Summary
Since the middle ages, hospitals have always been part of the urban life. Accord¬
ingly, their perception and development differed from place to place and social
demands.
Western European scholarship has started to deal with the history of the hos¬
pitals at the beginning of the 20th century, while in Hungary this topic got into
the research in the 90es of the 20th century. In
2002,
a research group has been
established for the investigations of the early modern Transylvanian hospitals.
The first results started to come once with the publishing of the account books
of the Holy Spirit hospital of
Cluj
(1601-1650)
in
2006.
Since then, articles and
studies have been published by the members of the team. The present volume
fits to the tendency of primary source editions that have been the main goal of
this research team for its first period of activity. Thus, the accounts of the Saint
Elisabeth hospital
(1601-1650),
now published, and the formerly published Holy
Spirit hospital accounts cover very well and open a wide range of investigations
for the administrative and economic functioning of the two charity institutions
of the town
Cluj
for the first half of the
ľľ 1
century.
In the medieval and early modern town of
Cluj,
two hospitals have functioned
permanently and one periodically. The Saint Elisabeth hospital has the longest
and richest history; it functioned from the 14th until the 20th century. About the
Holy Spirit hospital there are information from the 15th century, until the 17th cen¬
tury.
The Saint Elisabeth hospital has the most extensive source material that has
been hitherto scarcely published. On one hand there is a separate corpus of
documents from the hospital s archive, which is kept in the Saint Michael parish
church. On the other hand, there are many sources in the archive of the town,
present day kept in the Romanian National Archives. Despite of the vast source
material only a few documents have been published by
Elek Jakab
in
1870.
The
present volume contains the accounts of the hospital from
1601
until
1650
and.
There are four distinguished periods in the history of the Saint Elisabeth hos¬
pital.

The medieval period started once with the establishment of the hospital, and
ended with the Reformation or even earlier in the late medieval period, when the
institution was transferred from clerical administration to the lay management.
The second phase is the lay administration period that has been barely re¬
searched. The sources until
1586
are not profuse either, but after that the hospital
accounts and the town administration records provide plenty of information in
order to outline the life in the early modern hospital. This period was far from
being unitary, since the historical events that influenced the town life, bent the
hospital administration, too. In this period the town lost its free royal town privi¬
lege, went through financial difficulties. Consequently, for yet unknown reason
the administration of the two hospitals was fused, and the two hospital masters
worked together.
Between
1718
and
1768
there was a constant struggle for the Saint Elisabeth
hospital between the town administration and the Catholic church. This long
fight ended once with the catholic restoration in
1768.
This date represents the
beginning of the third important stage in the history of this institution.
The time between
1768
and the communist secularization, has been also
scarcely researched, although it has the most extensive unexploited source ma¬
terial, while the archive of the communist period is still inaccessible.
The present edition and the research activity of the research group focuses on
the period of lay administration, basically on the early modern and modern pe¬
riod. Besides the accounts of the two hospitals, many other types of documents
(charters, donations, testaments, town protocols, inventories or even court cas¬
es) have been studied in order to shape a more comprehensive historical image of
the two hospitals. Thus, the early modern history of the Saint Elisabeth hospitals
appears to be a very interesting.
In
1524
the hospital master called
Antal Dezső,
was a nobleman from the
neighborhood of the town, who later donated his estates to the hospital, and
moreover, moved in. This fact supports the idea that the lay administration was
installed in this hospital already in the late middle ages. One the other hand it
also opens new questions. It would be interesting to know, how a nobleman could
run an important town institution, when as later examples show, the masters of
the hospitals were appointed by the council of the
centumviri.
Since it is the only
known case when no burghers bore this office, it can be asserted as an excep¬
tional case. All the more, the peculiarity of this kind of actions is suggested by the
long probate suits impelled by the relatives of
Antal Dezső.
The plague in
1586-1587
must have been of great consequence not only for
the town, but also for the hospitals in
Cluj.
The numbers of inmates must have
increased, and the casualties were countless.
However, the secondary literature made no connections so far between the
Saint Elisabeth hospital and the Saint Elisabeth Kalandzunft (mortuary guild).
Thought, it must have been a connection besides being both charity institutions.
They could have been of same medieval origins, from the times when the hospital
presumably had a chapel of its own with a Saint Elisabeth altar where this mortu¬
ary guild could have formed. Later, the worship of the saint was abolished and
remained its charity attribute. This presumption is somehow sustained by the
fact that the master of the Saint Elisabeth mortuary guild in
1624,
was formerly a

