Dear readers,
This edition, presented to your attention, contains
certain data and documents on the history of Ros¬
tov-on-Don from the moment of foundation of Te-
mernitskaya customs, being the first ever administra¬
tive institution on the land of our future city. This book
has as its object to follow chronological sequence of
various events in the history of our city, provided the
reference to which serve different documents from
local archives: State archives of Rostov region and
those of the Center for official documentation on the
newest history of Rostov region, urban newspapers
and other periodicals, as well as the most authorita¬
tive researches, dedicated to the regional studies, ei¬
ther pre-revolutionary or contemporary ones.
It seems that the data and figures in the history
represent only elementary minimum and bases of the
chronological tables and reference books. However,
when it goes about the history of certain cities and set¬
tlements, save perhaps for the metropolis, the date it¬
self often becomes the object of different researches,
serves as a subject of hot discussions and starting
point for new investigations, beginning of compre¬
hensive regional studies. In this respect, the history
of Rostov-on-Don is very eloquent: as early as from
the archives of the fortress of St. Demetrius of Rostov
there were withdrawn certain documents for govern¬
mental needs; later on the archives of Municipal Duma
were considered unnecessary and sold shortsightedly
for peanuts at the bargains...During the years of Civil
War the scientists and local lore specialists saved, ex¬
erting all imaginable efforts, everything they could,
creating museums and searching for the best «safe
place». In the periods of persecutions, repressions and
later on of the «thawing»
timeframe
upon the multiple
orders «from above» they done away with much that
had been linked with a pre-revolutionary life of Rostov
and Nakhichevan-on-Don...
Nevertheless, an ineradicable interest towards
«native hearth
&
home» gradually and with difficulties
overcomes said grey unconsciousness: during previ¬
ous two decades there were re-edited, discovered and
published many pre-revolutionary researches about
Rostov-on-Don, which provide unprejudiced and clear-
cut idea about this city, its administrative, industrial
and financial institutions, offices, firms, partnerships,
schools, vocational schools, hospitals and even its
individuals and places of their work...They contain
amazingly rich material for any present day Rostovian,
being a successor of those
Rostovites,
who created a
solid foundation for the urban lifestyle and upon tak¬
ing care of the prosperity of their own enterprises and
plants, factories and offices, rendered assistance to
those who had required it, built temples and hospitals,
cobbled streets, developed public gardens and parks,
as well as erected monuments to those, whom they
have worshipped.

We are convinced in that the wave of interest to¬
wards pre-revolutionary history of the city still not
reached its peak: to this subject permanently address
many scientific works from the archives, museums and
higher education establishments of our city, as well as
some amateur authors, many of whom have become
well-known specialists in the sphere of regional stud¬
ies. In this respect the facts, presented in said edition,
undoubtedly not pretend for their completeness: we
only tried to trace the outline of our city life, to outline
main tendencies of the development and growth and,
possibly, to show unrepeated tokens of time and live
impressions of participants in general flow of events.
Fascination of the passed centuries will always draw
up thereto the sights and persistent attention and still
we are waiting new discoveries and findings, linked
with early Rostovian period.
Of no less interesting and wonderful discovery be¬
comes Soviet history, seemingly being not so remote:
in the books published during 1960-1980S, it is often
represented in the form of fulfilled and over fulfilled
annual and 5-year plans, furnished with the growth
figures of the economy and industry, those of science
and education, public health and city economy...Gen¬
eral pictures and wide strokes of the paint-brush, de¬
picting our happy reality, severely interrupted by the
war, difficult and heroic rehabilitation period, rapid
construction rates...
And already quite other
Rosto¬
vites
-
Rostovians, who «lived in this city, made friends
in this city», are hardly distinguished on this scaled
canvas... Then, it turns out that much had been for¬
gotten and lost, while the main reference source again
become Rostovian archives and urban newspapers,
from day to day notifying local citizens about the main
events. That is why it is of particular value the work,
which is done along several decades by many Rosto¬
vian enterprises and organizations, higher education
establishments and technical schools: their own his¬
tory is highlighted in the corporate books and web¬
sites, which became a great help in our work over the
present edition. In addition, traditional and electronic
periodicals, website of Municipal Administration also
helped to recollect and to restore more detailed and
comprehensive panorama of various events in the
city history over previous twenty years. Now, when
our endeavor to recollect full-scale chronicles has
been undertaken, it is possible to state that while tak¬
ing a good look into its past, contemporary Rostov
regenerates one after another its good traditions and
symbols. Thus, in the City Day, like for the first time
in
1864,
again flies the city banner, there are again
maecenas and philanthropists in Rostov, while the
produce, manufactured by Rostovian enterprises and
plants, is honored with high awards, it is regularly is¬
sued «Pre-Azov area» newspaper and every such time
bring much enjoyment a beautiful design of the amaz¬
ing flower carpet in the recreation park after M. Gorky,
being the oldest City Gardens.
Contemporary Rostov represents a major indust¬
rial center and transport junction in the south of Rus¬
sia. It is also the «port of five seas», administrative
center of Rostov region and that of Southern Federal
Area of Russia, as well as it is a major educational and
scientific center, taking the third place in our country
in terms of the number of higher education establish¬
ments. It is the city, which is open for beneficial part¬
ners and investments, looking firmly into its future.
In the very fact that the destiny of this city, which
had received as early as in the
XIX
century a powerful
impetus of development, is made up so brightly and
unusually, play significant role the very Rostovians,
being talented, undertaking and literate people, striv¬
ing to reach perfection in everything. Otherwise, no
any serious scientific centers could grow from minor
clinics and laboratories, no major plants and factories
could spring out from minor private enterprise and no
evacuated Warsaw university could survive in the city,
which nowadays has become a major scientific and
educational center in the south of Russia and it is har¬
dy that our city could be famous for its helicopters and
combine harvesters, grain and sunflower oil, building
materials and new technologies, as well as for its new¬
est elaborations and innovations, for its achievements
in the arts and sports.
When our work over this book was nearly final¬
ized, on the territory of Rostovian parish of the holy
martyr, St. George the Victor, situated in the western
housing micro district, they hammered the first piles
of the new temple, while at Budyonnovskiy Avenue it
emerged the memorial hallmark, devoted to Vladimir
Visotsky and Rostovians again reached striking sport¬
ing victories... On the eve of the City Day there are
commissioned new social objects, like physical cul¬
ture and health improving complex, having multi¬
functional game hall and water pool, being situated in
the First of May district, children polyclinic, situated
at the Cosmonauts Avenue in Voroshilovsky district,
10-storey living house for the orphan children and the
polyclinic in Temernik.
It already exists and undergoes respective discus¬
sions the Strategic plan of social and economic devel¬
opment of Rostov-on-Don for a long perspective
-
up
to
2025,
stipulating spacious development of the city
and its infrastructure, raising of compatibility of the
economy and of the life quality level of Rostovians.
It is under inauguration the cover above a new
monument, devoted to the «Founders of the fortress of
St. Demetrius of Rostov» and erected on the eve of the
city jubilee... When peeping inside thin gauze, hiding
future, it is possible to see that our city continues to live
and its history belongs thereto and to all its citizens.
