The five stories brought together in Tales of Unrest
(1898)
mark a turning-point in the writer s career.
Composed in
1896
and
1897
in Brittany and Essex,
during the troubled writing of The Rescuer (finished
only in
1919
andrenamed TheRescue) and both before
and after The Nigger of the Narcissus , the stories
are set in the Malay Archipelago, Brittany, Africa
and London. Conrad s first short-story collection
evidences a writer firmly in control of his new craft,
staking a claim to diverse cultural and fictional
territories.
The Introduction situates the writing of these
stories in Conrad s career and discusses their
sources and early reception. The explanatory notes
identify literary and historical refe/ences and real-
life places and indicate influences. Two maps and
eight illustrations enrich the explanatory matter.

Based upon

comparison of the extant
preprint documents, the serial versions and the
authoritative book editions published during the
writer s lifetime, the resultingtexts differ in important
ways from all previous editions. Conrad s surviving
manuscripts and typescripts are drawn upon as the
primary authorities in the task of identifying errors,
corruptions and interventions by others, as well as
errors he himself made in drafting.
This edition of Tales of Unrest, established
through modern textual scholarship, presents
Conrad s stories and his preface to the collection in
forms more authoritative than any so far printed.
