The study deals with the late antique and early medieval history of the region between
the
Sava,
the
Drava,
and the Danube, i.e. the area of two Roman provinces,
Pannó¬
nia
Savia
and
Pannonia
Secunda
or
Pannonia Sirmiensis,
along with southern and
southwestern parts of
Pannonia
Prima, in
other words, mostly the territory known
as Lower
Pannonia
in the early Middle Ages, and
Slavonia
in later medieval times
(however, the larger part of the modern region of
Slavonia
and the whole of Syrmia
did not belong politically and administratively to the medieval Kingdom of
Slavonia).
In modern geographic and political terms, the researched area includes the Croatian
Međimurje
(Pannonia
Prima),
and the Croatian
Baranya (Pannonia
Secunda);
parts
of modern Slovenia, namely the eastern rim of the Dolenjsko region with the Gor-
janci mountain range or the Slovenian portion of the
Zumberačko Gorje
(Panonnia
Savia);
parts of modern Bosnia and Herzegovina, especially the southern part of the
Sava
valley
(Pannonia
Savia);
and parts of modern Serbia, namely the central and
eastern parts of Syrmia
(Pannonia
Secunda).
Chronologically, the study covers the
chronological span of seven centuries, from the late 4th to the late 11th centuries. The
research is based on four levels of analysis: the political and administrative changes
from the disintegration of the Roman system to the emergence of early medieval
forms of rules; the movement of peoples and ethnic changes from the Hunnic and
Germanic to the Avar, Slav, and Hungarian periods with special regard to the fate of
the native Romanized populations, the early medieval ethnogenetic and accultura¬
tion processes, and appearance of new ethnic identities; the abandonment of old set¬
tlements and the creation of new ones with special regard to settlement countinuity
and shifts in southern
Pannonia;
the fundamental features of Christianity and of the
ecclesiastical organization in late antique South
Pannonia,
and re-Christianization
of the early Middle Ages. Particular attention is given to problems of continuity and
discontinuity in late antiquity and the early Middle Ages.
During the late antiquity and early Middle Ages, the region between the
Sava,
the
Drava
and the Danube underwent a long-lasting transformations, which cannot be
viewed in sufficient details due to a lack of relevant literary and archaeological evi-

dence.
However, the
general
conclusion is that the fundamental changes in the south
ern
Pannonian
area were basically not different than those which diachronically hap¬
pened in the neighbouring regions. Irreparable decay of the late antique structures
in the region between the rivers
Drava, Sava
and Danube began with the arrival of
Alatheus and Saphrax tripartite group of peoples in the late 370s. The devastations
brought about by the Ostrogoths, the Alans and the Huns seriously disturbed the
situation in the
Pannonian
provinces, ended favourable economic growth of previous
times and destroyed the safety of municipal and rural communities. Although the
southern
Pannonian
area much less suffered from movements of peoples in the first
half of the 5th century AD and the Hunnic conquests, the Huns inflicted a final
blow on the weakened Roman administrative structures and opened the way for the
Germanic peoples (the Ostrogoths, the Gepids, the Lombards, the Suevi) to domi¬
nate
Pannonia,
which became evident with the fall of the Hunnic
megastate.
While
the Ostrogothic rule during the second period of their presence in southern
Pannó¬
nia
was marked by their efforts in re-establishing the order in the provinces between
the
Sava,
the
Drava
and the Danube, and the renewal of provincial administration,
which ceased to exist since the Hunnic times, the effects of Gepid and Lombard rule
helped the final disintegration of provincial organization. After the fall of Sirmium
under the Avar sway in
582
AD the last remnants of Roman influence in the region
between the
Sava,
the
Drava
and the Danube were effectivelly crushed, and the area
was taken over by the Slavs and Slavicized populations. The Avar domination in the
Pannonian
basin crumbled in confrontation with the Franks who created the princi¬
pality of Lower
Pannonia
on the ruins of the Avar state in southern
Pannonia
prob¬
ably already in the early 9th century. The principality of Lower
Pannonia
retained,
as a Frankish political creation, its territorial integrity during the entire 9th century,
and perished due to attacks of the Hungarians at the end of the 9th and the begin¬
ning of the 10th century. The Hungarians established their influence in the eastern
part of the region between the
Sava,
the
Drava
and the Danube in the first half of
the 10th century, while the rulers of the Croatian principality of
Dalmaţia,
i.e. the
Kingdom of Croatia, appear to have used the absence of an organized authority in
the western part of the area to put it gradually under their control as far as the river
Drava.
The end of this period was marked by spreading of the Hungarian rule into
the western part of the region between the
Sava,
the
Drava
and the Danube in
1091.
It was an event with which the history of medieval
Slavonia
began.
