Summary
The Ukrainians:
People and Their Land
(Stages of Formation)
Studying the problem of the modern Ukrainians identity formation
on the particular territory of Eastern Europe remains to be a topic for
investigation around which there are both scientifically substantiated
conclusions and numerous fictions. It is worth reminding that the par¬
ticular ethnos representatives awareness of their group unity, which is
called ethnic self-determination, has its external expression
-
the name
of the ethnic group chosen by its members. In our case it is the name of
the modern Ukrainian people.
Autochthons were the Slavs living in the south of Eastern Europe,
who are considered to be ancestors of the modern Ukrainians. They seg¬
regated into independent groups of tribes as early as in the early Mid¬
dle Ages and were mentioned in numerous sources (first and foremost
Byzantine ones) under the name of the Antes or Antae, the Sclaveni, and
the old name of the Wend. The name of the first group in this list, when
translated from the Iranian language, means outermost . Given this, later
on the land was given a corresponding name

In the late first millennium AD this territory was inhabited by the
tribes mentioned in the annalistic sources
-
the
Polanš,
the
Drevlians,
the Severians, the Tivertsi, the Vomynians, the Croats, the Ulichs (Ug-
lichs), which further amalgamated (early in the second millennium)
into the first ever eastern Slavic state called Rus TRussian land , with
the people called
Rus3
people (the Ruthenians). It also should be
pointed out that such a name was perceived as native in this region for
quite a long period, even after the collapse of Kievan
Rus
at the times
of Mongol Tatar invasion.
Later on, at post-Mongol and Cossack times, apart from the
Rus
people (the Ruthenians) a lot of other names were used
-
the Maloros
(the one who lives in Minor
Rus),
the Cherkassians , the Cossack
-
Rus¬
sian (or the Cossack
-
Ukrainian) people and others. In the late Middle
Ages and in the early Modern times the left bank area of the Dnieper riv-

er was
more often called Malorossiya (Minor Russia) , while the right
bank area of the Dnieper was called Ukraine , Though the cases of con¬
fusion of names in relation to the territory were not rare, they sometimes
also shifted in space. The territories of the modern Western Ukraine,
which at that time belonged to the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth
were perceived as Russian. For some time Zaporozhye was considered as
a separate, independently managed territory, while

Cossacks
(keeping in mind their relation to the eastern Slavic ethnic groups)
-
stayed separate from Ukraine, which was their motherland.
A significant change in terms of self-perception came about in the
XIXth century, when the progressive Ukrainian intellectuals started re¬
ferring to the land in their scientific papers using both the old names
of the land and the people and the new ones. However in their
publi¬
cistic
works they were inclined to the Ukrainian variant. The activity
of
Taras
Shevchenko made a crucial role in final transition to the names
Ukraine and Ukrainians , which were further used in political and
academic literature, and also in everyday life by the overwhelming ma¬
jority of Autochthons.
Now we can confidently state that representatives of the local Slavic
substratum passed a long and sophisticated way through the centuries in
their ethnic development over a certain area, which resulted in the final
formation of the people s identity. This process took one and a half mil¬
lennium and ended in the XIXth century.
The next historic phase
-
the XXth and the beginning of the XXIst
century
-
became the time of formation of the modern nation. This pe¬
riod was marked by a range of uneasy processes of further development
of the Ukrainian nation.
