FOREWORD
Dobrogea region has constantly raised the attention of many scholars drawn to the
diversity and richness of this cultural space. Geographers, pedologists, archeologists,
historians, demographers, ethnologists and anthropologists have researched its geo-
morphological structure, old settlements, historical events, ancient civilization and
culture, demographic movement etc. Dobrogea, where the Danube Delta and the Black
Sea meet, is a unique place in its kind.
Dobrogea is a place with Roman and Byzantine fortresses, with churches, monasteries or
mosques, with people whose different ethnic origins and religions do not raise conflicts
and whose coexistence has generated a cultural synthesis shaped out by Byzantine,
Oriental, Balkan and European elements.
Archaeological vestiges and historical documents demonstrate that besides the
natives, successive populations have overlapped in Dobrogea particularly since
1877 -
due especially to several wars on its territory in the 18th century. That overlapping
process set the bases for the Dobrogea oikumena, with a complex and interesting
axiological model.
The book of
Steluţa Pârâu,
a well-known researcher for the thoroughness of her
researches and studies, has as starting point a serious documentation of the history of
Dobrogea and of the real situation of the different ethnic communities living in this
region. The author approaches competently passionately debated issues such as: cultural
identity, multiculturalism, ethnic co-habitation and ethnic co-existence, role of alterity,
identity-building strategy and her conclusions are extremely interesting.
Steluţa Pârâu
considers that Dobrogea, as area characterized by interethnic
habitation, should be investigated ethnologically as an
intercultural
co-habitation model
apparent both at the level of material and immaterial traditional culture.
Within such context, she explains the meaning of important concepts such as
multiculturality and multiculturalism, and the functioning of the interethnic relations and
of the ethnic co-habitation models in Dobrogea, assuming that ethnic groups have their
own cultures depending on several spiritual characteristics such as religion, archaic
mentality and an original view upon life, society and culture.

The years of research reoriented the initial directions of investigation from the
ethnographic coordinate to the ethnological and sociological ones. The theories of the
ethnic group were replaced by theories of the interethnic relation and theories of the
dominant majority by theories of dominant minority and identity building strategies.
Once we leave aside ethnocentrism and the idea of millenary, unbroken continuity
in Dobrogea, we can discuss ethnicity as a dynamic reality and we can analyse the way
ethnic groups have met their basic needs, inventing new modalities of exploiting natural
resources by specific actions. Although Nature has offered the same materials to all the
ethnic groups, they developed different techniques, particular forms of traditional social
life and their specific mentality regarding habitation, dressing or the family structure.
The solutions each ethnic group adopted according to concrete geographic
conditions have shaped in time into true action models that have contributed to the
enriching of the local ethnographic relationships. The contacts between ethnic groups
lead to interferences of their different expressive ways and moulded a unique co¬
habitation ethnic pattern on the Romanian territory.
Approaching theoretically such a pattern implies defining two essential concepts
for the understanding of the particulars of the phenomenon, i.e. ethnic co-habitation and
ethnic co-existence. The author engages into the clarification of the content of the two
terms by selecting only two main elements that she considers axial for understanding co-
ethnicity: similitude and difference. The two sides of the traditional culture
-
tangible and
intangible
-
are approached in the presentation of architecture, folk costume, calendar
customs, rites of passage, etc. Thus the author reaches a first important conclusion,
assuming that phenomena and social-ethnographic facts which are determinant to the
preservation of cultural identity have manifested strictly related to the whole social-
economic context of the province Dobrogea and to the ways each ethnic community
perceived the others. In this respect, the political and cultural leaders of this region of
differences have played and important role.
The author notices that each ethnic group in Dobrogea has been defined along
time by a dynamic process of interacting with other groups. Such a process has been
characterized by specific behaviour patterns, adaptation to the common natural
environment, adaptation to the external social environment, receptivity towards the

characteristics
of other ethnic groups, a high degree of assimilation of alien cultural
elements and mutual relationships where mutual borrowing emerged.
The performance of co-ethnicity has differently manifested along time in
Dobrogea, depending on the characteristics of the habitat, in the historical stage that is
analysed, on the social, economic and cultural evolution and not least on the way each
ethnic group perceived the habitat frame. During the first stages of colonization of
Dobrogea territory, numerous wars determined a certain isolation of the population
generating conservatism and contributing to the stable memory of native places and
customs. There were periods in the history of Dobrogea when significant differences of
the different traditional cultures were preserved in relation to religion, occupation,
customs or even food practices. As expression of the collective experience in a
multiethnic society like Dobrogea, the social and cultural memory of ethnic groups has
generated powerful identity awareness.
Gradually, the social evolution has determined a change of attitude. The
relationships have strengthened, economic interest gained ground against the ethnic one,
the circulation of people and the settling of young people into towns together with the
free access to learning have lead to changes of behaviour and peaceful coexistence
without the loss of cultural identity, which confirms

is a fact that the cultural dynamics generally evolves towards cultural contacts due to
geographic proximity, political interests or simply to certain affinities. Contacts between
cultures
-
be they closer or more distanced from each other
-
are
benefic
as long as they
enrich cultures. By deep analysis of the operational mode of acculturation in significant
segments of the ethnological life of villages in Dobrogea the author reaches the
conclusion that there is a permanent two-way flow of variable intensity manifesting in the
process of cultural contact in different historical periods.
Multiculturalism in the contemporary Dobrogea is founded on otherness, on the
respect for difference and on the harmonization of various cultural models. The recent
researches the author conducted have revealed that the tradition awareness of the ethnic
groups confronted to the contemporary globalization is going to be decisive for

preserving their cultural identities. Therefore it is important for cultural politics to shift
from a matter of individual or group choice to a public issue.
This work is a real fresco of the Dobrogea space, an ethnological synthesis in
which the author approaches competently all the significant aspects in the lives of ethnic
communities, irrespective of ethnic origin. She analyses in detail each and every
theoretical aspect by applying it to concrete groups, taking into account the spirit of co-
ethnicity along time and stressing the source of similitude and difference in point of
specific architecture, costume, customs and traditions. The explanations are filtered by
the logics of human groups existence, conferring to the study the quality of passing
beyond ethnographic description into the field of anthropological interpretation.
The style of the text is clear and elegant, enabling the reader to comprehend the
past and the perspectives of development of a multicultural territory which is quite
unique in a world characterized by vindication and violent conflicts.
