In The Transit of Empire, Jodi A. Byrd explores how indigeneity functions as transit, a trajectory of movement that serves as pre cedent within U.S. imperial history. Byrd argues that contempo rary U.S. empire expands itself through a transferable “Indianness” that facilitates acquisitions of lands, territories, and resources. Exam ining an array of literary texts, historical moments, and pending legislations, Byrd demonstrates that inclusion into the multicultural cosmopole does not end colonialism as it is purported to do. Rather, that inclusion is the very site of the colonization that feeds U.S. empire. Byrd contends that the colonization ofAmerican Indian and indigenous nations is the necessary ground from which to reimagine a fhture not only where the losses of indigenous peoples are visible but where they have agency to transform life on their own lands and on their own terms. |

Examining an array of literary texts, historical moments, and pending legislations--from the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma's vote in 2007 to expel Cherokee Freedmen to the Native Hawaiian Government Reorganization bill--Byrd demonstrates that inclusion into the multicultural cosmopole does not end colonialism as it is purported to do. Rather, that inclusion is the very site of the colonization that feeds U.S. empire.Byrd contends that the colonization of American Indian and indigenous nations is the necessary ground from which to reimagine a future where the losses of indigenous peoples are not only visible and, in turn, grieveable, but where indigenous peoples have agency to transform life on their own lands and on their own terms"--Provided by publisher Indians of North America / Government relations / History Indians of North America / Colonization / United States Imperialism / Social aspects / United States Racism / United States / History Geschichte Gesellschaft Indianer Rassismus (DE-588)4076527-1 gnd rswk-swf Kritik (DE-588)4033229-9 gnd rswk-swf Kolonialismus (DE-588)4073624-6 gnd rswk-swf Indianer (DE-588)4026718-0 gnd rswk-swf Imperialismus (DE-588)4026651-5 gnd rswk-swf Selbstbestimmung (DE-588)4135889-2 gnd rswk-swf USA USA (DE-588)4078704-7 gnd rswk-swf USA (DE-588)4078704-7 g Imperialismus (DE-588)4026651-5 s Indianer (DE-588)4026718-0 s Selbstbestimmung (DE-588)4135889-2 s Kritik (DE-588)4033229-9 s Kolonialismus (DE-588)4073624-6 s Rassismus (DE-588)4076527-1 s DE-604 Digitalisierung UB Bamberg - ADAM Catalogue Enrichment application/pdf http://bvbr.bib-bvb.de:8991/F?func=service&doc_library=BVB01&local_base=BVB01&doc_number=024512944&sequence=000002&line_number=0001&func_code=DB_RECORDS&service_type=MEDIA Inhaltsverzeichnis Digitalisierung UB Augsburg - ADAM Catalogue Enrichment application/pdf http://bvbr.bib-bvb.de:8991/F?func=service&doc_library=BVB01&local_base=BVB01&doc_number=024512944&sequence=000003&line_number=0002&func_code=DB_RECORDS&service_type=MEDIA Klappentext |
