Czechs in Bosnia and Herzegovina: Anthropological Views
of the Social Life of the Czech Minority Abroad
This work discusses the Czech minority that formed in Bosnia and Herzegovina
at the time when the Czech lands and Bosnia and Herzegovina were part of the same
state, during the existence of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In
1878-1918,
after
Bosnia and Herzegovina had been occupied by the Austrian army, besides Germans,
Hungarians, Croatians, Italians and other nationalities of the Austrian confederacy also
Czech officials, policemen, soldiers, technical intelligentsia, architects, physicians,
scientists, labourers, entrepreneurs and other professions came here to find work and
fulfil themselves. After
1918,
when Bosnia and Herzegovina became a part of the
Kingdom of the Serbs, Croats and Slovenians, a number of Czechs remained here and
their offspring have lived here until this day along with migrants from later periods.
Apart of this minority with several thousand members has formed a component of the
population of the large Bosnian towns and several villages.
The description of the social life in this publication has focused mainly on the towns
where compatriot societies have formed and where written records of the activity of
these societies exist and the narratives of the direct participants can be amassed. These
are primarily the Czech minority living in Sarajevo,
Banja Luka, Prnjavor, Tuzla
and
Zenica.
The work further concentrates on the topic of the agricultural colonisation of
Bosnia and Herzegovina, which was supported by the Austrian offices in the
1
890s
and first years of the 20th century. The formation of the compact Czech enclaves is
described here especially in the settlements of
Macino Brdo
and
Nova Ves,
where
the Czech population has lived in a great concentration to this day, despite the fact
that it no longer comprises the majority of the population here. The work records
the life of the members of the minority and their gradual integration into the new
milieu, including partial
remigration
to Czechoslovakia after
1945.
The work thus
contextually deals with the social and cultural climate in Bosnia and Herzegovina
during the Austrian-Hungarian hegemony, the existence of the
internar
Yugoslav
state as well as the Communist Yugoslav Republic.
The work does not eschew even the question of the collapse of Yugoslavia and its
influence on minority life. Whereas in the period before the collapse of the Yugoslav
state the number of Czech compatriots had been decreasing and at the beginning of the
1990s
already only a small number of people claimed to be of the Czech minority and
the Czech minority in Bosnia and Herzegovina appeared almost entirely assimilated,
particularly in the course of the civil war a distinct revival of compatriot life began
in the Muslim-Croatian federation. The compatriot societies were renewed again first
in Sarajevo and subsequently in
Tuzla
and in
Zenica.
Several thousand people again
claim to be part of the Czech minority, but in every town the Czech society is renewed
on different principles. In Sarajevo, its activity is connected with a humanitarian

and the society is not exclusively ethnic. It is attended also by Muslims,
Croatians and Serbs. In
Tuzla,
it was a society based more clearly on ethnic bases,
in
Zenica
a society of compatriots organised on the land principle which associated
Czech as well as Germans who had come from the Czech lands at the time of the
existence of the Austrian state. Other than a description of the social activities in
the studied towns, a part of the work is devoted to the Czechs accounts of their
experiences of the civil war.
A few years after the establishment of the Dayton Peace, compatriot activities were
revived also in the Czech rural enclaves lying on the territory of the wartime Serbian
Republic. A revival of compatriot life occurred also in
Banja Luka,
in the largest town
of the Serbian part of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Also these compatriot activities are
described in the publication.
The work is based on a study of the archival materials as well as field research.
The author has visited the individual localities (most of them repeatedly) since
1996
and personally mapped all of the compatriot communities described. In the
publication, he confirms the fluidity and situationality of ethnic and national identity
and its changeability in connection with external conditions. He further indicates the
ambivalentness of the effect of the urban milieu in the area of minority life, when the
town acts on the one hand as an element accelerating the assimilation and integration
of ethnic minorities and on the other hand it is precisely from the urban milieu that
the stimuli for the organisation of minority life come. The author s descriptions are
an example of how differently compatriot institutions act in urban and rural milieux.
Whereas in the town the core was the middle-class bureaucratic and entrepreneurial
society led particularly by national ideals, in the rural milieu the organisation of social
life in the Czech communities was much more distinctly affected by religion.
The case of Czechs in Bosnia and Herzegovina demonstrates that minority
movements can be revived under favourable circumstances even in a seemingly
assimilated milieu, when the potential minority lives scattered and its members do
not even know each other. There however must be a utilitarian reason for that, which
may be brought for example by war or other social upheavals. In connection with this,
the case of the Czechs in Bosnia and Herzegovina indicates how problematic it is to
estimate the number of members of a national minority. If members of a minority
can declare themselves as such freely, their number changes especially in the urban
milieu according to the momentary situation, all the more so if these are people who
have lived in the given milieu for a long time and are well integrated in it, or are the
members of mixed marriages.
The work is also an example of how the composition of a national minority can
be significantly influenced by the external non-acceptance in more powerful majority
communities, hence a situation when the path to inclusion in the majority society is
denied to people of certain characteristics.
The work is rich in facts. It describes in detail the activities of the individual
societies, their membership base, interest and educational activity and their mutual
contacts. Great attention is devoted to how compatriot life has been perceived by the
individual actors, who express themselves on individual topics through discourses

from guided interviews, which are included in the text. A part of the work is also
a general introduction to the issues of migration and the formation of Czech minorities
abroad.
