Summary
South-western
Pomerania,
in particular the
Gorzów
Basin, the
Gorzów
Plateau, and
the
Myślibórz
Lake District, belonged in the Bronze and Early Iron Age to the cultural
border zone between major territories including Scandinavia, the Lower Elbe region
as well as the Lower Vistula region, Kujavia and the
Wielkopolska
region (H. Ma-
chajewski, J.
Rola
2006,
pp.
7-14).
It was characterized, in particular towards the end
of the Bronze Age and in the Iron Age, by numerous transformations in settlement
pattern having a form of short developmental sequences. These are manifested by the
emergence of small settlements and burial grounds ranging from a few to few dozen
burials (H. Machajewski
2006,
pp.
58-63).
The only exception comprised cemetery
at
Prądno, Myślibórz
county, dated back to the period from the late phase
A3
to the
beginnings of phase D, and made of
217
burials (T.
Hauptmann 2002).
The region
was also characterized by influx of numerous imports, in particular cloth adornments,
metal and glass vessels as well as individual weaponry items. It was also exposed to
external ideas on architecture and decoration pattern (see H. Machajewski in press).
These characteristic features made possible to taxonomically distinguish a few
small cultural groups of considerable heterogeneous character. Settlements in the
Marwice area, excavated on the route of
A3
motorway, are to be linked to two such
groups, namely the
Górzyca
group (Marwice, site
1)
and the Lubusz group (Marwice,
sites
5 & 13).

Górzyca
group

The settlement belongs to a small group of the early Iron Age si¬
tes from the Lower Oder Basin (S. Griesa
1982,
pp.
278-279, Karte 2-3;
R.
Wołą-
giewicz
1989,
pp.
309, Fig. 1;

pp.
127-130;
J. Affelski
et al.
2009,
pp.
141 -151 ).
It is located in central-eastern part of the territory occupied by the
Gó¬
rzyca
group in the early Iron Age. Decoration of the Marwice pottery may imply this
cultural affiliation of the settlement (Fig.
1).

hardly enlarged database of sites of the
Górzyca
group.
The group has been dated to the period stretching from the late HaC to the
late HaD/early pre-Roman Iron Age, which has been divided into two phases (see
S. Griesa
1982,
pp.
63).
The early phase is dated back to the late HaC while the late
one to HaC and the early pre-Roman Iron Age. The former phase is clearly embedded
in the late
Lusatian
tradition. The latter sequence marks the process of dispersal of
new elements associated with the early Jastorf tradition in eastern and north-eastern
Brandenurg, south-eastern
Meklemburg
and later the Lower Oder Basin and Western
Pomerania.
This process is manifested by the emergence of the Marianowo phase of
Jastorf culture in Western
Pomerania
(see R.
Wołągiewicz
1989,
pp.
307-321;
H. Ma-
chajewski
2006,
pp.
83-105).
The Marianowo settlement was probably occupied in
the second phase of the
Górzyca
group and, similarly to a majority of its settlements,
was in use until the beginnings of Jastorf culture. Impact of the early Jastorf tradition
on the development of the Marwice settlement is difficult to discern. This process has
hardly been recognized also in case of a vast majority of the
Górzyca
group sites in
Western
Pomerania.
The Lubusz group
Marwice, sites
5 & 13.
Both settlements from the Roman Iron Age belong to rare
sites of the Lubusz group dated back to the period from phase Bl to phase
Cla
(see
R.
Wołągiewicz
1981,
pp.
205-209;
R.

pp.
154-155,

pp.

2).
They were desi¬
gned in a very similar way. Rectangular square placed in central part of the settle¬
ment was surrounded by a subterranean dwelling, pits and hearths. These rectangular
dwelling structures were located
с

from each other. One cannot rule out a po¬
ssibility that these two structures (households?), located on the upper river terrace
and functioning at the same time, might have comprised one occupational horizon.
Similar complexes have also been found at
Rollwitz in
the Lower Oder
Pomerania
(V. Schmidt
2001,
pp.
389,
Abb.
2)
and
Dębczyno
in Central
Pomerania
(H.
Ma¬
chajewski
1981,
pp.
26-37).
These are characterized by dwelling structures placed
around centrally located squares forming some kind of nest patterns. The emergence
of these settlement patterns in Barbaricum can possibly be related to the increasingly
more evident differentiation of social and economic organization of numerous tribal
communities.
The character of the Lubusz group in Western
Pomerania,
and more generally in
the Lower Oder region, is very complex (Fig.
2).
This refers not as much as to its
chronology and cultural character but to its chorological aspect. While accepting an
impact of cultural elements contributing to its origin, namely those from the Elbe
region in addition to the Wielbark and
Przeworsk
cultures, their representativeness
for the entire region remains questionable. Accordingly, attempts have been made to
distinguish the so-called 'Wkra group' out of its territory. This is to cover the Wkra
Land, that is an area located west to the lower Oder covering the territory stretching
from the basin of
Ucker, Randow
and lower
Penne
(see A. Leube
1968,
pp.
283;

13-16).
This group has supposedly been characterized, in oppo¬
sition to the Lubusz Land, by a distinct pre-Roman tradition originating from Jastorf
culture. This hypothesis was questioned by R.
Wołągiewicz
(1981,
pp.
205-209).
He
argued that the pre-Roman occupation of the Wkra Land, similarly to the Lubusz
Land, began only in phase Bl and has hardly revealed any elements of the pre-Ro¬
man origin. At the same time, both areas were unified by the
Przeworsk
influences as
manifested by a tradition of depositing weapons in graves (M. D.
&
R.
Wołągiewi-
czowie
1963,
pp.
72-75).
Another appealing issue is to define a peculiarity of the Lubusz group in rela¬
tion to the Luboszyce culture. According to R.
Wołągiewicz
(1981,
pp.
205),
it might
have originally spread out as far as the
Nysa
and
Bóbr
basin (see G.
Domański
1996,
pp.
153,
map II), finding itself within the reach of the Luboszyce culture from the
early Roman Iron Age onwards (G.
Domański
1979;
G.
Domański
1996,
s.
154).
Due
to dearth of archaeological evidence, the southern edge of the Lubusz group, in parti¬
cular in the early Roman Iron Age, remains unspecified.
Three stages have been distinguished in the development of the Lubusz group
(R.
Wołągiewicz
1981,
pp.
205): (1)
phase Bl
-
presence of elements of the Lower
Elbe origin,
(2)
phase B2
-
presence of elements of the Lower Elbe and
Przeworsk
culture origin, and
(3)
phase B2/cl
-
emergence of the Wielbark elements and possi¬
bly also those of Scandinavian origin. Settlements at Marwice were probably foun¬
ded towards the end of the second stage and were occupied throughout the third sta¬
ge. It was the period in which a new settlement-cultural network was being formed in
Western
Pomerania
and in the Middle Oder river area as manifested by the
Dębczyno
group and Luboszyce culture.
Analysis of archaeological materials from the Marwice settlements seems to indi¬
cate that elements of the Wielbark tradition in the Lubusz group emerged earlier than
previously thought and it probably took place towards the end of phase B2. Addition¬
ally, contrary to previous claims, impact of elements of the Lower Elbe origin upon
decoration of pottery vessels was considerably more significant.
