Socioemotional development is a complex phenom¬
enon that cannot be fully understood without taking
culture into account. Yet much of the research in this
area has been limited to Western, particularly North
American, contexts. Filling a significant gap in the
literature, this book examines the impact of culture
on the social behaviors, emotions, and relationships of
children around the world. Eminent scholars discuss
cutting-edge ideas and findings and highlight the
implications for culturally informed intervention and
prevention.
Part I presents major theoretical perspectives, tracing
how culture interacts with other key influences on
socioemotional development, including parent-child
and peer relationships. Also addressed are the de¬
velopmental effects of public policies, such as those
pertaining to immigration. Part II delves into parental
belief systems and socialization practices. Compelling
topics include the models of good parenting to which
parents aspire in different cultures, the characteristics
they strive to inculcate in their children, and how these
shape developmental outcomes. Part III focuses on
the role of culture in a range of basic socioemotional
processes: emotion and emotion regulation, autonomy,
self-identity, and close relationships. Finally, Part IV
explores cultural differences in what is seen as adaptive
or maladaptive development, with chapters on moral¬
ity and social exclusion, conflict management, and
aggression. The concluding chapter analyzes children s
psychosocial
functioning in cultures experiencing
rapid social change.

About the Editors
Xinyin Chen, PhD, is Professor of Psychology in
the Applied Psychology-Human Development
Division, Graduate School of Education, at the
University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He is
a Fellow of the American Psychological Associa¬
tion and the Association for Psychological Science
and a member of the Executive Committee of the
International Society for the Study of Behavioral
Development. Dr. Chen has received a William T.
Grant Scholars Award, a Shanghai Eastern Scholars
Award, and several other academic awards. His pri¬
mary research interest is children s and adolescents
socioemotional functioning (e.g., shyness—inhibition,
social competence, and affect) and social relation¬
ships from a cultural-contextual perspective.
Kenneth H. Rubin, PhD, is Professor of Human
Development and Director of the Center for Chil¬
dren, Relationships, and Culture at the University
of Maryland in College Park. He is a Fellow of the
Canadian Psychological Association, the American
Psychological Association, and the Association for
Psychological Science. Dr. Rubin is a recipient
of the award for Distinguished Contributions to
the International Advancement of Research and
Theory in Behavioral Development from the
International Society for the Study of Behavioral
Development and of the Developmental Psychol¬
ogy Mentor Award from the American Psycho¬
logical Association. He is currently a member of the
Governing Council of the Society for Research in
Child Development. Dr. Rubins research and pub¬
lications address such topics as social competence,
social cognition, play, aggression, social anxiety and
withdrawal, and children s peer and family relation¬
ships.
