Soul of a Lion
PRACTICALLY EVERY picture of me as a child,
writes Barbara Bennett, shows me holding an
animal of some kind. An English professor and
wildlife lover, she spent a recent dream sabbatical
at Harnas Wildlife Foundation in Namibia, working
with big cats and other creatures. Based on her
incredible experiences, Bennett has authored this
beautiful book-part adventure, part biography of
the foundation s amazing proprietor, and part call
to action on behalf of embattled wildlife.
At the Harnas sanctuary, founder
Marieta
van
der
Merwe and her family care for some 400
rescued, injured, and orphaned animals: chee¬
tahs, leopards, lions, primates, meerkats, and
wild dogs, as well as domestic dogs and cats.
The animals come from farmers protecting their
stock, from road accidents, and from misguided
owners who try to domesticate wild pets. Harnas
runs programs to heal, release, and care for them
all. A typical day at Harnas might involve workers
sitting under a tree in the heat of the day, super¬
vising a playdate for scampering baby baboons.
Or bottle-feeding a six-month-old giraffe, whose
legs alone match the height of an adult human.
Or strolling with half-grown lions, who might play¬
fully pounce at any moment. We all hoped one
of these injuries would scar, recalls Bennett. It
would be the cocktail party story that tops all oth¬
ers. But her most magical experience—one that
will bring awe and envy to every cat lover—was
sleeping alongside beautiful
Cleo
and Pride, lulled
by their purrs and kept warm by 300 pounds of
magnificent cheetah.
The story of Harnas is about more than the ani¬
mals. We become captivated by the story of brave
Marieta,
who has accomplished much despite
tremendous hardship including the tragic deaths
of her beloved husband and son. We learn of the
devotion to Harnas of movie star Angelina
Jolie
and countless other volunteers, and meet the
Bushmen who work at the sanctuary. People, wild¬
life, culture, and environment all play a part in this
page-turning adventure, at once funny, danger-
filled, and memorably heartwarming.
BARBARA BENNETT is a professor of
English at North Carolina State University
and a frequent volunteer at Harnas Wildlife
Foundation. She has written numerous articles
for local magazines and for scholarly publica¬
