Messenger
of the Romanian Sion,
presents, including all social, spiritual and „national
implications, the intellectual becoming of a Romanian family,
emblematic for the old province Transylvania, subject to the
Hungarian Kingdom

the HOSSU OF
MILAŞ
FAMILY. The
most outstanding spokeman in the history of his family was the
bishop (and later cardinal
-
the first Romanian cardinal),
Driuliu Hossu. He is defined in the book as a Saint of the
National Unity. If saints have in their specific substance „Faith
and „Sacrifice , then bishop Hossu was he who, showing
openly his faith in the religious union with Rome, in
1700,
also
assumed the sacrifice for its major national consequences in one
of the astral moments of the history of the Romanian people
-
December
1st 1918.
His oath, recorded in an intimate diary, after being ordained as a
priest:
,¿et
my tongue stick to my throat, if I won t remember
you, Sion!
-
understanding by „Sion both the Church and the
Nation
-
was made actual again when he became a bishop.
Immediately becoming part of the dramatic realities during the
First World War and the oppressive regime Romanians lived in,
believing in the re-creative capacity of his nation, he did not
suffered himself to be offended by some pessimistic part of the
intellectuals, namely that he had fallen into lethargy for ever.
Wherever he was going, during his canonic visits, he was seen
as a ray of light in the darkness of sufferings Romanians
experienced.

He was the first leader of an institution that broke the old
shackled links. By means of a circular-manifest he addressed
the priests, who had always animated the „national life , asking
that they obeyed a National Council in Transylvania because:
„you should be governed by a single thought, that of being
Risen . Called to Alba Iulia, December
1st 1918,
the Romanian
people manifested their desire for national emancipation
through union with Romania.
When bishop Iuliu got ready to read the decision of the Great
National Assembly and said: „This is God s justice and
punishment...
the clouds above Alba Iulia dissipated. „This is
the time of our joy
-
exulted the bishop together with the over
100.000
Romanians who received the divine sign. „The
sufferings of ages are dressed in light, as the sun is pouring
now over us its light, with blessings.
Being blessed this way, the Romanians entered the „Union
Constellation with clear souls, given to the work and struggle
for approved history. The bishop dedicated himself to this great
national act by promoting an
apoštoláte
for the new country and
the integration of the Greek-Catholic church in the unitary state.
He directly took part in the combatants mobilization for the
„Transylvanian army , necessary for the liberation of the north
and north-west parts overran by Hungarian Bolshevists; in
choosing the „Constituent , and the elaboration of the
Constitution of Great Romania; in the negotiations for agreeing
upon the
„Concordate
between Romania and Vatican
-
a real
success for the country s interests, admitted as such
internationally as well; in the Parliament as a senator,
promoting laws which were able to confer on Romania the
position of a legal and democratic state, etc. He struggled in an
offensive way, specific to the United Church to determine the
acknowledgement the right to a free existence, and equally

justified in the eternity of the Romanian Nation and of the
Greek-Catholic church. In
1928,
at the end of the parliamentary
discussions concerning the Law of the General Regime of Cults
-
particularly impressed by the enthusiasm with which the
Greek-Catholics fought to defend their church and their priests,
by the firmness of their best apostle, bishop luliu Hossu, by the
truths he sustained
-
the Government made essential corrections
in the texts which were under discussion.
The Greek-Catholics protestary movement, as well as the
priest s interventions in the Romanian Senate determined a
positive change in the confessional attitude of the Romanian
political class. The Greek-Catholics themselves decided to
organize themselves according to modern principles in order to
take care with their own forces of their Church and Faith. At the
congress of the General Association of the United Romanians,
November 24th
1929 -
association that was founded as a result
of various threatenings in Romanian politics
-
bishop luliu
insisted to include in the programme of the movement real
instructions, which sprang from the fighting tradition of the
„united : the development of a secular
apoštoláte
by secular
men, in order to strengthen faith, defending the United
Chuch,
and creating some citizans honest to whole Romania.
