SUMMARY
On
10
December
I860,
at the Croatian Vice-
Roy's conference,
Josip Juraj
Strossmayer,
bishop
of Bosnia and
Srijem,
residing in
Đakovo,
made
-
under the motto: Through education to freedom
-
the first step toward founding the Academy. He
presented
Josip Šokčević,
the ban (Vice-Roy of
Croatia), with a 50,000-florin endowment for this
purpose.
The founding of the Academy was officially
initiated by the Parliament on
29
April
1861,
whilst
the official confirmation was received on
4
March
1866.
With his historic thought that Athens was but
a minor town, and ancient Greece but small in ter¬
ritory; yet Athens and ancient Greece were cele¬
brated worldwide for their intellectual and moral
forces, and their glory will never fade
(.)
Ancient
Rome had perished ages ago, yet the glory of an¬
cient Rome has not ceased;
Strossmayer
reminded
the members of the Parliament that an academy of
sciences presupposes a university (meeting point)
of young people, who would for a more demand¬
ing spiritual activity be enabled and prepared. On
11
March
1869,
the Croatian Parliament stipulated
this by the legal provision on the founding of the
university in the capital city of Zagreb; whilst the
learned bishop and the great patron of the Croatian
people donated
50,000
florin, a sum equal to the
one donated for the founding of the Academy, and
thereby initiated public fund raising for the purpose
of founding the first modern Croatian university.
In the period between
2001
and
2010, 335
scientific congresses, symposia and round tables;
267
lectures;
172
book and film presentations and
press conferences; and
312
exhibitions were held
either in organisation or co-organisation, or under
the patronage of the Croatian Academy; in the same
period, the Academy received visits from approxi¬
mately
40
foreign delegations.
The international co-operation of the Croa¬
tian Academy of Sciences and Arts is realised at
two levels: on the one hand, through the bilateral
co-operation, i.e. concluding agreements on scien¬
tific co-operation with other academies; and on the
other, through the multilateral co-operation, i.e. the
participation and engagement of the representatives
of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts in
international scientific organisations.
The Croatian Academy has so far concluded
25
agreements and one letter of intent with rele¬
vant related institutions in Europe and the world.
In the period between
2001
and
2010,
agreements
on scientific co-operation with the following
academies were signed: the Albanian Academy
of Science
(2002);
the Chinese Academy of Engi¬
neering
(2002);
the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy
of Sciences and Humanities
(2002);
the Chinese
Academy of Social Sciences
(2004);
the Swedish
Royal Academy of Letters, History and Antiqui¬
ties
(2004);
the Academy of Sciences of the Is¬
lamic Republic of Iran
(2005);
the British Academy
(2005)
(renewed version); the Shanghai Academy
of Social Sciences
(2007);
the Royal Flemish Aca¬
demy for Science and the Arts
(2007);
the National
Academy of Arts of Ukraine
(2010);
and the Roma¬
nian Academy
(2010);
moreover, the letter of intent
319
was signed between the Croatian Academy and the
National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of
Korea
(2010).
In the same period, protocols accompanying
the agreements on scientific co-operation were
signed with: the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences,
the British Academy, the Russian Academy of Sci¬
ences, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the
Polish Academy of Sciences, the Chinese Aca¬
demy of Engineering, the Macedonian Academy
of Sciences and Arts, the Academy of Sciences and
Arts of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Austrian Aca¬
demy of Science, the National Academy of Arts of
Ukraine, and the Romanian Academy.
As the exchange of scientists represents the
basis for the inter-academy co-operation, it requires
mentioning that during the last decade,
297
study
visits of foreign scientists to the Croatian Aca¬
demy of Sciences and Arts and
268
study visits
of Croatian scientists abroad were realised within
the framework of the aforementioned agreements
and protocols.
In conformity with the Declaration on Sci¬
ence and the Use of Scientific Knowledge of the
World Conference on Science (Budapest,
1999)
sent to all UNESCO members, on
17
December
2002,
the Presidency of the Croatian Academy of
Sciences and Arts adopted the text of the declara¬
tion on knowledge entitled
Hrvatska temeljena na
znanju i primjeni znanja (Engl. Croatia
based on
knowledge and the application of knowledge). The
declaration was published in
2004
under the same
title. In it, it is particularly pointed out that by the
means of knowledge, Croatia needs to enhance its
technological development; upgrade the quality of
teaching by developing appropriate curricula; in¬
troduce the application of world evaluation criteria;
focus on the application of knowledge and direct
efforts toward the introduction and reinforcement
of the rule of law, which is a prerequisite for the
existence of any developed society.
