POVIJESNI RAZVOJ ŠKOLSTVA U GORAMA (1772.
-
2O1O.)
Summary
Thanks to church and military authorities, the school in
Gora
began with its
ivka tominović
activities relatively early in comparison to the other Border places. The first
records of its existence date back to
1772,
when church authorities opened
the school, which was attended by
25
pupils. The first teacher was
Tomo
Sigur,
who also assumed the role of the organist in the Assumption of the
Blessed Virgin Mary parish church. For his activities as a teacher and orga¬
nist, from the church fund he received monetary compensation, use of the
house and land. Classes were probably held in the parish house. For vari¬
ous reasons, the activities of the early schools were often interrupted. This
was probably also the fate of the school in
Gora
because no information is
available until
1824,
when the name of its first teacher was mentioned. His
name was
Josip Mlađenović,
who worked in
Gora
until
1839.
Financed by the state, the school and apartment for the teacher were built
in
1829,
with classes beginning on October
1
of the same year. From the very
beginning up to the present time, numerous, wonderful teachers are fondly
remembered, especially
Lovro Matagić
(1883 - 1893),
Dragutin
pl.
Miškić
(1893 -1919),
Franjo Jelaković
(1926 -1936),
Vjekoslav Šandor
(1907 -1925)
and many others.
The authorities gradually opened schools in other villages of the

regi¬
on
-
in
1843
m
Dumače,
in
i860
in Glinska
Poljana
and in
1897
in Marinbrod.
In the middle of the 20th century, the doors of schools in
Gorske Mokrice
in
1939,
in
Strašnik
in
1946,
in Graberje in
1947
and finally in Nebojan in
1956
were opened, when the network of elementary schools in the
Gora area
was
completed.
With the efforts of the parish priest
Antun
Leopold Fetzer, in
Gora,
on May
ι,
1875,
the former coeducational school was separated and the girl s cla¬
ssroom was established. For the needs of the school, the military authorities
provided the building, which had previously housed military offices, while
the funds for its renovation were collected thanks to the efforts of the muni¬
cipal head,
Josip Krnic.
Due to the poor financial state of
Gora
Municipality,
the independent girl s school did not last long, and was terminated in
1882.
A library and reading room was opened early on in
Gora, in
1887,
in com¬
parison to the many other larger villages of the central part of Croatia. It
was open all the way until World War II, when the school building burned
down. A dilettante group was founded as part of the library, holding perfor¬
mances in establishments throughout the
Gora area.
Gora
was not a typical village of
Banovina.
It was a municipal and church
center. It had a post office, several stores, an inn and several craft workshops.
Held there were widely popular church feasts and seasonal fairs. The wine-

growing hills, Steklinjak springs, mills by the
Sanja
and other interesting
sights began to draw the attention of some tourists. In
1910,
the village had
928
inhabitants. Since then, their number has dropped and in
1991, 454
pe¬
ople lived in
Gora,
while in
2001,
only
287.
This was the outcome not only
of wars, but the systematic and planned neglect of the development of this
area in Tito s Yugoslavia.
During World War II, Partisans burned down the school buildings in
Gora
and in Marinbrod. Due to the dangers of war, the other schools too gradu¬
ally stopped their activities. With the establishment of the new authorities
in autumn
1945,
they all began their activities once again. The schools in
Gora,
Marinbrod and the newly established school in
Strašnik
did not have
their own buildings therefore they operated from private houses. The scho¬
ol building in
Gora
was built only in
1962.
The conditions for the transfer of all pupils from grade
5
to
8
to
Gora
was ac¬
hieved with the construction of the school building in
Gora in
1962,
but the
problem of space appeared with their arrival. In
1978,
four new classrooms
were built, so the school could satisfy modern school standards.
Throughout history, our schools have given several prominent cultural and
public figures in the 19th and 20th century. Deriving from its classrooms
were
Stjepan
Buki,
a prominent civil engineer,
Luka Krnic
(Gejza),
de Gora,
a professor and writer, Ivan
Matagić,
a lieutenant colonel,
Stjepan
Tonko-
vić,
a peasant and politician, twice a people s representative and numerous
others.
Since
1910,
when
6435
inhabitants lived in the area of the
Gora
Municipa¬
lity, the area has been in a constant decline demographically. In
1948, 5930
inhabitants lived here, in
1991, 3077,
while in
2001,
only
2236
inhabitants.
The fall in pupils was even more drastic. In the school year of
1964/65,
in
the Main School of
Gora
and its
6
branch schools, school was attended by
543
pupils. Since then, the number has constantly dropped, falling to merely
245
pupils in the school year of
1988/89.
The Greater Serbian aggression on Croatia and the occupation of most of
the
Gora area
from
1991
to
1995
has devastated the area both materially and
demographically. From the occupied villages, the inhabitants were persecu¬
ted, and their homes set ablaze or destroyed. Only the building of Nebojan
Regional School remained intact because the village was not occupied. The
operations of the school in
Gora
and all regional schools came to a halt.
After the end of the Croatian War of Independence, the school renewed
operations in Nebojan Regional School, with regular classes beginning on
September
18, 1995
only for the lower grades. The pupils of higher gra¬
des are transferred to
Petrinja.
The inhabitants are slowly returning to their
renewed homes. The school in
Gora
has also been renewed and regular
classes began in the school year of
2001/2002,
however, now only for the
123
pupils.

POVIJESNI RAZVOJ ŠKOLSTVA U GORAMA
(1/72. -
2O1O.)
nung errichtet, so
dass
der Unterricht am 1. Oktober 1829. begann. Seitdem
len: 1939 in
Gorske Mokrice,
1946 in
Sanja
und andere Sehenswürdigkeiten lockten schon
damals die ersten
Turisten
an.
hatten jedoch keine eigenen
Gebäude, so
