adam_text | THE INFLUENCE OF ALBANIAN ON
SERBIAN SPEECHES IN
KOSOVA
(ACCORDING TO LINGUISTIC PUBLISHED
MATERIALS)
CONCLUSIONS
The questions discussed in this study try to point
out the characteristic features of Serbian speeches in
Kosova,
generated in specific circumstances of their de¬
velopment. The pecularity of the research proceeding
here is that they are observed within the interweaving of
historic evolution, as a natural continuation of
indegene
language processes as well as in other speeches of this
language, and of the changes caused as a result of
contacts with other languages, with a particular view of
the contacts with Albanian. They were seen in the
complexity of all their subsystems in the light of factors
of influence made by the latter one. On this basis, the
following these can be offered:
1·
The Albanian influence touched two essential
elements of the phonological system in the subsystem of
phonetics of the speeches under observation: a) the
phoneme inventory and b) the elementary accent values.
238 _____________________Prof. Dr.
Murat BLAKU
As for the former, it is worth pointing out that it seems
they were intensive contacts with Albanian that stopped
this process in the period when me semivowel
Ї
( yeri )
was being vocalized. This viewpoint, not observed in
Serbo-Croatian dialectology, is supported by the facts of
developing chronology of this semivowel and of lan¬
guage geography: more intensive contacts between Alba¬
nian and Serbo-Croat were made, as a consequence of
historical events known in
XIV
century. At this time the
phonological system of the Gheg dialect had the dummy
vowel
e
very abundant and functional, as is witnessed by
the old authors. This might have influenced the language
feeling of Serbian speakers of these areas to preserve
their semivowel; the fact that this phonemic unit was
preserved only in the areas of direct contacts with
Albanian is another element that gives support to this
view point. Another circumstance that supports this
statement is preservation of this semivowel only here and
in Turkish, oriental loanword, even as accent points on
the suffixes of those elements, not forgetting the fact that
it becomes vocalized; it is not preserved, therefore, in
Serbo-Croatian speeches typical for Bosnia Muslims
either, where the Turkish influence was the strongest one.
In the phoneme inventory of Serbian speeches in
Kosova
these phonemes are found as well, which are not met in
other Serbian speeches outside of contacts with other
languages: /y/, /x/, (in materials /ii/, /s/. The students of
Serbo-Croat, perhaps because they did not know
Albanian sufficiently, are apt to see the former phoneme
brought from Turkish. It is presented as such by
Elezović
in his Dictionary. But it is not found anywhere else in the
mentioned speeches of Bosnia Muslims where one could
normály
expect it. Albanian being a meditating language

SERBE .... 239
for that phoneme to be preserved in lexical elements of
Turkish is recognized by the Serbo-Croat linguist I.
Popović.
Therefore, it has to be recognized as such due to
other objective reasons as well. The phoneme
lxi
(in
IPA
/dz/)
is found in other peripheral Serbian speeches and is
principally considered to have come from other langua¬
ges, which have it in their phonological system (the view
of P.
Ivić
etc., different form A. Belie). For the
Kosova
areas of Serbian speeches they are first external language
circumstances (intensive contacts with Albanians) that
caused its preservation, in replicas /xekr/, in certain
phonemic contexts, by pressure, though it has no support
in remote areas. The phenomenon of leveling of Serbo-
Croatian affricates
(/č/, Ići, laž/,
/Ül),
respectively their
reduction only to
lil,
lul,
is a matter discussed by various
linguists.
Ivič, Ajeti,
Bajraktarević, Agani
etc. have
discussed it in the speeches mentioned above.
Ivič
sees it
only in certain areas and he sees the Albanian influence
in the ending of
Ič/
and
/dž/
to
Ići
and
lã/.
He says that
Albanian palatals
lai
and /gj/ changed to affricates
/ç/
and /xh/ in the speech of Shkodra area under the
influence of Serbo-Croat, but he does not see this
phenomenon in other areas as well. Ajeti sees the ending
of
/ç/
and /xh/ into /q/ and /gj/ in Serbian speeches of
Kosova
too, principally as an interwined process of both
languages.