In the context of Croatia's forthcoming joining
the European Union, two rather important booklets,
composed and published in
2004
by the Academy
Department of Philological Sciences, should be
mentioned here:
Hrvatski jezični
standard (Engl.
Croatian linguistic standard) by R.
Katičić
and
Iza¬
zovi globalizacije i hrvatski jezični
standard (Engl.
Globalisation challenges and the Croatian linguistic
standard) by
A. Kovačec.
Even more important in
the European context is the Academy publication
(2008)
on the Croatian language in five languages
(Croatian, English, French, German and Russian)
and two scriptures (the Latin and the Cyrillic).
In the period
2001-2010,
the Croatian Aca¬
demy intensified its participation in the work of
international scientific organisations. This first
and foremost relates to the activities of the Euro¬
pean Science Foundation (member since
2003);
the
ALLEA
(All European Academies), where the
activity was particularly intensified during the last
two years; as well as the IAP (Inter-Academy Panel)
and the IAMP (Inter-Academy Medical Panel),
where the representatives of the Croatian Aca¬
demy actively participate in the assembly and the
meetings organised by both the IAP and the IAMP.
Further, the participation is slightly less intensive in
the Mediterranean Academic Union, which was es¬
tablished in
2008;
the IUA (International Union of
Academies), the CEEN (Central Eastern European
Network); and the ICSU (International Council for
Science), of which the Academy was a member
until the end of
2009.
The Croatian Academy of
Sciences and Arts has co-ordinated the European
programme HERA (Humanities in the European
Research Area) for the Republic of Croatia since
2007.
One of the most important publishing projects
in the last two decades is beyond any doubt the
monumental Academy project entitled
Hrvatska i
Europa: kultura, znanost i umjetnost
-
Croatia and
Europe,
Culture, Arts and
Sciences.
This project,
which was launched in
1992,
will this year be en¬
tirely realised in its Croatian version.
Jacques
le Goff,
one of the world's most fa¬
mous living mediaevalists, in the foreword to Vol¬
ume I of the French edition
oí
Croatia and Europe,
points out
-
inter alia
-
the following:
(.)
In these
pages the authors, all Croats, demonstrate in an
erudite, intelligent and brilliant way, that Croa-
320
tia
is both a culturally distinct and yet profoundly
Western European component of the rich ensemble
which constitutes Europe
(.). (.)
diversity is in
the first place dictated by geography, located as
she is in the immediate zone of contact between
the East and the West, between Northern Europe
and the lands of the Mediterranean.
(.)
Croatia
brought together the heritage of the Roman Em¬
pire
(.). (.)
she has absorbed
(.)
contributions
from her Carolingian, Byzantine, Venetian and
South Italian,
Pannonian
and, above all, Hunga¬
rian neighbours.
(.)
Pope Paul VI was able to say
that she belongs to the "territories of encounters
and dialogue" (Engl. text cited from Volume One,
p.
VII, Engl.
ed.).
Ivan Supek, a worldwide acknowledged physi¬
cist and the first president of the revived Croatian
Academy of Sciences and Arts, reminds us of the
integration of two cultures
-
the universal (Latin)
and the authentic Croatian, and of our contribution
to the European culture, arts and sciences: While
Galileo, Descartes and Huygens reduced all phe¬
nomena to the collision or meeting of particles of
matter, a significant number of Croatian human¬
ists, especially Grisogono,
Petrišević
(Patricius),
de D
ominis
and
Boskovic,
hinted at the principle
of force as the true architect of the universe, the
first three thus anticipating Newton and the fourth
anticipating quantum theory (Engl. text cited from
Volume One, p.
6,
Engl.
ed.).
So far, four volumes have been published in
the Croatian language:
Rano doba hrvatske kulture
(Volume I,
1997) -
Croatia in the Early Middle
Ages: A Cultural Survey (Volume One in English,
1999);
Srednji vijek i renesansa
(Volume II,
2000)
-
Croatia in the Late Middle Ages and the Renais¬
sance: A Cultural Survey (Volume Two in English,
2008);
Barok i prosvjetiteljstvo (Engl.
Baroque
and Enlightenment) (Volume III,
2003);
Moderna
hrvatska kultura (Engl.
Modern Croatian culture)
(Volume IV,
2009);
whilst the final, fifth volume,
entitled
Suvremena hrvatska kultura (Engl.
Con¬
temporary Croatian culture), will
-
in a special way
-
mark the important jubilee of the highest scientific
and artistic institution in the Republic of Croatia.
