SECOND NATIONAL CONFERENCE-FORUM
OF THE RESEARCHERS IN
POPULATION
AGEING IN BULGARIA,

information)
This conference-forum is a response to the ongoing since many years
challenge of ageing in Bulgaria, being among the first countries starting
population ageing yet in the 50th of the last century and accounting for
more than
17%
of older people of
65
and above.
The scientific community is well aware with the problems and
succeeded in many research areas and publications as well as by taking
part in formulating and performing the government Demographic
strategy of Bulgaria
2006 - 2020.
The idea of inventarization of the
performed research by initiating a data base and of integration of
research topics on ageing belongs to the Centre for Population Studies
(CPS) at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. In
2007
the First National
conference-forum on ageing was organized supported by the Ministry
of Labour and Social Policy and the National Insurance Institute, when
the ERA-AGE project and the European activities on ageing have
been presented and the integration of the ageing research activities in
Bulgaria initiated.
The Second National conference is a forum of researches
-
new or
already involved in joint activities or succeeded in research on ageing
and participated in the national initiatives in the scope of the two well
known projects ERA-AGE

and FUTURAGE

A Road Map for Ageing Research, funded in
2009
according to the EC
VII
Framework Programme. As a partner of the
two projects CPS is a coordinator of the two projects and responsible
for the objectives assigned to the country. Accordingly the CPS
organized a Conference on Ageing and Health

following the relevant work package of the ERA-AGE
2
project and

issued a Proceedings, which has been presented and discussed by the
2010
Conference-forum on ageing. There it has been presented also
summary of the National Consultations performed as a part of the
Project objectives of FUTURAGE, regarding the definition of the main
key priorities which have to be focused on the perspectives of the next
15
years by preparing the definitive ageing research road map.
The importance of the two projects is well underlined by presenting
them as a first item of the conference-forum by the coordinator of the
project in Bulgaria prof.
B. Dávidov.
No doubt that the conference
was
tö
present an overview of recent efforts to perform and coordinate
the ageing research, having in mind the specific challenges in the
country. The topics have been presented and largely discussed by
the participants, following the presentation of the director of the two
projects in Bulgaria, assoc. prof. G. Mihova. The paper stressed on the
recent topics on ageing in the field of gerontology, social, economics
and environmental factors and health and wellbeing in later life, on
the recent efforts to coordinate ageing research in the country and to
convince the stakeholders in the meaning of the timely understandings
and dealing with the ageing policy and cares.
A separate paper presented by the assoc. prof. K. Onkov discussed
the reached issues of the projects by the involvement of data base on
ageing in Bulgaria, registrating the performed programmes, projects
and research in the country and collecting statistical data on population
ageing by gender and country's districts.
The most important meaning of the conference-forum is in the at¬
tempt to unify the existing and new researchers on ageing. The discus¬
sions show the readiness of Bulgarian scientists to exchange knowledge
and to work in interdisciplinary teams, underlying the troubles caused
by the lack of research infrastructure and of involvement of non-aca¬
demic research users like stakeholders and older people.
A special Declaration has been accepted by the attendees
-
medical
doctors, sociologists, demographers, statisticians approving the com¬
mon attitude for working on ageing involving new prioritable topics
and technologies and the advanced ways of knowledge transfers and in-

tegrated work for the sake of the wellbeing of the older generation, i.e.
the parents in retire which merit the thankfulness and the consideration
of the younger generations.
This publication of the conference-forum's issues coincides with the
performance of the high-level Stakeholder Workshop for researchers,
flinders and policy makers, held in Brussels on

2010
aiming to
define and discuss the priorities for European ageing research in response
to the objectives of the FUTURAGE project. A detailed information re¬
garding the morning and afternoon programme is presented herewith by
prof. P. Naidenova. A special attention is paid on the presented results
from the performed workshops defining the key priorities after summa¬
rizing the mentioned above national consultations attitudes and as well
as on the group discussions on the four scientific themes according to the
morning session programme (applied here).
No doubt that the afternoon session hosted by
STOA
Committee
in the European Parliament has been the main accent of the workshop.
The keynotes concern the essential elements of the road map for ageing
research and the stakeholders' attitudes regarding the key priorities and
policies and by this way

shaping a new science of ageing, compiling
interdisciplinary knowledge of many scientists.
In its opening address the director of the FUTURAGE project prof.
Alan Walker, the Sheffield University, UK underlined that the Road
map for Ageing Research is to guide European research in this field
over the next
10-15
years and to contribute for long lasting knowledge
exchange and interdisciplinary approaches. This is not only the way to
develop policy on scientific basics but to base a new multidisciplinary
science of population. By their research and participation in the two
EC projects on ageing the Bulgarian researchers on ageing contribute
to creating a new policy on ageing build on a new science on ageing.
