Summary
SUMMARY
In course of the archaeological investiga¬
tions of barrows in the Western environs of the
Belsk site of the ancient settlement, mainly on
the territory of the Belsk village council in the
Poltava region, in
1999-2006,
by team of the
Centre of Preserving and Study of the Sites of
Archaeology of the Department of Culture of
the Poltava State Regional Administration,
there were examined
18
barrows and
4
separate
graves of the Scythian time. Under different ca¬
sual circumstances there have been discovered,
beside that, remains yet of
3
burial complexes.
This quite a valuable massif of the archaeologi¬
cal resources is let into scientific circulation in
the work, offered to reader.
Examining the necropolis of the Belsk
site environs, majority of explorers considered
them to be a burial ground of the high class
people of the immense archaeological com¬
plex of forest-steppe left bank political and
economical centre of the Scythian epoch. For
example, the Pereschepina barrow necropolis
some scholars regard as a cemetery of the mili¬
tary aristocracy
-
équités
-
i.e. the elite group
of the Belsk site.
The foundation time of this necropo¬
lis by the brook of Belsk is witnessed with big
burial mounds, situated separately, erected to
cover the graves of rich
équités
in
VII
с.
B.C.
in tract Peremyrky
(#1/1999)
as well as in the
Peprschepyna "field of barrows"
(#1/1993).
Obviously, in its early stage, this cemetery
was represented with burial mounds of military
elite, which ranged into prime lines over the
valley of the brook. If the earliest and nearest to¬
wards the Western fortification is the necropolis
in the tract Peremyrky
(VII
-
early VI
с
B.C.),
then the Pereschepyna barrow necropolis II, in
the mouth of the brook and on the right side of
Sukhaya Hrun, has maintained the tradition of
burying here the members of aristocratic fami¬
lies
(équités)
in VI
-
early V
с
B.C.
Perhaps, this tradition suffered some
changes in the early V
с
B.C., since the rise of a
settlement in the tract Lisovy
Kut
in the north¬
western part of the Big fortification of the Belsk
site. In the Pereschepyna necropolis I, above the
more ancient barrows, there were to be erected
burial mounds over graves of the wealthiest pos¬
sessors of estates from the neighbouring settle¬
ment. These estates had obviously been in pos¬
session of warriors, which guarded this part of
fortifications and the north-western entrance
into the settlement
(#1/2001; #3/2002).
In the
neighbourhood of them commence to appear
burial mounds of the family members and their
close relatives. The Pereschepyna barrow ne¬
cropolis I is formed as a large complex of micro-
groups, including a few big barrows around of
which are situated some smaller burial mounds,
covering graves of people who had been relatives
or, probably, dependants of the heads of the
families. Thus, since the Vc. B.C., the necropo¬
lis Pereschepyno I comes to be a burial ground
for the concrete settlement in tract Lisovy
Kut.
Since early IV
с
B.C. among the barrows
commence to appear burials of common peo¬
ple, i.e. little graves in pits with small hillocks
above, it. Later, at the same place, in the inter-
barrows space, appear graves of common people
in simple ground pits (see:
1, 2 /2002).
Some
scholars suppose that the ground type graves
were dominant in early Iron Age for the major¬
ity of people not only in the basin of Vorskla, but
entirely through the Forest-steppe area.
Only a few examined complexes in tract
Pereschepyno were erected in
VII
с.
B.C.
(4%).
Most of the graves appear here in V
с
B.C., up
to the middle of the century or its second half
(68%).
The most appreciated and significant
(after its inventory) burial complexes on the
territory of the Big fortification of the Belsk
site are referred namely to the epoch of bloom.
Approximately
23%
of all the burials appear in

IV
с.
B.C. The size of the burial com¬
plexes and their inventory become much more
humble. Obviously, it proves the decline of the
economical life on the territory of the fortress in
the watershed, dividing Vorskla and Psel.
Most of the examined barrows
(88%)
are
situated in group of mounds in the central and
north-western part of the Pereschepyna ne¬
cropolis I. Explored in them types of the grave
constructions, the way of placing the bodies of
buried ones show that there are two types of the
burial chambers: simple pits with floor in the
bottom and small hillock above it, with a step
or without it at entrance
(11),
and also vaults,
reinforced with wood and placed at the same
pits with refilling the space betwixt the wall and
the wood of the vault with the dug soil
(9).
These
two types of the burial complexes may be the
marks of the social statues of the buried people.
For a few biggest barrows it has been cal¬
culated their
initiai
high
- 2,3-3,0
m, in
6
cases
there were also ditches around each barrow, ini¬
tial diameters of which were
12-22
m. It is clear
that the mounds of such barrows mainly were
erected using the soil, taken out of the pit, but in
some cases, it was used massif of neighbouring,
older mounds.
The orientation of the burial complexes of
Pereschepyna and neighbouring necropolises
is the same: north-eastern and south-western.
Such orientation had continued through all the
time of the necropolises had been built, remain¬
ing unchanged for the ground burials IV cen¬
tury B.C. Though there are some exceptions in
the massif of the examined complexes: burials
orientated at latitude
(#1/2006).
Size of burial pits swings between
2,00x2,55
and
3,80x5,40
m, as well as the squares of vaults
are between
2,40
and
10,2
m.
22%
of the examined burials are the burials
of male persons, in
23%
the male is accompa-
n
kil
by female, in two cases it is a male servant,
in
18%
in the male burial are placed a few fe¬
males and children. There are also female buri¬
als, it is
14%
of the same entire number of the
burials in which the buried is accompanied by
dependant people, in a small number are also
the children's burials, it is approximately
8%.
