DEMOGRAPHIC REPRODUCTION IN THE EUROPEAN
COUNTRIES AFTER WORLD WAR II
Summary
The populations of the European countries have experienced different paths of
demographic reproduction after World War II. Eastern Europe, as a region in Europe
that already had some specific features before the war, displayed some different models
of demographic reproduction, typical for its different political and economic
developments. Many authors have raised various problems concerning this period,
denominated as socialist or communist , but few attempts have been made to analyze
the impact of this system on demographic development. It is not obvious that any
historical trends (namely in demographic development) should be attributed only to
the political system, provided that demography is a complex field where many factors
interplay. We are not arguing that all the specificity of Eastern Europe is due to the
political differences between East and West, there are most certainly other factors as
well, such as: the traditions, the religious factors, historical and geographic factors,
etc. Our aim in this book was to construct and present a comprehensible and objective
panoramic view of the main demographic indicators and trends in all countries in
Europe, and on this basis
-
to provide hypothesis and to analyze the specific features
of the regions in Europe, displaying specific demographic trends.
The refined demographic analysis has led us to the conclusion that Eastern
Europe has a lot of specific features, that this region is different in many of the main
demographic indicators, compared to the rest of Europe. Moreover, three main
clusters exist in the contemporary demography of Europe: Western Europe, Eastern
Europe, and the Former republics of USSR (now Community of Independent States).
These clusters can be observed with respect to the life expectancy at birth, and at
various other ages (these are aggregated indicators of mortality), but also with respect
to the difference in life expectancy between men and women, the levels and trends of
fertility, the mean age of motherhood, the levels and trends of demographic ageing,
etc. A specific situation is observed in Eastern Europe also with respect of family
behavior (nuptiality, divorce, reproductive behavior, extramarital family forms, etc),
but these aspect of demographic reproduction are only briefly mentioned in the book,
while most of the data and analyses are focused on the main demographic processes:
fertility, mortality, population ageing.
During the years after World War II demographic trend has been different, and
in the first period
-
before
1960 -
Eastern Europe was getting closer to Western Europe,
with respect to some important demographic indicators, such as infant mortality, life
expectancy at birth, etc. In the later periods though a clear difference emerged between
East and West, and deepened in the later periods, spreading over most of the
demographic features: life expectancy ceased to increase in the East; for some age

groups, and especially for the males, it started to increase. At the same time the trends
un
Western Europe were in the direction of a continuous amelioration
-
increase of
life expectancy for all age-groups, and for both sexes. The difference in life expectancy
between the sexes thus became much greater in Eastern Europe, males having a clearly
lower life expectancy in Eastern Europe.
The trends of fertility are more irregular in Eastern Europe than in Western
Europe. This can be attributed to the introducing in most East European countries of
various pronatalist measures in the late 1960-ies and early 1970-ies. After
1990
a
sharp decline of fertility is registered in Eastern Europe, linked to the economic crisis,
accompanying the transition to democracy and market economy. One of the demo¬
graphic mechanisms, behind this is the process of delaying childbearing (which has
been younger in Eastern Europe before the transition period, compared to Western
Europe). In Western Europe a long trend of delaying fertility towards older ages oc¬
curred since the
1
960-ies, bringing the mean age at motherhood to much higher ages
much earlier than in Eastern Europe.
Today Eastern Europe is displaying many similarities with Western Europe
-
concerning the age of motherhood, the extra-marital fertility, the non-marital forms
of family behavior, etc. Nevertheless in the present period total fertility rates are
lower in Eastern Europe, after a long period of maintaining this indicator higher in
than in the West (until the beginning of the transition).
All these finding are presented in the book in a professional way, using compre¬
hensive means of visualization, in order to bring complex demographic analysis closer
to a large scope of Bulgarian readers. The trends of fertility, mortality and demo¬
graphic ageing in our country, in the context of the European countries, have been
for a long time subject of speculations, and false interpretations, due to the complex¬
ity of the demographic indicators that characterize these processes, and to some mis¬
interpretations, inspired by ideological reasons. In the book we have made an effort
for objectivity, and a scientific presentation of facts, using a number of demographic
indicators, most of them, published recently by the Council of Europe.
We believe that this refraining from any political or whatever ideological prefer¬
ences of the authors, will enable the readers to find their ways to understanding the
complexity of the demographic situation in contemporary Europe.
