In Phonological Theory: History and Development, the author gives
a brief historical development of phonological theory as has been
conceived by different scholars since the times of such eminent schol¬
ars as
Baudouin de Courtenay
and Ferdinand
de Saussure
up to the
21st Century.
The book is divided into six major sections, namely Structuralism,
The Emergence of Generative Phonology, Criticisms on the Standard
Model of Generative Phonology, Extended Models of Generative
Phonology, Extended Extended Models and The Emergence of Opti-
raality Theory.
The approach followed in this book takes the reader step by step,
exposing him or her to what the theoretical trend in phonological
theory has been over the years. This is a book that any serious student
of linguistics must read.
