SUMMARY
The subject of the present thesis has arisen from my fascination
with Polish flute music of the twentieth-century, one of the most
interesting and turbulent periods in the history of music. This dis¬
sertation aims to introduce and elaborate on the flute works written
by Polish composers:
Paweł Kiecki
and Roman
Palester.
The study is based on the following four pieces:
-
Paweł Kiecki
s
Trío
op.
32,
and Concertino pour
fiúte
et orchestre
op. 341, as
well as
-
Roman Palester s
Serenada
[Serenade], and
Mała serenada
[Little
serenade].
Although their flute works stood out significantly against other
Polish compositions written in the first half of the twentieth century,
today they are perceived as the most important examples of the then
flute literature. In my opinion, Klecki s and Palester s flute pieces
take such a special place in the panorama of the twentieth-century
Polish flute music owing to the following features:

developing the technical possibilities offered by flute,
-
searching for new timbres, e.g. applying the frulatto technique
{Little serenade)
,
-
extending the colour scale of its sound,
-
associating the timbre of flute with poetics.
The aforementioned elements clearly distinguish these compos¬
ers musical language applied in their flute works from Polish flute
literature of the first half of the twentieth century.
These four pieces
(Tuo
op.
32,
Concertino pour
flùte et orchestre
op.
34,
Serenade and Little serenade) are characterized by high ren¬
dition and interpretation requirements, as well as a diversity and
abundance of tone colours, the composing means that Polish flute
literature had actually never seen before.
The formal analysis and the present author s own interpretation
of Klecki s flute works have brought the following conclusions:

is marked
by a clear structure suggesting the composer s predilection for neo-
classicism. Expressiveness of the piece is based on timbre and
rhythm. The sonoristics of the composition shows numerous con¬
trasting features in individual components of a musical work.

The architectonics of Concertino
pour flûte et orchestre op.
34
refers to a three-part construction. The expressive layer is light, lyri¬
cal and humorous. It is actually the first piece in Polish flute litera¬
ture that confronts performers with such high technical require¬
ments.
Having analysed Palester s flute works, the present author has
come to the following conclusions:
-
Serenade for two flutes and string orchestra constitutes a some¬
what different attitude to timbre possibilities offered by flute: lyrical
and poetic, but also humorous and expressive.

To perform Little serenade, a flutist must face high technical
demands. Tonal cohesion is achieved by means of unifying registers
of individual instruments.
In the discussed flute works by
Kiecki
and
Palester,
the change in
emotional tension and expressive character results from the change
of colour. Hence, one may conclude that it is the composers attitude
towards the timbre of flute that distinguishes them from other flute
works. It also constitutes a significant contribution to the develop¬
ment of sonoric possibilities of flute, as well as the twentieth-century
Polish flute literature.
Moreover, the pieces are marked by:

taking an innovative attitude to the instrument s tone,
-
imparting superior expressive meaning to sonoristics,
-
sensitivity to timbre sensualism,
-
high rendition and interpretation requirements that must be
met by performers,
-
showing vast possibilities of flute in building expressiveness
and expression by means of timbre, articulation and dynamics,
-
atypical
instrumentarium: Klecki s
and Palester s flute pieces
are written for non-standard instrumental sets (particularly Trio op.
32,
Little serenade
-
for flute, violin and viola, and Serenade for two
flutes and string orchestra).
The tone of flute in the discussed works flexibly renders contrast¬
ing affects, reaching subtlety that is unprecedented in Polish flute
literature.
