In the autumn of
1790,
the
Gubernium,
the Transylvanian Principality s organ of government, was moved to
Kolozsvár
making the town a capital. Parliaments were also held here henceforth. The gubernators ran an
opulent court, and families of the nobility competed with each other as well in building ornate late baroque style
palaces. The voice of the nobility resonates through the town in terms of architecture, while the citizens admire
and follow them. Starting from the 1790s, the walls and turrets of the town came to be seen as obstacles in the
way of development. They were usually sold together with the adjacent plots and buildings were erected in their
place. Cobbles were laid in the streets and public lighting was also established by
1827.
The two-storey Saint
George barracks was built for the soldiers, so that the locals would no longer have to provide accommodation
for them. The classicist style council house was also completed by
1845.
From
1792,
the town had a permanent
company of actors; the first Hungarian stone theatre was built for them in
Farkas
Street in
1821.
Kolozsvár
had
its first newspaper by
1827,
and a second one was launched in
1841.
A casino was established, where reformed
ideas found their home. The Italian fencing master,
Biasini
opened a comfortable hotel and
café
in
1837,
where
Franz Liszt and
Sándor Petőfi
both spent guest nights. There were
26
registered guilds in
1845
with a total of
735
members, but smaller factories began to operate as well. A beet sugar factory was established in
1839
followed
by an agricultural machine factory in
1840.
Settlements on the outskirts of
Kolozsvár
provided the town with
fruits and vegetables. A new tower was erected next to the Catholic church in the main square, and all of the
other denominations started to build new churches as well, while their educational institutions also received
new, more spacious quarters. Jews only had a prayer house made of wattle at this time, but the Greek Catholic
and Eastern Orthodox churches were authorised to build small temples. During the Hungarian Revolution of
1848,
Kolozsvár
was considered a centre, an initiator of events and the town was overtaken by the Habsburgs
without resistance on numerous occasions. It was here that Parliament proclaimed the union of Hungary and
Transylvania on the 30th of March in
1848.
The population grew slowly during this period;
17,465
inhabitants
were accounted for in
1850,12,000
of whom identified themselves as Hungarian,
2,500
as Romanian, and
950
as German in terms of nationality.
The cemetery reached the hilltop where a Unitarian garden was established in
1840.
Since burials in
churches were forbidden from
1798,
the Catholics also started laying their deceased to rest here. The first
Jewish cemetery was established next to the eastern side of
Házsongárd.
Tombstones were still used, but
ornate baroque columns and neo-gothic obelisks also started to appear, even an occasional statue could
be seen. The
insignias
were still verbose, but, with only a few exceptions, all of them were in Hungarian by
this time. Tombstones preserve the memories of
Mihály
Nagybaczoni Incze
(1795),
a Reformed dean,
Dániel
Ketskeméti
(1796),
a tanner,
Antal
Butzi
(1806),
a cooper, and
István Gyulai
(1834),
a Reformed chorister.
Many Reformed and Unitarian priests and teachers were laid to rest in the
Házsongárd
cemetery. Prominent
figures among them are
György Méhes
(1809),
Mihály Szathmári Pap
(1812),
Ferenc Szilágyi
(1828),
István
Lengyel
(1833),
all Reformed professors;
and György Markos
(1813)
and Dávid Molnos
(1836),
both Unitarian
professors.
János Herepei
(1813)
and
Sámuel Intze
(1839)
were Reformed priests;
Miklós Ótordai Székely
(1843)
was a Unitarian bishop. Typical tombstones of the era that are worth mentioning among the doctors
and chemists are those of two
Sámuel Patakis
(1804,1824),
Tobias Mauksch
(1802)
and
Sámuel Gyarmathi
(1830).
Gyarmathi is also world famous as the founder of Finno-Ugric linguistics. Starting from the 1840s,
actors were buried here as well, known among them are
János Kótsi Patkó
(1842),
a director, and
Pál
Gidófalvi Jancsó
(1845),
who was the first Hungarian comedian.
Ádám
Kendeffi
(1834)
was known for his
progressive ideas and also as a popular sportsman. His obelisk is guarded by lion statues. An artistic statue
of a woman decorates the grave of the wife of Count
József Teleki
and grandmother of Colonel
SándorTeleki
(1846).
Office-holders and prominent figures of the reform age were
Sándor Bölöni Farkas
(1842),
a traveller
of America and a writer,
Mihály Szentiváni
(1842),
a folk poet, and
Pál Asztalos
(1849),
a revolutionist and
a politician. Although his resting place is not in the cemetery, a column was erected in tribute to
András
Tamás
(1849),
who was a martyr of the revolution.
