SUMMARY
The rescue-archaeological studies in vast new building areas allow perform
continuous excavation of many different more or less significant archaeological objects
that date from different periods. This is especially true for burial sites
—
barrows and
burial grounds. The volumes of constructive activities give possibility to research areas
near burial monuments and discover very small sized complexes which were ravaged by
time and human activity.
This fully applies to the territory of Eristovsky iron ore deposit. This deposit is
situated in the area of historic Kremenchugschina, close to Voloshyne village, not
far from Komsomolsk town in Poltava region. On this territory some very extensive
researches were made. Proposed to reader work is dedicated to some results of the
researches.
In summer
2005,
Protection Archaeological Expedition of the Centre of Protection
and Research of Archaeological Sites of the Culture Department of the Poltava State
Regional Administration investigated several barrows from the group II which were
located on the area relied to planning of land use under future pit of present "Eristovsky
GZK" territory.
As a result, seven mounds from the group II near Voloshine village (lower flow of
the river Psel) were studied. Among the investigated burials:

Zrubna culture

Scythian,

nomadic of Golden Horde,

late nomadic,

pits and

hearth.
Among the investigated burial complexes, certain scientific value has female
burial

culture from the barrow

The accompanying inventory was
represented by earring and remains of a wooden vessel.
An especial attention is drawn by rare early Scythian
(VII
B.C.) burial complex

barrow

In this burial (grave) a «dangerous» buried woman
—
priestess was discovered.
The burial was accompanied by rather expressive findings, among them-two handicraft
artifacts, one of which is unique. This is a pin made of deer horn, decorated with a
figure ofa mountain goat. Pin is executed in the tradition of Asia Minor art. Described
adornment is unique for Ukraine.
Early Scythian funerary complex has exceptional scientific importance as one of
the earliest archaeologically proved facts of Scythian nomadic population presence in
the river Dnieper region in the beginning of

century B.C.

are of big interest too. The first of them is female, the second
is male. These graves are typical for free nomads of the second half- the end of the
XIII
-
the beginning of the
XIV
centuries. Discovered burials are interesting by the funeral
rite. Along with the traditional placement to the burial of grave goods (funerary food,
decorations, weapons, etc.) and the direction of the skeleton by cranium to the northeast
and northwest have place new Muslim trends. First of all new trends are characterized
by rotation of the face to the south. Quite interesting is the placement of buried in a
wooden coffin. One of the graves was overlapped by the parts of bullock cart.

child's burial without any grave goods was found. Quite
possible that discovered burial belonged to bondman (dependent person). It was erected
at a distance from most graves in the necropolis of Golden Horde, on the Stolobovatay
Mogyla remnants, near Voloshine village. It is possible that this complex might have
belonged to a child of the next historic period for example XV
- XVI
centuries.
There are some rare finds in the Golden Horde burials. It concerns about nose
decoration (Bokka) and the parts of bullock cart.
Thus, the results of the rescue-archaeological studies confirmed necessity of total
excavations once again. Only continuous investigation of large areas can reveal destroyed
archaeological objects, especially it is true for burial sites. The ruined mounds may
contain very extraordinary and unique funerary complexes. By the way, the economic
implication of the rescue-archaeological studies was the «liberation» of more than

hectares for the future career of LLC Eristovsky GZK. |
