LIVING AMONGST THE POMAKS IN WESTERN THRACE

This book is a journey amongst the pomaks living in the Southern
Rhodope Mountains in Western Thrace. It is a trip round the furthermost
North-Eastern part of Greece which is, in fact, quite different from the
popular tourist itineraries around the places where the Bulgarian tourists
do not need an interpreter because the local Muslims speak an archaic
Bulgarian dialect. The book delineates the geography of the Bulgarian
vernacular that is spoken by the Greek pomaks in the regions of Xanthi,
Rhodope and Evros. It is based upon some meetings and interviews that
were conducted by Tanya Mangalakova, a Bulgarian journalist, in West¬
ern Thrace in the period
2010-2011.
The book shows how the people living in the Rhodope Mountains
on both sides of the border between Bulgaria and Greece have been redis¬
covering one another after the Cold War period. It also displays the hope
of the people living in the Bulgarian part of the Rhodope Mountains that
the country is going to accede to the
Schengen
area.
The photographs were collected under a project entitled The Cul¬
tural, Historical and Language Heritage of Neighboring Bulgaria , an in¬
terdisciplinary study that was conducted by the St.
Kliment
of
Ohrid
University in Sofia of the ethnic Bulgarians that live outside the contem¬
porary borders of the country.
Tanya Mangalakova is a Bulgarian journalist and the author of a couple
of books: Our Fellow Countrymen in Kosovo and Albania , a documentary
book on the
Gorani
people
