The work which is the author s commentary to the enclosed recording of
Piano Quartet in

minor op.

Zygmunt Noskowski
and Piano Quintet
in A major op.
81

Antonín Dvořák
is a reflection of the authors research,
underwent in order to understand to the full the essence of the two works
—
both in a purely musical aspect (technical and formal, emotional-expressive,
performing) and historical and cultural. Strictly connected with the aforemen¬
tioned recording, the work does not aspire to the rank of a musicological disser¬
tation having, by nature, a subjective character and being a unique
vade mecum
of both pieces with the emphasis put on an individual contribution of the
author-performer to a musical interpretation: constructing the form and shap¬
ing a musical narration. A detailed description-presentation of Noskowski s
and Dvorak s pieces (chapter no.
3
and
4)
contains, among others, the elements
of a formal analysis; it touches also upon the problem of a harmonic language,
the metro-rhythmic and
agogica!
aspects as well as
a textural
approach and tone
color. However, for the musician-practitioner the most important subjects to
elaborate on concern a purely performing aspect of shaping an emotional and
expressive side of the two pieces. Justifying the idea to include in one record¬
ing Quartet by Noskowski and Quintet by
Dvořák,
the author shows technical,
musical and stylistic convergence between the two works. Apart from the simi¬
lar time of creation of the pieces (Noskowski s Quartet was composed before
1879
and Dvorak s Quintet in
1887)
and geographic proximity (both com¬
posers came from the Middle Eastern Europe), for the author the factor that
determines their highly individualized character is the historical context of the
two nations at that time
—
both Poland and the Czech state in the

9th century
were deprived of their statehood. Therefore, as the author points out, in both
works based on universal classical and romantic patterns of piano chamber mu¬
sic (their synthetic analysis can be found in chapter no.
2)
the element which
is particularly emphasized is the national factor with numerous references to
the forms and genres of folk music. In the opening, biographical chapter of the

work (chapter no.
1)
the author stresses deep devotion of both Noskowski and
Dvořák
to the problem of propagating national culture, their building from
the foundations, activity in the cultural institutions and pedagogical work.
Another phenomenon, which is, however, treated marginally by the author is
the problem of a differentiated reception of Dvoraks and
Noskowskťs
piece.
If Quintet in A major by
Dvořák
belongs to the canon of the world s piano
chamber music, then Quartet in
D
minor by Noskowski, despite its unques¬
tionable musical value, still remains a rather unacknowledged work. The author
hopes that the presentation of the value of this work (one of the best among
Noskowski s compositions) presented together with a widely recognized mas¬
terpiece by
Dvořák
will at least in a minimal way contribute to the increase of
the interest in chamber music composed by this Polish composer.
