THE THRILLING STORY OF THE CONTEST TO
UNCOVER THE PLANETS MOST ELUSIVE SECRET
A mystery unsolved for thousands of years. It had
confounded the ancient Greeks and baffled the most
eminent minds of the Victorian era. In
1856.
the final
search began to solve one of the great geographical
unknowns of the age

the source of the White Nile.
Six men and one woman, some of the greatest
explorers who ever lived, risked their lives and their
reputations in the name of this quest. Showing
exceptional courage and extraordinary resilience,
Richard Burton and John Hanning Spckc, Florence
and Samuel Baker. James Grant. David Livingstone
and Henry Morton Stanley journeyed through East
and Central Africa into unmapped territory. They
discovered the great lakes Tanganyika and Victoria,
navigated the upper Nile and the Congo, and
suffered the ravages of flesh-eating ulcers, malaria
and deep spear wounds. Some would resort to sheer
ruthlcssncss and double-crossing for the fame and
glory that beckoned. Not all would return.
Using new research. Tim Jeal, author of the bestselling
Stanley, tells the story of these epic expeditions,
while also examining the tragic consequences the
Nile search has had on Uganda and Sudan to this day.