Bajraktarević
connects this phenomenon bet¬
ween these two languages to the Turkish influence, with¬
out providing any facts as least dealing with Albanian.
Agani sees the phenomenon in Albanian speeches of
Kosova
as an internal process, developed without any
influence from outside. This suggestion is supported also
by J. Gjinari and recently by I. Ajeti, too. As for the
viewpoint of
Bajraktarević,
the author of these lines finds
240 Prof. Dr.
Murat
B LAKU
it not supported convincingly. First of all, due to pure
language factors: Turkish did not have real affricates in
its phonological sytem, but the plosive palatals
/k /, /g /
(Ivić).
For
lel, lázi,
to get softened, first they had to get
replaced with
Ići,
lai
of Serbo-Croat, as an intermediate
development conditioning the process. Therefore, it se¬
ems to be more possible the view that the reason for this
phenomenon should be found elsewhere in Serbian
speeches of
Kosova:
together with Albanian phenomenon
of changing mid-palatals
lai
and /gj/ into affricates
/ç/
and /xh/, similar with Serbian speeches in every day
contacts, where the affricates
/č/
and
/dž/
were softened
to
Ići
and
IUI,
very identically with those of Albanian.
Accordingly, it is reasonable for this unification of the
sounds, in conditions of traditional bilingualism, to have
been done directly stimulated by Albanian. Further more,
the phenomena of influencing these languages just on
these consonants are known: Serbocroat influenced the
front palatals
/ç/
and /xh/ of Albanian speech of
Kraja
to
change into identical sounds with
/č/
and
/dž/
of Serbo-
Croat. On the other hand, the change from
Ici, lăz.1
into
Ići,
lai,
is not known in the Serbian speech of Presheva
-
Bujanovac where Albanians also distinguish quite well
pre-palatal affricates from palatal oclusives. The
influence of Albanian on the development of this process
in Serbian speeches in
Kosova
is principally recognized
by P.
lvic,
A. Peco,
M.
Stevanović, L. Vujović,
M.
Pav¬
lovic
etc.
The thesis for the influence of Turkish con¬
sonantal system has not been recognized recently (A.
Peco).
The Albanian influence in Serbian speeches in
Kosova
is also witnessed in the disturbance of phonogical
values of consonants III, /lj/ and /n/, /nj/ in certain
contexts, as well as in some occurrences of IP; b) Per-

version of accent values, obstruction of certain processes
of its movement within syllables, its fixig often in the
final syllable etc. are consequences of the direct influence
of Albanian. This is confirmed directly by D. Bajrakta-
rević
as the best one who knew and studied these spee¬
ches. It is indirectly recognized also by
Pavlovic
and
Stevanović.
Questions that have to do with disordering
and the influence of Albanian on accent matters are
particularly important for the chronology of relations and
contacts between these two languages in
Kosova.
Alba¬
nian disturbed or influenced the fixing of accents on
certain syllables in XIV-XVI centuries
(Bajraktarević).
2.
In the subsystem of morphology one should
consider the occurrence of the suffix -i at the patronyms
of characters in folk epic as an influence of Albanian, and
sometimes in texts of prose. No doubt the occurrence of
this in such cases does not have to do with the functions
it has in Albanian (definiteness of nouns). It is a compro¬
mise morphemic replica without real grammatical fun¬
ction, although it serves as a marker of nouns in voca¬
tive . The matter of gender of a noun (krv.m.) besides
the internal factors, deals also with the external ones
influencing tha change of gender. Its apperance in plural
as well (krvovi), this being an unusual phenomenon in
Serbo-Croat, leaves an impression of correlation with
Albanian, though this has to be taken with some reserve.
The characteristic forms of some nouns denoting over
four units of the masculine gender such as pet
sina
etc., seem as if they deal with the omission of forms
between one and four of them, that in fact appear as
relicts of the former dual, and this is seen in correlation
with Albanian, which does not show tracks of that form
242_______________________Prof. Dr.