In addition to the Croatian edition, two vol¬
umes have so far been published in French:
Cro¬
atie. Trésors de la Croatie ancienne (Volume
I,
1999);
and Croatie. Trésors du Moyen Âge et de
la Renaissance (Volume
II,
2005),
and further two
in English: Croatia in the Early Middle Ages: A
Cultural Survey (Volume One,
1999);
and Croatia
in the Late Middle Ages and the Renaissance: A
Cultural Survey (Volume Two,
2008).
In
2011,
the
year of the celebration, the publication of the third
volume in both French and English is planned.
On the occasion marking the 150th anniversary
of the Academy, the deluxe edition of the so-called
Strossmayer
Hours will be published; this is a rare
and
-
within the framework of the Croatian art
heritage
-
an exceptionally valuable and a well pre¬
served work of the 15th-century book illumination.
Bishop
Strossmayer
had owned this manuscript
pearl since
1877,
when it was purchased in Rome
by canon Nikola
Voršak
from
Đakovo,
the Bishop's
faithful correspondent and one of the most impor¬
tant mediators for the acquisition of the works of
art for the Bishop's collection.
Josip Juraj
Strossmayer
had donated the
Strossmayer
Hours to the Gallery at its festive
opening on
9
November
1884.
On that occasion,
in his inaugural speech, he mentioned all the most
distinguished works of art and art schools, particu¬
larly pointing out the
Strossmayer
Hours by show¬
ing it to the guests and naming it "the pearl in the
collection".
The
Strossmayer
Hours is characterised by the
abundance of miniatures,
bordures
and gold. This
illuminated manuscript was ordered and created
in Paris in the last decade of the 15th century. The
majority of illuminations in the
Strossmayer
Hours
were entrusted to the Master of Jacques
de Be¬
sançon,
an outstandingly productive artist, whose
school had dominated the Parisian book illumina¬
tion scene in the last two decades of the
1
5th cen¬
tury. The illuminations in the calendar section may,
on the other hand, be described as being similar to
the hand of the Master of Charles the Eight, named
after the Royal Book of Hours, which in form imi¬
tates the structure of the printed one.
321
The Strossmayer
Hours was published with the
aim of drawing the attention of both the Croatian
and the international professional public to this
work of art, hoping for it to become more present
in the minds of the people as a part of the heritage
linking not only the Croatian and the French cul¬
tures
-
both territorially and in time, but also the
generations of today with all the earlier owners and
users of this illuminated manuscript; and finally, on
the occasion of the Academy's 150th anniversary,
to once again lay emphasis upon the founder of the
Gallery
-
Bishop
Josip Juraj
Strossmayer-
and his
most valuable legacy.
The Academy's tasks are carried out through
its Departments, which had until
1972
borne an¬
other name in the Croatian language. The work¬
ing structure of the departments is made up of full
members, while corresponding and associate mem¬
bers belong to their broader structure.
Currently, on its
150*
birthday, the Croatian
Academy of Sciences and Arts includes nine de¬
partments:
1.
The 1st Department of Social Sciences en¬
compasses historical sciences and archaeology, law,
sociology, political sciences, philosophy, economy
and demography. Research is carried out at the fol¬
lowing research units: the Institutes for Historical
and Social Sciences in Zagreb (and its historical
sciences, archaeology, ethnology, and economic
research divisions) and
Rijeka;
the Institutes for
Historical Sciences in
Zadar
and
Dubrovnik;
the
Adriatic Institute in Zagreb; the
Juraj Križanić
Cabinet of Legal, Political and Sociological Sci¬
ences in Zagreb; and interdisciplinary institutes in
Split,
Varaždin, Osijek, Vinkovci
and
Bjelovar.
2.
The 2nd Department of Mathematical, Physi¬
cal and Chemical Sciences explores mathematics,
elementary and multidimensional geometry and
topology; further, it does research in classic, atomic
and nuclear physics; whilst in the domain of chemi¬
stry, it does structural research of inorganic and
bioinorganic compounds.
3.
The 3rd Department of Natural Sciences in¬
cludes two branches of scientific research
-
biologi¬
cal and geological (macro-fauna and micro-fauna;
cellular biology and molecular genetics; ecology;
physiology; immunology; and biochemistry).
_ 4.
Until
1947,
when the Department of Natu¬
ral and Medical Sciences was established, dis¬
tinguished doctors of medicine had been elected
Academy members according to their other scien¬
tific or artistic inclinations, i.e. members of either
the Department of the Arts or the Department of
Philosophy and Social Sciences. As an indepen¬
dent body, the Department of Medical Sciences has
existed since its establishment in
1950.
