Summary
The tombs of Poles in Jerusalem constitute an important part of the Polish
history in Palestine. During the Second World War and a few years after it, this
part of the world was one of the most significant centres of the Polish exile.
Among those who lived there, there were the soldiers of General Anders Army.
Polish refugees came to Palestine in two stages: first, they took the route through
the Balkans; next, they came from the Soviet Union via Iran. The first to come
were the refugees from Poland which was then occupied by the Soviet Union
and Nazi Germany. The second who came were the exiles and the prisoners of
the Soviet labour camps, who managed to flee from the Soviet Union with the
Anders Army in
1942.
What reminds of the refugees is the Polish quarter in the Catholic cemetery in
Jerusalem. The said cemetery is located on the southern slope of Mount Zion,
close to the Old City of Jerusalem. The Polish part of the cemetery comprises

tombs (Czechs are buried in the three of them) and covers almost one sixth of the
necropolis. The largest number of tombs dates back to
1941-1948,
and the war
refugees- soldiers and their families- are buried there. There are the tombs of
such people as the last representative of the independent Polish Republic in Jeru¬
salem, consul
Aleksy Wdziękoński;
the co-founder of the Polish Legions,
Karol
Krzewski ( Kapral Szczapa );
and the first rector of the Polish Catholic Mission
in the Holy Land, priest Stefan
Pietruszka-Jabłonowski.
Those who are buried
next to them include the officers of both the Polish Independent Carpathian Bri¬
gade and the Anders Army, diplomats, public servants, veterans of the wars for
independence. The children, ten of whom were not older than a year, are buried
in twelve tombs. In
1974, Oskar Schindler was
buried in the vicinity of the
Polish quarter. This German industrialist saved almost
1200
Jews from being de¬
ported to concentration camps by employing them in the enamelware factory lo¬
cated in Krakow, which was then occupied by the Nazis.
Polish tombs deteriorated for several dozen years. A lot of crosses were bro¬
ken down, the tombstones cracked and it was even harder to read the inscriptions
rubbed off by rain and wind. The Polish clergymen as well as the emigrants took
care of the tombs as much as they could. Thanks to the Consular Department of
the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Tel Aviv and the Council for the Pro¬
tection of Monuments of Fighting and Martyrdom in Warsaw, the Polish quarter
in the cemetery was completely restored in

memory of the buried was erected. President
Lech Kaczyński,
who was official¬
ly visiting Israel, unveiled the monument on

September
2006.
Each year on
All Souls Day, the liturgical worship is performed in the cemetery and the repre¬
sentatives of Polish Church and State institutions in Israel take part in them. The
tombs are decorated with flowers and people light candles to commemorate
those who departed.
