-Semitism as part of the
authorities province, some Soviet leaders and the population had taken place,
although, of course, not to the same extent as in other regions. Jews settled in
the center of Ufa, because inhabitants of border regions differed intolerance. In
one of these areas still remain as a negative performance compared with the
Jews, offensive nicknames. Prior to

The article is devoted to the research of artistic world of German-Jewish poe¬
tess Rose Auslaender
(1901-1988)
whose works together with the
N.
Sachs and
P. Celan s poetry has become an outstanding phenomenon of the 20th century
poetry. Rose Auslaender s lyrics is incomprehensible beyond the context of Ho¬
locaust as well as outside the context of Jewish and Christian mystics. Symbol of
Rose revealed by the poetess in her own name is the major cross-point of all Rose
Auslaender s poetry s semantic strata. Both Jewish and Christian mystical sym¬
bols get connected in this symbol (God s people, mystical Community of Israel
(Knesset Israel), Shekinah, Soul, God s Word, the Virgin Mary, and Jesus). At
the same time there is prevalence of allusions connected with Jewish mystics and
replenished by the tragedy of the Holocaust
.
That is Rose as the symbol of the
God s and the God s people s sufferings, of innocent shed blood and concurrent
fortitude, of Jewish people viability. Guided by traditional symbolics Rose Ausl¬

In the early XXth century the Jewish artists came to Paris from different re¬
gions: Lithuania, Poland, Belarus, Ukraine (both Eastern and Western parts),
Hungary, and Bulgaria. Were there any peculiarities in their works, determined
by the place of origin? Analyzing the works by Issachar Ryback and Mane-
Katz, who came to Paris from Ukraine, we can emphasize several specific top¬
ics: shtetl and its inhabitants, the pogroms, the Soviet experiment; Ukrainian
landscape. These subjects have been evoked by the historical events in Ukraine
and by the geography of memory, which is important for the work of every
artist. Ryback and Mane-Katz elaborated their individual approaches under a
typical manner of the School of Paris. It was precisely the subject that has de¬
fined to a great extent the specificity of their works.

The author makes the first attempt to investigate the history of creation and
activity of Jewish Museum in Lviv according to the sources of Central State
Historical Archives of Lviv. In the time span of the active assimilation and de-
sacralization of the public life of Jewry in the early twentieth century the Jew¬
ish Museum in Lviv became the product of the intellectual and public initia¬
tions of the Jewish intellectuals and religious figures of Eastern
Galicia.

The Diaries of Lea Goldberg
(1911-1970),
which she wrote from
1921
to
1966
in Hebrew and which are kept in the Tel-Aviv Archive, were first pub¬
lished in
2005.
The travel essays of her trip to the Soviet Union in Aug.-Sept.
1954
were published as an attachment to the Diaries . The Diaries allow one
to get a glimpse of Lea Goldberg s creative frame of mind, and of her formative
process, as a poetess and as a cultured person, knowledgeable in the worldly
literature and art, and of her being an artist herself.
On November
3, 1927,
she writes, after the lectures of Literature, which she
heard at the Kovno (presently Kaunas) University: I especially enjoy the lec¬
tures in Russian Literature. I feel bound to it as to no other literature in the
world . It should be mentioned that she already, in this period, was dreaming of
composing in Hebrew, even though she realized that her knowledge of the new
language was not sufficient to achieve what she hoped to achieve. (See entry on

at the beginning of XX century
The article analyses peculiarities language of art in the works of art of the
Jewish painters at the beginning of the XX century. It was developing on the
base of the national mentality. The principles of the interpretation of the image
of art, its semantics, features of art composition are considered to have been
national traits of the Jewish art. The author gives special attention to examina¬
tion of attitudes of painters to objects of the material world. The philosophical
concept of passing life reflects on the choice of the manner and matter of the
objects of representation.