5.
The Department of Philological Sciences
has
-
under the name of the Department of His¬
tory and Philology
-
been a part of the Croatian
Academy from the very beginning, as one of the
Academy's tasks is to care for the study of lan¬
guage and literature, with a special emphasis on
the care for the Croatian language and its literary
monuments. As of
1869,
the department has made
public critical editions of old Croatian literary texts
(Stari pisci hrvatski
/Early Croatian Writers/) and
of old Croatian authors who used Latin
(Hrvatski
latinisti
/Croatian Latinists/).
Today, within the Department of Philological
Sciences, the members of which participate in nu¬
merous national and international projects, com¬
mittees for lexicography, dialectology, onomastics,
etymology, Oriental studies and Croatian
Latinism
are active.
6.
The Department of Literature has, since its
earliest beginnings, developed the scientific, lite¬
rary, historical, aesthetic and critical valorisation of
the Croatian literature. It has so far discussed and
continues to discuss equally not only all eras in the
Croatian literary history, but also poetic, dramatic
and prose achievements and authors. In this con¬
text, the editions
Stari pisci hrvatski
/Early Croa¬
tian Writers/ and
Grada za povijest književnosti
hrvatske
/Documents for the History of the Croa¬
tian Literature/ ha\
q
been published since
1897.
Apart from these Academy editions, which are of
great importance for the Croatian literature, in the
course of time other
-
specialised
-
editions started
to be published as well
(Ljetopis
/Annals/;
Starine
/Antiquities/). Almost each of them includes pa-
322
pers
that have not only initiated the research of the
Croatian literary heritage, but also offered critical
valorisation of the works written by pre-revival
Croatian authors, from the south as well as from
the north of Croatia.
In accordance with the new Statute of the
Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, the De¬
partment of Contemporary Literature was renamed
to the Department of Literature, with the clear ex¬
planation that the Department had not even until
that time been concerned only with studying the
contemporary Croatian literature, but also with
exploring the national literature of the earlier, pre-
-revival period.
7.
The Department of Fine Arts, established
in
1919
as the Department of the Arts, originally
encompassed fine arts, architecture, literature and
music; it included as full members
Bela
Csikós
Sessia,
Klement
Menci
Crnčić
and Milan
Pilar,
and
as honorary members
Vlaho
Bukovac,
Celestin
Medović, Ivan Meštrović and
Pavle
Jovanović.
Its formation enabled the beginning of systematic
activity in the area of enhancing and studying fine
arts, architecture, literature and music.
8.
The Department of Music and Musicology.
Following the brief existence of the sixth Depart¬
ment of Fine Arts and Music and its Music Section
(1952),
Stjepan Šulek
interceded for an indepen¬
dent Department of the Art of Music to be esta¬
blished; this happened toward the end of
1953,
and
later, in
1985,
it was renamed to the Department of
Music and Musicology.
The Department of Music and Musicology has
been dedicated to the promotion and publication of
music works created by Croatian composers, and to
scientific research, analysis and evaluation of the
Croatian music heritage since its very beginning.
Distinguished Croatian composers, musicians and
musicologists had been members of this depart¬
ment:
Stjepan Šulek,
Boris Papandopulo,
Jakov
Gotovac,
etc.
9.
The Department of Technical Sciences,
within its scientific projects, carries out research
in the area of digital signal and image processing;
explores the fields of oil and gas mining; deals with
the strategic development of traffic routes in the
Republic of Croatia, etc.
On its 150th anniversary, the Croatian Academy
of Sciences and Arts is fully aware of the fact that a
society must respect moral values
ifit
aims at being
stable and civilised. The Academy therefore wishes
to remind the Croatian public that morality cannot
be introduced by a decree of the authorities, but
that it may only be built within the society itself by
the means of conducting an adequate valorisation
of social phenomena, which may gradually lead to
the knowledge of the good and social correctives
needed for the application of the legal norm, and
thereby consequently to the implementation of the
rale of law, in respect of the recognised needs of
citizens and legal entities.
Based on its mission and role in the society,
the Academy endeavours
—
via its members
-
to
establish the situation in the society in a scientific
manner, and subsequently, to explore what aim
our society should be able to achieve in future and
what efforts should be made in order for that aim
to be achieved. As the advisor to the people, the
Academy
-
just as it suits the highest scientific
institution in the country
-
needs to assemble all
the available scientists and scholars in all relevant
fields in order for the scientific research to be ac¬
celerated.
