Contents
1 Intimations 1
In which we discover Johnson's empathy with women, his concern
for the plight of prostitutes, his belief that women should be educated
enough to converse with their husbands, his desire to act as 'a neutral
being' between the sexes, and his influence on Mary Wollstonecraft.
2 Here's a Brave Mother 14
Sarah Johnson, aged forty, gives birth to her firstborn son Samuel;
has to cope with his sickly childhood and her melancholic husband;
runs the bookshop after Samuel leaves for London to make his name
as a writer; does not see him for twenty years, not even when he is
told that she is dying.
3 Love and Death 40
Samuel Johnson marries Elizabeth ('Tetty') Porter, a woman old
enough to be his mother, in 1735. He declares it is 'a love match on
both sides'. But she loses everything when she marries him - even
her children. She's thought of as 'a painted poppet', a woman who
drank cheap spirits and lounged around reading romantic novels, but
when she dies Johnson is devastated.
An Equal Mind 68
Elizabeth Carter comes to London to find employment as a writer,
encouraged by her scholarly father. She works alongside Johnson on
the Gentleman's Magazine, but she establishes her reputation long
before him. Her translation of the Stoic philosopher Epictetus is a
huge success. She is also renowned for the excellence of her puddings.
Miss Sainthiü and the Female Quixote 97
Not long after Tetty dies, Johnson begins writing to Hill Boothby in
search of spiritual guidance and consolation. Is she a potential second
wife? In the meantime, he nurtures the talent of the precocious
Charlotte Lennox, who arrives in London from New York and in 1747
makes her name with a poem entitled 'The Art of Coquetry'.
A Stifled Sigh 132
The newly wed Hester Thrale invites the celebrated Mr Johnson to
dinner in 1763. He enjoys her sharp, witty conversation; she values
his literary celebrity. While she gives birth to twelve children in
fourteen years, Johnson is rescued from his morbid melancholy by his
part-time life with the Thrales. He confesses his secret thoughts to
Hester; she relishes the opportunity to flex her ever-inventive mind.
'Renny Dear' 172
Frances Reynolds, like her brother, Sir Joshua, is a keen portraitist.
She paints her friends in an unorthodox, pared-down, homely style.
When she quarrels with Sir Joshua, Johnson intervenes on her behalf,
trying to reconcile the siblings. Her unpublished 'Recollections' disclose
the beady-eyed insights of an artist.
The Taming of a Female Wit 200
Hannah More arrives in London in 1774, is befriended by David
Garrick and has a huge success on the West End stage with her
tragedy Percy. She also adopts the cause of the Abolitionists,
publishing Slavery: A poem in 1788. But London life soon palls and
she retreats to Somerset to do good works.
Resolutions? 232
After Richard Samuel's acknowledgement of female achievement in
his Nine Living Muses, women begin to retreat from the public stage.
Johnson's attempt to place himself as 'a neutral being between' the
sexes is not repeated; Mary Wollstonecraft's debt to him is ignored.
Where next for the female wits?