hospital master in the Saint Elisabeth hospital. Further researches will hopefully
shed more light on this issue, too.
Important to notice, that in spite of the secularization and the turn of the town
to anti-Trinitarianism, the hospitals kept their names throughout the history.
Although the research and the source editions are far from being completed,
many issues of the hospital s functions and activity can be already presented.
One might study the management activity of the hospital masters from
1586,
or
incomes and the expenses of the institution, the inner organization. There are
information, likewise, on the inmates and everyday life, or even on the furnish-
ment.
The managers of the hospital s goods were the masters appointed by the town,
and supervised by the town council. Basically, every investment or acquisition
had to be approved by the town authorities, while the admission of new inmates
was also controlled by the councilors.
The first donation to the Saint Elisabeth hospital was a mill, donated by king
Louis I in
1366
that functioned even in the early modern times, and which was
redeveloped with three wheels after an order of Queen
Izabella
in
1558.
The greatest donation, however, was made by the inmates
Antal Dezső
and
his wife, Anna, in
1525.
They left by testament half of the village
Mèra
with all
its commodities. These properties itself meant a great income, that demanded a
separate administration. To these estates were added new privileges in second
half of the sixteenth century. In
1556
was donated the half of the tithe of the
Mera
village, that later brought a broader tax exemption.
Besides the substantial
Mèra
possessions, the hospital enlarged its town
properties by donations and allowances, too.
In
1557
and
1558
the town council brought several decisions to improve the
state of being of the hospital s real estates. Furthermore, the beer brewing was
declared town monopoly and the incomes were given to the poor. Although, in
1577
in the general town account a brewing house is listed belonging to the hos¬
pital, strikingly, there are no records on brewing in hospital that might suggest
that brewing was after all not very profitable. Reading this general town account,
the Saint Elisabeth hospital appeared to be a well-of institution of the town.
Among the movables there were goldsmith works and jewelries. Garden, vine¬
yard, plough-lands, meadow, woods, bakery, mills, manor-house and mansion,
town dwellings are listed as estates of the almshouse. In
1591,
worth to mention,
there were twenty books in the Saint Elisabeth hospital; most of them prayer- and
song-books, psalms and gospels, in Hungarian and German. Soon after, these
were sold out, according to a note on the same list.
These assets altered during the centuries; some of them were lost, sold or ex¬
changed, while new privileges were granted and extra sources of income were
added. By the end of the sixteenth century, a yearly salt donation was conferred
that notably raised the incomes of the hospitals. Besides, additional revenues
came from the property rents, victuals and wine selling.
All these economic and administrative functions needed a good manage¬
ment; hence the town released an instruction for the hospital master regarding
his after-reckonings in
1586.
Accordingly, they had to list separately the incomes

and the expenses, and the earnings had to come always first before the listing
of the costs. This way the town authorities tried to overcome the outrun of the
hospital s income.
As far as the spiritual care in the hospital is concerned, there are more pre¬
sumptions than data on this issue. Most probably, the priests of the town imple¬
mented this task in their daily activity.
Comparing the two hospitals, it can be inferred that the Saint Elisabeth alms-
house was wealthier and larger than the Holy Spirit. While in the Holy Spirit
were lodged between three and twelve persons, in the Saint Elisabeth hospital
the number of the inmates exceeded thirty. There were significant differences
concerning the incomes, too. The Holy Spirit annual revenues were around one
hundred and fifty florins, while the Saint Elisabeth earnings never went under
six hundred florins.
