SUMMARY
This collected volume includes published scientific papers of the 1st International
Historical Readings dedicated to the memory of Lieutenant General Nikolai Golovin
(1875-1944) —
an outstanding scientist and an officer of the Russian General Staff
Service, a hero of World War I and a known figure of the white military emigration.
This forum was organized by historical-memorial center «Beloe
Delo»
(«White
Matter») and was held in St. Petersburg on November
27, 2010
with the assistance
of various specialists, as well as scientific and public organizations. The topic covers
a wide range of issues that were interesting for General Golovin: World War I, social
causes of the Revolution of
1917,
White movement and anti-Bolshevik opposition,
the Russian emigration in confrontation with the Soviet system. The organizers and
participants timed the readings to coincide with the 90th anniversary of the end of the
civil war in the South of Russia and evacuation of the Russian Army from the Crimea
to Turkey in November
1920.
The collected volume is provided with the name index.
A brief summary of the articles prepared for publication on the basis of the reports
presented at the 1st Golovin readings:
Kirill Alexandrov, Candidate of Historical Sciences, Senior Researcher

the revolution in Russia.
Dmitry Guzairov, Captain II rank in retirement (St. Petersburg, Russia).
The problem of the Orthodox mission and the moral and ethic state of the Baltic
Fleet s ranks on the eve of the Revolution of
¡917 —
an article written on the basis of
documents of the Russian State Naval Archives. The author examines the missionary
activity of the Russian naval clergy in the early twentieth century, and critically
evaluates its results. The mission failure affected directly the behavior of the sailors
during the revolutionary events of
1917.

the White Movement
—

and unpublished sources on the history of extreme right-wing
monarchiái
parties and
organizations in the early twentieth century. The author describes vividly the crisis of
the
monarchiái
idea on the threshold of the revolution, which was largely dictated by
the personal qualities of the last monarch. He shares General Glovin s thesis that by
1917
the old regime was so psychologically cracked in the society that origination of
any counter-revolutionary movement could not occur for the sake of restoration.
Anton Posadsky, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Associate Professor, Professor of
the History Department of the Volga Region Academy for Civil Service named after
Peter Stolypin (Saratov, Russia)
Anti-Bolshevik resistance of

evaluation
—
the author summarizes in his groundbreaking article the results of
the recent research on the peasantry history during the civil war, talks about the
factors that influenced the behavior motives of the largest social groups of the pre-

1921,
the peasants forced
the Bolsheviks to abandon the «war communism» policy, having achieved some
economic concessions, but they lost strategically, having allowed the communists to
stay in power in Russia.
