On the trail of a macrosociological view of history and the present
Jaroslav
Krejčí
(born 13th February
1916
in
Polešovice
near
Uherské
Hradiště)
is an internationally famous specialist in the comparative history
of civilizations. The only son of lawyer and politician
Jaroslav Krejčí
(1892-
-1956),
professor of Constitutional Law at
Masaryk
University in Brno,
Minister of Justice
1939-45
and Prime Minister of the Protectorate govern¬
ment
1942-45,
he studied law at Charles University in Prague and he was
interested in national economic issues from his time as a student. Under
the German occupation he worked at the Central Association of Com¬
merce and played an active role in the domestic anti-Nazi resistance.
During the postwar years he worked at the State Planning Office while
lecturing in macroeconomics at the College of Political and Social Studies
and the Business College in Prague; until February
1948
he was a national
economic expert and member of the Czechoslovak Social Democrats.
From
1954
to
1960
he was imprisoned on political grounds and sub¬
sequently persecuted both professionally and personally. During the
1960s
he took part in a systematic study of the history of civilization, inspired by
the work of A. J.
Toynbee,
and in an extensive manuscript (with
1600
typewritten pages) he expounded his ideas on the foundations and
development of Asian civilization. In August
1968
he went into exile and
after a stay of several months in Vienna he settled in
1969
at Lancaster
University, where he was appointed professor in
1976.
Here he developed
his macrosociological interpretation of historical processes and with his
method of integrated social sciences (a combination of sociology, eco¬
nomics, history,
politology
and cultural anthropology) he dealt inter alia
with the social development of postwar Czechoslovakia and Germany, the
national question in Europe, the morphology of revolutionary processes,
the issue of non-European civilizations and comparative religion. From
1990
he also lectured for almost two decades at Czech universities; in
1994
he established the Centre for Research into
Socio-Cultural
Pluralism at the
ASCR Institute of Philosophy and he was elected a foreign member of the
Learned Society of the Czech Republic. He has published a number of

he established the Anna and
Jaroslav Krejčí
Research Endowment Fund to support the research,
publication and pedagogical activities involved in the field of integrated
social sciences.
The publication, which was brought out to mark an important an¬
niversary in the life of
Jaroslav Krejčí,
presents a selection from his work,
documenting over half a century of scholarly efforts in the field of the
macrosociologically conceived comparative history of civilizations. The
specific texts, some previously unpublished and some included in collec¬
tive anthologies, show how he progressively revealed the issue involved,
how he struggled with it both methodologically and terminologically and
how his literary style developed.
The first text
Cesty indických civilizací

is an extract from an extensive
manuscript on the history of World civilizations and cultures, which was
progressively written in Prague during the
1960s
and which ultimately
went into exile with its author, where it formed the basis for his published
English work on comparative civilization studies. The second text

health reasons) on 24th January
