in the Province of Gdansk between
1945-1970
Summary
The aim of this thesis is to present the relations between the state and the Roman
Catholic Church in the province of Gdansk between
1945-1970,
which are de¬
scribed through their problems. The first chapter will focus on the policy of the state
towards clergy. The chapter is divided into subchapters which describe the particular
aspects of this issue. First of all, different kinds of repressions towards priests are
presented. These are mainly surveillance, arrests, disintegration of clergy, the state
interference in the internal structures of the Church, restrictions on church celebra¬
tions and public meetings. Special stress is put on the removal of so called provisional
state in the administration of the Church. Next subchapters will examine a group
of priests called priests patriots , who officially approved of the actions taken by
the state and who were ready to cooperate with communists. Their activity against
the Church is described by presenting Priests Committee with the Association of
Fighters For Freedom and Democracy, the Committee of Clergy and Lay Catholic
Activists, the Association of Priests
Caritas
and partially PAX. The object of the
interest of party authorities was also seminary and clergy orders. The restrictions on
their military base, closing down of lower seminaries, interfering in internal issues of
schools where future priests were taught and hindering the activity of priests are the
topics of the next subchapters.
The second chapter is an attempt to analyse the policy of the communist authori¬
ties aiming to restrict the influence of the Church on the public life. The subchap¬
ters present the key issues. These are removing Religious Instruction from schools,
registry of religious centres, hindering religious practice, closing down of different
religious associations, mainly
Caritas ,
nationalization of graveyards and censorship.
The activity of activists propagating the materialistic outlook is described at the end
of this chapter.

Summary
The third chapter will examine a few events which intensified the conflict between
the Roman Catholic Church and the communist state. Traditional church celebra¬
tions such as Corpus
Christi,
church fairs, processions or pilgrimages are described
in this chapter. Special attention is paid to Polish Bishops Address to their German
Brothers , which became a subject of the strong attack of the state.

other issue pre¬
sented here is a nine-year-fight over religious and national identity of society during
the Great
Novena
which ended with
Te Deum
of the Church in Gdansk.
The last chapter focuses on the aspirations of the communist state to decrease the
assets of the church. They concerned the annexed territory of the Church, demoli¬
tion of monumental churches, hindrance to building and renovating sacred build¬
ings, the issue of stock accounts, taxes and rents.
The ideas presented in this thesis, based mainly on archive resources, leave no
doubt that the policy of the communist state towards the Roman Catholic Church
in Gdansk, the same as in the whole country, did not bring the aimed results. More¬
over, thanks to authoritative church policy of the primate Stefan
Wyszyński,
consis¬
tently executed by church hierarchy in the province of
Gdańsk
and huge support of
this society for this service, the church could not only function in the totalitarian
system but also develop, of which example were new churches.
To sum up, it needs to be pointed out that many issues that were raised, despite
the gathered resource material, could not be treated more detailed. Because of this,
they can become the subject of the separate analyses (e.g. removing Religious In¬
struction from schools). The other problem to be left is the matter of surveillance
of clergy and believers by the state. In this case, detailed treatment of this topic will
be possible only after receiving personal access to different materials, made both by
organ of security, and by the Church.
The author hopes that this publication will cause fuller and more objective un¬
derstanding of difficult relations state-church in the province of
Gdańsk
between
1945-1970,
and also will inspire to further researches.
