Although his writings have been neglected over the past several
decades,
Ragnar
Nurkse
(1907-1959)
is regarded as one of the most
important pioneers of development economics. Given the recent
failures of neoclassical economic theory in explaining the experiences
of poor and developing countries, Nurkse s popularity is once
again on the increase
-
development economists and international
organizations such as the United Nations are now returning to Nurkse
in search of answers to modern problems.
Yet in spite of this revival, Nurkse s contribution to the field of
development economics has never before been analysed at book
length.

(1907-2007):
Classical Development
Economics and its Relevance for Today sets out to address this
disregard, containing a selection of papers that offers new insight into
Nurkse s thought, as well as discussing his relevance in the twenty-
first century. The volume also celebrates the 100th anniversary of
Ragnar
Nurkse s birth.
Rainer Kattel
is Professor and Chair of Innovation Policy and
Technology Governance at Tallinn University of Technology, Estonia.
Jan A. Kregel is Senior Scholar at the Levy Economics Institute of
Bard College, the Center for Full Employment and Price Stability,
University of Missouri-Kansas City, and Professor of Development
and Finance at Tallinn University of Technology, Estonia.
Erik S. Reinert is Professor of Technology Governance and
Development Strategies at Tallinn University of Technology, Estonia,
and Chairman of The Other Canon Foundation, Norway.
