GRGA ČEVAPOVIĆ
A DENIER OF THE EARLY LIBERALISM
Grga Čevapović
(1786-1830)
was a member of the Franciscan Provincial Community
St John Kapistranski, which, at the beginning of the 19th century, had the most monaster¬
ies in
Slavonia
and the Croatian part of
Srijem,
while the smaller number of them were
in the Hungarian part of the Danube region; the majority of province members were
Croats. He left his trace in the Croatian literature in his literary, historical and philologi¬
cal works, which had been confirmed by the participants of the scientific conference on
his works in
Slavonska Požega
on May 20th and 21st
1987.
What is more, the participants
made efforts to point out that his literary and general cultural activities, at the time im¬
mediately before the Illyrian Movement (in Croatia), were more valuable than they are
estimated by the historians of the Croatian literature. They explained the importance of
his activities and justified their common demand that the historians of the Croatian lit¬
erature should change their opinions concerning
Čevapović
and find his position in that
he deserves. The works of the participants of the scientific conference had been published
in the collective papers of the Croatian Academy of Arts and Science, at the time
JAZU,
under the title Scientific Conference on Father
Grgur Čevapović
with an Exibition of his
Works and Manuscripts
(Osijek,
1990).
In such a way are not only preserved reports of
the participants of the conference, the collective papers of works so became an important
document of today s knowledge of the multi-layered and different literary and universally
cultural

activities. Who is to write about the history of the Croatian litera¬
ture on literary creativities between the Classicism and the Illyrian Movement, or who
wants to research
Čevapović s
life and work, he must acknowledge the work
ofthat
scien¬
tific conference, as the collected papers from the conference present everything that had
been known about
Grga Čevapović
as a writer and a cultural worker.
Yet, after the mentioned scientific conference, there remained much that had to be
called unknown about
Grga Čevapović.
Some of the participants of the conference re¬
ported on
Čevapović s
church activities, but did not comprise it in all dimensions; they
only parenthetically mentioned that the time of his life and activities were in the civil and
church history of the
Habsburg
Monarchy during the period of the late Josephinism, in
which appeared and developed early liberalism. As a Franciscan of highly personal edu¬
cation, and a great respect toward the inherited Franciscan history and culture, and espe¬
cially as a monkish administrator,
Čevapović
at the historical time had a burden of great

responsibility, which for him had a permanent stimulus not only for denying the Jose-
phinism imposed inhibition toward Franciscans, but also for liberating from its bonds.
It is quite unquestionable and unjustified the statement of the scientific conference on
Čevapović
that he was an Illyrian from
Slavonia
in his literary, philological and histori¬
cal works, who deserved to be more respected in the history of the Croatian literature. At
the same time, he had an idea to renew the Franciscan life and return through centuries
developed credible Franciscan personalities of the Slavonian and Danube region Fran¬
ciscans. He was aware that Josephinism provoked the fall of the so-called monkish disci¬
pline in his provincial community, and did not hope it to be recovered only by enumer¬
ating moral cries; he was searching for an exit from the system of the late Josephinism,
which the state imposed on Franciscans, transforming them into a second rate pastoral
clergy, who depended on bishops and the state. He demanded the Church and the state
to put outside Josephinistic decrees, which abolished Franciscans their exempted status
from the authority of bishops guaranteed by the church law, and their right to build their
own Franciscan identities, but the state was persistent in its Josephinistic standpoints.
Some bishops were not ready to give up Josephinism, as they did not recognize a child
of Josephinism in the early liberalism.
Čevapović
was among those who penetrated the
real situation in the Church and society; he did not approve it, nor did he consider it
non
replacable. Therefore he directed his activities toward propagating authentic Franciscan
values, and that was a reason for his historical researchings and writings, and especially
origin of his legal documents. What is more, his complete literary activities could hardly
be understandable if there had not been his wish to restore Franciscan community, as he
knew that correct understanding of the social and church situation of the time forced
him to pass through a lot of small doors to reach his great aim, and that is a complete res¬
toration of Franciscan identities of the Slavonian and the Danube region Franciscans.
Consequently,
Čevapović s
views of a cultural worker and a Franciscan administrator
are not mutually exclusive or opposed to each other; their relation is to enrich one anoth¬
er. Namely,
Čevapović
was convinced that he would take the position of the provincial of
the St Ivan Kapistranski Province after two provincials leave their duty being in charge in
the second decade of the 19th century. Therefore, he was preparing for the service think¬
ing what he had to do and what he was allowed to do in restoring Franciscan commu¬
nity in spite of the late Josephinism. He was quite aware the he would not be allowed to
do what his predecessors were allowed, and who sincerely tended to restore Franciscan
community, but who disregarded the fact that they lived in the society that was built up
on principles of the late Josephinism, which did not allow Franciscan life to be restored
according to the principles of pre-Josephinistic model. The late Josephinism was a kind
of a rigid social system, completely
non
sensitive to moralistic cries of Franciscan admin¬
istrators. It was necessary to change the relation between the Church and the state, as it
was the time when the state established the supervision on the Church, and the way out
of it was possible only in combination of social and church changes.
Čevapović
was aware
of deviation from Franciscan way of life in the Province, and after being elected provin¬
cial he informed all of its members indicating his programme for rebuilding authentic
Franciscan way of life. After the national Hungarian church synod in
Požun
in
1822,
it
was more possible to have ways for Franciscan restoration.
Čevapović
participated in the

session
of the Synod, where he saw that a number of Hungarian bishops wanted to free
themselves from the late Josephinism, so he himself declared his views and denied Jose-
phinistic church system. The Synod did not accept his views, and the Emperor did not
approve its conclusions, but
Cevapović
was sure which of his views could be realized in
the programme of Franciscan restoration, and thought of the way how to do it.
Although at the Hungarian national Synod some Croatian bishops participated, the
fact is not known in the Croatian church history. It is quite understandable that
Čapović s
denial of the late Josephinism at the Synod is not known. Therefore, it is understand¬
able to point out to
Čatipović s
complete activities, which discover that he was a cultural
worker of a wide range, who was directed toward the Illyrian Movement, but it is also
necessary to explain that he was a reasonable denier of the late Josephinism, so he was
engagely looking for the ways to restore Franciscan community, i.e. building up Francis¬
can identities in the historical period when it could be hardly realized. Hence, it is neces¬
sary to respect his literary and cultural activities. He considered it a continuation of the
activities of a great number of his predecessors, who were at the same time prominent
members of the Franciscan order. In the same manner it is necessary to get acquainted
with his intention to return Slavonian and Danube region Franciscans to their authentic
Franciscan life to be in complete harmony with their Franciscan identity. Those are two
essential dimensions of
Čevapović s
work and life. Croatian cultural history will further¬
more be interested in
Čevapović s
cultural activities, but at the same time the church and Franciscan his¬
tory should not disregard his denial of the late Josephinism and the early liberalism.
Those are two standpoints from which we have to look at
Čevapović s
life and work. They
do not exclude each other, but, on the contrary, they enable to penetrate into com-plete
Čevapović s
activities, as his cultural and ideological engagements mutually inspire each
other and maintain. It is quite clear that in such a way we can be acquainted with his life,
his personality and his activities.
This book is a try to discover a complete picture of
Cevapović.