Murat BLAKU
in plural nouns. In favor of this is the fact that in
Serbian speeches of Dukagjin Plain forms like
dva
čoveka, dva brata
are not found. Outside of Albanian
influence should not be seen the noun forms such as
kopilj, Đerman, Srb,
Turk,
čoban,
polic
either. A
significant element in the field of morphological forms,
where Albanian correlations even among the phenomena
of the so-called Balkanisms cannot be denied, is the
construction of adjective superlatives not on basis of the
comparative degree with suffix but on basis of positive
form adding the particle po:
postar, pomlad,
posaren,
posladak, pomlada, pobezobrazan, etc. Although this
phenomenon is also spread out in some other Balkan
languages, the imitation of Albanian whether as a type of
construction (based on the positive form) or by means of
the particle po (Alb. me) it cannot be doubted and pro¬
bably it has priority. However, the origin of this
phenomenon has somewhere more and somewhere less,
an overall Balkanic character. The form gu of the third
person singular of nouns of feminine gender in accusative
and dative is one among unstressed forms of personal
pronouns in these speeches that draws attention. It should
be seen as contamination of stem elements
-
of unstre¬
ssed forms of nominative of both genders: ga (m) and ju
(f) developed after the same phenomenon in Albanian
where they have been leveled out. But the process with
gu has not reached its end. Albanian has influenced also
in some Macedonian speeches (Koneski) on this morpho¬
logical segment.
3.
In the field of syntax, as it comes out of the
materials consulted, Albanian had a powerful influence.
The loss of case endings contributed to this phenomenon.
NDIKIMI
I
SHQIPES MBI TË FOLMEN
SERBE .... 243
The loss of case forms distinctions of nominal lexical-
grammatical categories, the reducing of cases into actua¬
lly only two one narrowed completely the possibility for
construction of some secondary elements of sentence
after the spirit and nature of this language. This brought
along as its direct consequence the imitation phenomenon
from other languages to this field of models, therefore
from Albanian as well. Consequently here come the
following, constructed completely or partly by this way:
a) the adjunct adverbial of conjoining (an object
with preposition); b) the adjunct of place, dynamic and
static; c) some type of time and quantity adjunct; d)
some type of directional place adjunct etc. Although
some of them may have some correlation with other
neighboring languages of the Balkans, the concrete data
of the linguistic corpus most frequently lead to Albanian
influence, where one should look for the almost regular
phenomenon of object reoccurrance in these speeches.
Here one should search the reflection of word order as
well. Albanian words and phrases are often met in the
sentence corpus. The presence of the conjunctions
se
and
qi
(që)
has been known for quite a long time. Other
conjunctions (coordinators) appear as well on the syntac¬
tic level, such as disjoints
a, ja... ja,
the copulative as...
as, the adversative
por, veç,
then the adverbial form
er
(here), the particle po, naturally not in real conjunctional
function, but to strengthen a former affirmation or appro¬
val in connected statements etc. All these perform the
syntactic functions within the sentence in a similar way
to Albanian.
244 ___________Prof. Dr.
Murat BLAKU
4.
However, aspects of the semantic fields were
observed in the chapter of lexicology, first of all of some
verbs. The phenomenon of semantic extension, though
restricted, was observed at verbs with similar meaning,
when one of them can take the meaning of the other:
doneti,
dovesti, poneti,
povesti.
The former ones, as it is
seen from the examples, include also the meaning of the
latter ones. This phenomenon finds its basis probably in
the similar phenomenon that can sometimes be observed
in Albanian speeches of
Kosova
at the verbs bie (prura,
prurë)
and sjell, when the former can be used instead of
the latter one. An apparent influence of Albanian was
noticed in the field of phraseology. The frequency of
their use in those speeches shows the interference dimen¬
sion. Loan translated idioms reflect both the semantic
model and the constructing structure. These elements in
the vocabulary field, as it is seen, are special indicators.
However, tracks, though infrequent, of Albanian influe¬
nce are observed in word formation by suffixes and in
language stylistics.
As it is seen, the Albanian influence has touched,
somewhere more and somewhere else less, all language
subsystems of these speeches. For a better picture of its
range in two dialectal types more systematic and abun¬
dant work is needed, maybe more field work. The data
used, however, in their greatest part prove that they do
not show big differences of Albanian influence as for
their belonging to different dialectal types.
