Jiří
Vysloužiľs
book about the world-renowned composer and conductor,
Karel Husa,
is an original volume on his life and works. It is not organized
in the traditional manner. Both elements of Husa s personality join together
synchronically and diachronically in the thirteenth chapter. The book is
based on musical sources and literature of American authors that
Karel Husa
provided to
Vysloužil
and his archives and gallery at Cornell University in
Ithaca, New York.
Karel Husa
studied music and conducting in Prague. From
1946
to
1954,
he studied with Arthur Honegger and
Nadia Boulanger
in Paris. From
1954,
he taught at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. He is the author of
a symphony, five string quartets, and several additional chamber compositions.
Husa s Concerto for Orchestra is an outstanding example of his symphonic and
orchestral concertos. Some of Husa s compositions resembled program music.
He composed Music for Prague
1968
as a protest against the Warsaw Pact s
occupation of Czechoslovakia. The vocally instrumental Apotheosis of this
Earth is a not a celebration of the world but a warning against its destruction,
an imminent threat in a nuclear age. An American
Te Deum
is a vision of the
earth in the eyes of a European emigrant taking into account his experiences.
Karel Husa
currently lives in North Carolina.
