I first met
Žarko Vuković
in March
1985.
The occasion was the promotion in
Belgrade of Monica Krippner's book The quality of mercy: women at war
Serbia
1915-18.
The event took place in the main hall of what was then
one of the Yugoslav capital's leading language schools, the Centre for Foreign
Languages, set in the leafy district of
Topčider.
I had been invited, as a native
speaker of English who had recently become a resident of Belgrade, to join
other expatriates in reading selected excerpts from diaries of various person¬
alities featured in Monica's book.
The event was organised and chaired by a good-looking man in his
middle years, whose dapper appearance was matched by the eloquent and
well-crafted oratory in which he presented a subject with which he was clearly
already very familiar. This was my first acquaintance with the person who has
been mainly responsible for awakening the public to awareness of the great
humanitarian contribution made by British and Commonwealth doctors and
nurses in Serbia during the First World War, and for developing that aware¬
ness by animating many people and organising many actions. For me and my
wife
Ružica,
it was also the beginning of a warm friendship with
Žarko
and
his family.
All of us present that March evening were, I now realise, witnessing a
key event in the reawakening of a heroic story which had been, for too long,
known only to too few. Monica
Krippner was
an Australian journalist who had
settled in Vienna and made her name as a travel writer (including a guide
book on Yugoslavia). In
1980,
she had written the first popular history of the
activities of those known in Serbia as "the Scottish women". In her Prologue,
she writes:
".
For some unaccountable reason the spectacular service during
World War I of women doctors and surgeons, who did so much to alleviate
the suffering in front-line hospitals in various theatres of war, remains lit¬
tle known and barely acknowledged
. "
Of those who served in Serbia, she
observes: "Probably no group of women have given so much of themselves
under such tremendous odds, and emerged so magnificently
-
and so unsung
in their own country
. ".
Žarko Vuković
was instrumental in getting Women at
war translated into Serbian and published in Belgrade in
1986.
As one of the many of my countrymen who (until that March evening)
had been entirely ignorant of this particular aspect of the history of the Great
War, and the enduring relations which had been established forever between
Serbia, Britain (especially Scotland), Canada and Australia, I can now declare
with certainty that the past

years or so which I have spent living and work¬
ing largely in Belgrade have been greatly enriched by my encounter with
Žarko,
Monica and the "Scottish women". For the achievements and, in some cases,
sacrifice of these "unsung" heroines, the main feeling was and still is one of
intense admiration. This was certainly the feeling which
Žarko
voiced on all
occasions we met
-
he never tired of extolling the extraordinary devotion
which those doctors and nurses showed in caring for the soldiery and people
of Serbia in one of her darkest hours.
Unlike me,
Žarko
had a very broad and very deep fund of knowledge on
the subject, as this present volume shows. He was a veritable encyclopedia of
the history of these medical personnel and the operations of their units and
field hospitals. Furthermore, he was a man with a mission
-
to educate his
fellow-countrymen, and us ignorant foreigners, in this great and moving story,
and to develop a network of links with like-minded individuals, particularly in
the UK. An hour spent in his company left you in no doubt of his priorities and
the rationale behind them
-
and, listening to his always well-informed and
passionate discourse, you could never disagree. At his invitation, I assisted, in
a modest way, in many of the events which he organised
-
presentations, pub¬
lications, commemorations
-
and count myself immensely privileged to have
been involved. We owe him a great debt of thanks.
