Summary
The present study is an outcome of collaborative historical
research into the early phase of post-1989 democratic
transformation carried out by several scholars of contemporary
history. It is neither a systematic survey of Czech post-1989
politics, nor it is a contribution to politics of history or politics of
memory. It is an attempt to provide an analytical survey of our
recent past from the perspective of historians who share
a common area of interest. That common interest is the
formation of Czech political culture or more precisely the
political and cultural identities formed on the basis of a multi-
layered and complex relationship to one s own past that remains
a player in Czech politics. The period of so called democratic
transition was understood and represented not only by social
scientists, but also by the contemporary political actors, as a time
of building up of a new order or a new society, a time that aspired
to radically break its ties to its immediate past. From the
perspective of current day historian, though, this period
paradoxically appears as a time characterized by a fascination
and manipulation of the past and its immeasurable layers. It also
seems to be a time that is unbreakably tied to its state-socialist
and even earlier predecessors, by countless links of personal,
institutional and cultural histories.
The title of this study Divided by the Past thus according to the
authors captures the spirit of the Czech post-1989 political
culture. In contrast with the later period, the early
1990s
were
characterized by a peculiar understanding of the horizon of
political time, which was measured by the various political
movements, nascent political parties or discussion clubs, not in
terms of one or two election periods but in the order of
generations if not centuries. In times of establishment (or re-
establishment) of pluralistic parliamentary democracy such
a development seems to be a logical consequence of searchingfor

and at the same time the creation of usable political and cultural
traditions as an indispensable bond of the individual political
bodies as well as national political community itself. This book,
however, attempts to show that this search for traditions and
images of past was in no way arbitrary or accidental. In some
instances the usable past was determined by the long term
development of the given political community or personal
biography of a politician, in other cases it was more a matter of
pragmatic political struggle and the inevitable political
differentiation. Each of the political movements or nascent
political parties discussed in the individual chapters represents
an advanced phase of personal biographies, social networks,
friendships, mental horizons and social structures . In the early
1990s,
people often used the catch phrase old structures to refer
to someone closely associated with the andent regime. In the logic
of this study, all the political subjects in this book and their
leading politicians could legitimately be called old structures
as new structures were nowhere to be found.
The first chapter Political Games with the Unfinished
Revolution : Settling Accounts with Communism during and
after the Civic Forum deals with the dynamics of the politics of
history among the revolutionary elite focusing on the shift from
the immediate post-revolutionary spirit of national understanding
to the pronounced anti-communist campaigns and policies. The
second chapter Dissent as the Past, Liberalism as the Future:
Civic Movement and Free Democrats in Czech post-November
politics asks about the fate of the liberal and secular stream of
the dissent movement in the rather hostile political environment
of the early
1990s.
The third chapter called A Rather Traditional
Break with the Past: The Presence of the Past in the Ideology
and Political Rhetoric of the Civic Democratic Party discusses
the politics of history of the largest right-wing party and the main
successor of the revolutionary Civic Forum. Its way of relating to
the past is as much politics of memory as it is politics of amnesia. The

fourth chapter President Vaclav Havel and the Burden of
(Communist) Past. Lustrations as a Political and Moral
Problem, 1989-1992 focuses especially on the issue of so called
lustrations, i.e. screening of high rank officials for their past
involvement with the secret service, and the role that Vaclav
Havel played in this process. The fifth chapter The Pasts That
Divide: The Czechoslovak Social Democratic Party,
1989-1992
gave name to the whole book. It maps the individual streams of
post-1989 social democratic movement (the restitution group ,
the continuity group , and the new group ) and their inability
to create a shared perspective of the past. The sixth chapter Two
Modes of Christian Politics . Czechoslovak Peoples Party and
Christian Democratic party in the First Half of the
1990s
deals
with two different subjects: the Peoples Party and its dealing with
the troubling heritage as a state-socialist puppet party and the
post-dissident miniscule Christian Democratic Party and its
anti-communist agenda. The seventh chapter Conservative
Counterrevolution.: Civic Democratic Alliance and Post-
Communist Transformation looks at the radical policy of
a small right-wing post-dissident party that initiated many of
the policies of dealing with the past and tied them with
neoliberal
economic policies. The eighth chapter The
Marginal Parties: Fate of The Small in the
1990s -
Czecho¬
slovak Socialist Party, Liberal Democratic Party, Society for
Moravia and Silesia narrates the stories of three marginal
parties that failed to influence main-stream politics, and
therefore, paradoxically, provide valuable insight into the
political culture of the
1990s.
The ninth chapter Sweep Them
All into the Vltava River : Shifts in the Revolutionary
Discourse of the Union for the Republic

Republican Party of
Czechoslovakia discusses the shift of the extreme-right party
and its leader
Miroslav
Sládek
from virulent anti-communism
to populist chauvinism. The last chapter The Stigma of the
Past, Family Ties: The First Ten Years of Czech Communism
after the Changes of
1989
deals with the internal struggle of

the Communist Party to find an effective strategy towards
revaluating its own past that would convince the public about
Party s democratic credential yet simultaneously preserve the
members identity.
