Instead of the Preface
The situation of Others, as beings with an ascribed and interior-
ized culture is complex, contradictory, and doubly paradoxical.
Namely, there is a paradox in the cultural phenomenon itself.
Culture, by definition, signifies nurturing and cultivating, however,
within a social context based on hierarchy and repression, it really
and symbolically expresses that very repression. During the course of
history, social structures and hierarchy were, along with other ways,
expressed through cultural patterns that confirmed the difference
between the First and the Others (the pattern of the right to the first
marital night as a privilege of noblemen, different folklore, weapons,
living
courters,
transportation, food.). When considering the Other,
especially the female gender, the repression is twofold: cultural-civi-
lizational and specific gender/sexual. The goal of this book is to por¬
tray the cultural patterns ascribed to different categories of Others,
especially the female gender, focused on the preservation and those
meant for suppression, annihilation. The following aspect relates to
the internalization of the identity of a person belonging to the First
or the Other
—
a perception of oneself in that manner. The theoreti¬
cal exploration was focused on the phenomenon of otherness, the is¬
sue of subjects and non-subjects, etc.
The idea for this book arose during the preparations for the inter¬
national symposium "Man and Culture" organized by the Croatian
Association of Philosophy in
2007
on the island of
Cres.
Specifically,
a group of scientists working on the project "The Identity of Oth¬
ers" linked the subject of their project with the main theme of the
symposium. The organizational board of the symposium was headed
by professor Nikola Skledar (President) and
Jasenka Kodrnja
(Vice-
President). Aside from them, professor Lino
Veljak, Mladen Labus,

Mirjana Adamović and
Ana Maskalan also
participated in the sym¬
posium. These are the authors who became the core that gathered
and engaged other authors who contributed to this book. It is a mul-
tidisciplinary work, with papers written by sociologists, philosophers,
linguists and gender studies' theorists. The international/regional sig¬
nificance of this book should also be mentioned, because it gathered
in one place authors from Zagreb, Belgrade,
Novi Sad,
Sarajevo and
Ljubljana. The book intends to present and oppose the modern and
postmodern paradigms by portraying their scopes and limitations.