It
is worth of attention the
ріасетелі
to a child's
burial a young female, probably nursemaid
(2
(7V2001).
In the most number of cases, the placement
of a buried one is stretched on the back; the
nursemaid, from the mentioned
2
(7)/2001, is
crooked on the side. In
27%
of examined cases
buried was placed with head towards the north
or the north-west, in
32%
of cases
-
towards
the south-west, in three burials the orientation
approximates to the eastern. The age group
distribution of people, buried in Pereschepyna
necropolis I is such: children's
- 23%,
teenagers'
- 9%,
who were placed into the graves, presum¬
ably, as dependants, males in age
18-20
to
40-45
years
- 13%,
females in age from
16-25
to
35-40
years
- 9%.
There are also burials of relatively
old people, in particular, a male
50-55
years of
age
(#1/2002).
The state of the dental system of the buried
ones shows us quite a high level of the health
potential, and absence of pathological changes
in bone tissues. It is detected a case of sarcoma
which had a man of ripe age, and trauma with
an arrow, which had a male-warrior
(21/2000).
Most graves are basic and single under the
mounds of the barrows. In one case there is de¬
tected a fact of presence of two single warriors'
graves into the barrows
(#3/2002),
with refilling
the mound and insertion one more grave.
Perhaps, the grave
5/2000
could be inserted
into a barrow, the mound of which had been
once massive, but destroyed in time.
82%
of graves were robbed in the late
Middle ages;
40%
of them
-
twice, and
26% -
were visited by robbers three times or more in
the Modern times. There are no evidences of
grave robbery in the Scythian time. Robbers left
untouched only two graves of all the examined
complexes.
Only
5
dug barrows contained items of
weapon and horse bridle, that made possible to
refer them to the number of graves of the mili¬
tary aristocracy, i.e.
équités.
In the earliest bar¬
row
#1/1999
in tract Peremyrky
(VII
с.
B.C.),
besides the remains of a sword, spear, plates of
an amour and an arrowhead, has been found a
fragment of an iron pommel, and in two graves
of barrows
#1/2001
and
#2/2001
of the middle
V
с
B.C. have been found fragments of swords,
spears, and a plate belt. One-two bridles in each
complex, and even four sets of it in the barrow
#1/2001
indicate them to be the burial com¬
plexes of
équités.
Summary
Graves of foot warriors in barrow
#3/2002
(graves
21/2000, 1/2002)
contained well pre¬
served sets of weapons: remains of a bow and
two quiver sets, having
51
and
74
arrowheads,
sword, dagger, a spearhead, remains of a leather
and felt helmet. There was no harness at all.
Thus, the graves of the militaries make up
lesser than a quarter of the entire number of ex¬
amined graves. The rest of the burial complexes
belong to wealthy people from the neighbouring
settlement in the tract Lisovy
Kut.
Ceramics,
made by the local potters, are the typical element
of associated inventory in these graves. These
are moulded pots with rough surface, polished
chalices, large earthenware pots, lamps, made
in the settlement of the tract Lisovy
Kut,
and
a jug, in one case. The number of such pottery
in graves of militaries in two or, in some cases,
even three times more than in ordinary com¬
plexes. The mould ceramics are present in more
than
77%
of the examined graves.
Imported ancient Greek pottery, that was
generally present in the remnants of funeral
feast (trizna), was found in ten complexes
(45%).
These are fragments and a whole amphora in
graves of people, belonging to military elite V
с
B.C. In some of them were found some ex¬
emplars of black and brown varnished ceramics,
polychrome glass and alabastrine aribals and
alabasters.
In two graves were found fragments of wood
vessels, dishes, in one the wood vessel with met¬
al bindings.
An essential element of the Scythian time
burial rite of the Belsk site western environs was
placing into graves riveted knives with bone laid
on handles, ceramic distaffs or spins itself, in
some cases whetstones, sandstone plates (used as
a dressing table), fragments of iron axe fastener. In
the most number of complexes have been found
remnants of leather and textile fabric items, and
in two of them the silk ones. In
23%
of females'
graves have been found fragments of bronze mir¬
rors, among which was a rare exemplar of a well
intact, entire mirror of the Peloponnesian type
(barrow
# 2/2002).
From the usual bijouterie
have been found iron pins
(3),
glass, faience, ob¬
sidian, amber, cornelian beads
(45%
of graves).
In inventory of the richest graves are fragments of
gold necklaces, thread of beads and pendants of
gold and silver. Most of them are the high quality
'products of antique toreuts, who worked in po-
leis, situated in the northern area, adjacent to the
Black Sea. In one of the complexes found frag¬
ments of a box of expensive wood, leather case of
mirror, rouge, brimstone, etc.
Thus, the examinations of the barrows of
the west environs of the Belsk site and the site
itself have given quite valuable and significant
materials for study of the burial rite and the
material culture of inhabitants of this unique
monument, have specifically influenced the
.
understanding of peculiarities of forming and
chronology of Pereschepyna barrow necropolis
I, proved the existence of ground graves near the
complex.
In addition to that, carrying out the wide-
ranging earth-moving works with opening
step-by-step large squares in a few hectares, as
it happens towards the West from the Belsk site,
in zone of geological exploring and productive
works on the Belsk gas condensate deposit of
the Solokhiv gas field GFO (Gas Field Office)
"Poltavagasvydobuvannia", will give an oppor¬
tunity to receive answers to the questions raised
in the book and to examine the remnants of
destroyed barrows in the Northern part of the
Pereschepyna necropolis.
