SUMMARY
The author describes in his book the first half of the third electoral term in the
First Czechoslovak Republic
(1929 - 1932)
focussing on the activity and relations
of Slovak Catholics and Lutherans joined together in Hlinka s Slovak People s
Party
(HSĽS)
and the Slovak National Party (SNS). It was a period of change
in the relationship of these two parties working in Slovakia, change from the
complete refusal to cooperate in the
1920s,
a result of tense interdenominational
relations between Slovak Catholics and Lutherans, through initial cooperation
after the elections in
1929
and at the start of the
1930s,
to declaration of the
Zvo¬
len
Manifesto in October confirming close cooperation between the two political
subjects, i.e. the Slovak People s Party and Slovak Lutherans
-
nationalists.
The author attempts to describe these events in the context of important events
of
1929
to
1932.
In the first chapter he describes the situation after the parlia¬
mentary elections in October
1929
in the internal political scene of the First Re¬
public and in the party structures of the
HSĽS
and SNS. In this chapter we can
find the first post-election of the
HSĽS
and SNS in the Czechoslovak parliament
-
the national assembly. The next part deals with consolidation in the ranks of the
people s party in
1930
and efforts at creating a Catholic bloc of opposition Chris¬
tian political parties: the
HSĽS,
the Czech People s Party, the Hungarian and
German Christian Socialists. The chapter also considers the main reasons for the
failure. The third chapter looks at the basic attitudes of Slovak emigrants-irreden¬
tists, led by
František
Jehlička,
towards Slovak autonomy and their plans to cre¬
ate a Global Union of Slovaks , also describes an anti-presidential flyer and the
main organizations and magazines of American Slovaks
-
compatriots in USA
at the start of the
1930s.
Further it looks at the appeal proceedings in the famous
trial of Dr.
Vojtech
Tuka
and
co.,
which took place in the spring of
1930
in Brati¬
slava. In the fifth chapter the author describes the second unsuccessful proposal
of the
HSĽS
to implement Slovak autonomy. This second proposal was written in
a pedantic and legal way and was almost incomprehensible to a layman. For the
reader, the analysis of an interview with President
T. G.
Masaryk
for the Austrian
newspaper
Neue Freie Presse
may be interesting. It was led by the English repor¬
ter,
E. W.
Poison Newman, from the London General Press agency. In it,
Masaryk
expressed his opinions on sensitive subjects such as the Polish corridor and revi¬
sion of the Hungarian border. The next part describes the return of Milan
Hodža
to national politics through the people s daily,
Slovák.
A Lutheran and leader
of the agrarians in Slovakia,
Hodža
was one of the most influential politicians in
interwar Czechoslovakia.
The relations between the two largest Slovak denominations, Roman Catholics
and Lutherans, were damaged in April and May
1930
by the Dr.
Ľudovít Bazovský
case. He had been a functionary of the Slovak National Party, a member of the
executive committee of the
SNR
and of the revolutionary National Assembly. He
is an example of a Slovak nationalist who in the
1930s
finished in the services
of the Hungarian irredentists. The
Bazovský
case was connected to the
Tuka
trial
and is dealt with in the eighth chapter. The ninth looks at issues of schooling and

the straggle of Slovak politicians from the
HSĽS
and SNS to establish a Slovak
technical university. This chapter also gives the opinions of the then schools mi¬
nister, Ivan
Derer,
on the foundation of a technical university in Slovakia.
At the start of
1931,
the question about appointing a new president of the Slovak
country,
Jozef Országh,
arose; the problems and obstacles surrounding this appo¬
intment are dealt with in the tenth chapter. The next chapter looks at the Move¬
ment for Regionalism and Foundation of a National Slovak constitutions, as well
as at the Trans-Carpathian
Ruthenians.
The
regionalist
movement was supported
mostly by the agrarians and through it, the latter tried to economically stimu¬
late the individual regions of Slovakia so that they could reach the same econo¬
mic level as Bohemia and Moravia. Nationalists and populists also supported
this movement in that it encouraged the Slovak economy and the development
of separate areas in Slovakia; at the same time they stressed that regionalism
was not enough for Slovakia, that only Slovak autonomy could save the country,
autonomy enacted through the plans of the
HSĽS
and SNS.
A major affair on the Slovak and Czech cultural and political scene during this
time was that of the Slovak Rules of Grammar and Orthography, the main players
being Czech and Slovak linguists from the language section of
Matica sloven¬
ská
who prepared these new rules under the leadership of the Czech academic,
Václav
Vážný.
After publication in
1931,
academic debate between linguists then
escalated into conflict on a political level, the reason being that the new rules
contained many new formations and Czechisms, hence the refusal of Slovaks
to accept them. This is dealt with in the 12th chapter while the next looks at the

local elections
,
the preelection campaign and results of the
HSĽS
and SNS. The election results of the leading political parties in separate towns
and villages are given here.
Subsequent parts look at events of
1932
in Slovak society when results of the
global economic crisis had a major impact on both Slovak and Czechoslovak
society. How the two parties dealt with this crisis and the practical steps they
took towards the government is the focus of chapter
14.
The most important pro¬
test gatherings of the
HSĽS
and SNS, aimed at alerting opposition parties to the
unsolved problems of the Slovak economy, are described here.
In the next part the author looks at the April session of the executive committee
of the
HSĽS
and relations within the party from April to October
1932.
He explains
the course and significance of the meeting of the party s leading representatives on
April 11th
1932
in
Ružomberok
for the future of politics in the First Czechoslovakia.
The main speech at the meeting was given by
Jozef
Tiso,
who was becoming the
most important and influential functionary in the
HSĽS
alongside the ageing
Andrej Hlinka.
At the end of the meeting, a resolution was passed containing the
party s demands and criticizing the centralist government based in Prague, which
was undermining Slovakia culturally, educationally and economically.
The next chapter deals with the assembly of
Matica slovenská
which took place
on May 12th
1932
and which, even though it was a cultural institution, showcased
conflicts between centralism and autonomism. Czech academics led by
Václav
Vážný
resigned from
Matica slovenská
in protest at the way the meeting was

conducted.
HSĽS
and SNS officials who were at the assembly supported its run¬
ning, however, and joined ranks with critics of the new Slovak grammar rules.
One of the most important social events in the interwar period was the con¬
vention of Slovak youth in
Trenčianske Teplice
in June
1932
at which young edu¬
cated Slovaks of all denominations and parties were present. The significance
of the convention lay in the ability of young Slovaks to unite in their struggle
for a better life in Slovakia. The next part of the work focusses on the
Zvolen
Manifesto, which was passed at a demonstration for Slovak autonomy in the
town. This manifesto is one of the most important documents in modern Slovak
history, uniting forces struggling for autonomy during this time: Catholics from
the
HSĽS
and Lutherans from the SNS. The penultimate chapter looks at the
relationship between Slovak and Czech Catholics from the
HSĽS
and the Czech
People s Party in the years
1929
to
1932.
The Czech party, led by
Jan Šrámek,
established in
1925
a branch of the party in Slovakia, with Martin
Mičura
at the
helm. This led to a long-standing conflict with the
HSĽS.
The last, 20th chapter
examines the prominent personalities of Slovak Catholics and Lutherans,
Andrej
Hlinka
and Martin
Rázus.
